I am definitely guilty of make my life harder than it needs to be sometimes, and getting on my mat is where I go to find peace, simplicity, and alignment. As much as we think we can create everything on our own, no matter what there are always times we need support, and being humble enough to allow that support in, helps us find that space of peace, simplicity and alignment more easily. We have a couple great measurement devices built into our bodies, that a very effective indicators of when its time to drop the ego and allow the support in. Your breath; is it short? You’re probably working to hard, ask for help. Your face; is your jaw sore and nose scrunched? I bet someone else might be more than willing to share some wise and meaningful advice. Your shoulders; are they getting awfully close to your ears? Bet your friend would love to massage them for you to relieve the stress. The things we practice on our mats become habits we bring off of it. How do you feel about headstand? • While certainly a very popular inversion in the yoga world, and one with lots of purported benefits, you may which to consider a few things before diving in head first (sorry 😉). • Researchers at the University of Texas studied 45 experienced yoga practitioners and measured the load on the head and neck while performing headstand. • Findings of the study revealed on average, that the load on the head and neck was between 40 - 48% of an individual’s body weight. This is pretty significant. Authors of the study state that these loads put a minimum of 50% of individuals at risk of neck injury. 😢 • The degree of load was also influenced by the technique used; with the least amount of load to the neck when straight legs lift and lower simultaneously. “Kicking up” or using an asymmetrical, single leg technique resulted in the greatest load to the neck. 😢 Load was further increased as the length of time in headstand increased. • I think what’s really important here is that although the sample size was small, the study was done with highly experienced practitioners. Less experienced practitioners would likely have even greater loads. • Like inversions but looking for alternatives? You may wish to substitute a “headless” headstand as shown here. Some days are just not good days. This lil list helped my shift my perspective: 1. You simply can’t and will not please everyone you meet. And your motivation can’t be someone’s approval - once you get it, you realize that only gave you temporary, fleeting happiness. Not true happiness 2. You need to STEP INTO change even tho it may be scary sometimes. Great things never came from comfort zones! 3. Living in the past will only slow you down from discovering all the great things you are destined for in the future. 4. Overthinking — a slippery slope that affects pretty much everyone. Doing this drives me crazy and often just makes me feel worse 5. Don’t be afraid to be different! Being specifically YOU is your power. Find the power in who you are at your core, not what family, friends, or society think of you. Who are you when no one’s watching? When it’s simply just you and your mind? 6. You cannot sacrifice your happiness for others. It’s important to be there and go the extra mile for others — but do not burn yourself out when they are taking advantage or asking for way too much. You HAVE to take care of yourself 7. You are good enough. Imposter syndrome is SO real — thinking thoughts like “I don’t belong here” and “this was a mistake” are all false narratives of doubt. If you are in a new situation and you feel uncomfortable, that’s completely normal - afterall, it’s new. But if you’re there anyway, you might as well show up and give it your all. 8. Thinking you have no purpose. This is the biggest lie. I so genuinely believe everyone is on this Earth for a reason to do something great. We all have our own passions, certain things that make us feel excited or euphoric. FOLLOW THAT PASSION. That passion is not random, it’s your CALLING. Follow it, cling to it, and never lose sight of it.
