In 1971 Spud moved from Dublin to London, where I recommended him as the house photographer for the music paper Sounds - which led to Spuds famous shots of John Lennon recording his Imagine album at home at Tittenhurst Park in Ascot. As Mental Guru to T.Rex, I brought Spud into the Marc Bolan camp. Among the many splendid photographs he took is the T.Rex Electric Warrior album cover at The Albert Hall, Nottingham May 14th 1971- taken the same evening shortly after Spuds backstage shot here of Marc & I. (this pic is backstage at one of my first gigs with him) It was my first time playing & recording with a major artist... my first time touring internationally... and I got my first endorsements... I thought 20 was old at the time... but in hindsight, it’s SO young... and despite being musically skilled, I was green AF... and Hiram had a profound influence on me...as a musician and as a person. His untimely death hit me hard...and I miss him every day... John made his first appearance on stage at an open mic night, basically on a dare. It was just a little club in Chicago, not even 20 people in there when I got up. I wasn’t the type to heckle, but I’d had a few beers and wasn’t really impressed with what I was hearing and said so under my breath. And someone at the next table said, “Well if it’s so easy, why don’t you get up and do it?” So I said, “Well, maybe I will.” I got up and sang Sam Stone and the audience just sat there. They looked at me, looked at each other, looked at me again… seemed like an eternity and, finally, they started applauding. The owner of the club came up afterwards and offered me a job singing there. I couldn’t believe it. The thing I really remember was that I was more comfortable than I’d ever felt. I just felt like that’s where I belonged. Without those small clubs, John Prine might’ve spent his 50 year career still a mailman. And even after he started playing larger venues, John worked as often as he could with independent venues and promoters. And he always loved popping up at local venues around Nashville.
