Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid taking over the feed here @everydayextinction with new work from Kenya looking at conservation in the time of Covid - Serval cat, Timau, Laikipia, Kenya - when we talk about an increase in bushmeat poaching, both for trade, and domestic use, we do so now in conjunction with Covid-19 and the complete cessation of tourism here in Kenya. What we don’t often consider, and what we should consider, is the huge increase in the pointless (my fucking blood is boiling here so please excuse me) slaughter of wildlife that is caught in poachers’ snares. They have no use 😡for cats such as the serval, caracal, and leopard, so when they are found in snares they are beaten to death with spades, and buried. This one was discovered by farm workers in thick bush bordering a field of crops. The obvious target was buck, for the pot. It’s tough here at the moment, unemployment is high, particularly in farming, and the safari tourism industry; where incidentally it’s extremely rare to see one of these magnificent cats, and tourists usually pay top dollar in the hope of doing so. This is the largest, healthiest serval cat any of us have ever seen here. Indeed, we responded to a leopard call, due to the size of the cat, and found the serval. I’ve said before, @dr_mathew_mutinda_ is the most extraordinary vet I’ve ever worked with, but despite his efforts, the cat’s injuries were so great that it did not survive. An utterly pointless death !! The association of serval cats with human beings dates back to the time of Ancient Egypt. Servals are depicted as gifts from Nubia in Egyptian art, and yet here I am watching the Dr remove it from its suspended death 😡😡is this where mankind has come to ?! The world population is living, working, vacationing, increasingly conglomerating along the coasts, and standing on the front row of the greatest, most unprecedented, plastic waste tide ever faced. Washed out on our coasts in obvious and clearly visible form, the plastic pollution spectacle blatantly unveiling on our beaches is only the prelude of the greater story that unfolded further away in the world’s oceans, yet mostly originating from where we stand: the land. For more than 50 years, global production and consumption of plastics have continued to rise. An estimated 299 million tons of plastics were produced in 2013, representing a 4 percent increase over 2012, and confirming and upward trend over the past years.(See: Worldwatch Institute – January 2015). In 2008, our global plastic consumption worldwide has been estimated at 260 million tons, and, according to a 2012 report by Global Industry Analysts, plastic consumption is to reach 297.5 million tons by the end of 2015. Plastic is versatile, lightweight, flexible, moisture resistant, strong, and relatively inexpensive. Those are the attractive qualities that lead us, around the world, to such a voracious appetite and over-consumption of plastic goods. However, durable and very slow to degrade, plastic materials that are used in the production of so many products all, ultimately, become waste with staying power. Leopards can be tricky to spot! With incredibly effective camouflage and a preference for hunting at night, leopards are usually the most difficult of safari animals to see in the wild. One of our favourite places to spot leopard has to be in the South Luangwa in the east of Zambia. This national park combines pristine dense habitat with reliable water sources to make the perfect balance for a remote wildlife hotspot. It’s also known as the Valley of the Leopard – an appropriate reference to its large concentration of elusive, spotted big cats. Although we can never guarantee a specific wildlife sighting, we’ve yet to have an experience beaten by the South Luangwa when it comes to sighting leopard. It’s habitat range travels from the Southwestern part of the US all the way to the South of Paraguay and Northern Argentina! What’s unique about the jaguar is not it’s diet, but in fact how this predator kills. Along with the common deep throat-bite, which other cats use, the jaguar pierces the skull of its prey with a sharp bite between the ears, thus piercing the brain and killing their target. BLIND LEOPARD ⬇️CURIOSITY⬇️ Leopard (Panthera Pardus) belongs to one of the five panther subfamilies and is the predatory feline par excellence. The leopard is present massively in sub-Saharan Africa, and in the parks of East Africa, as in Tanzania, but some of these mammals are very prolific also in sub-Eastern Asia. Leopards are part of the IUCN Red List, which classifies them as vulnerable species due to the loss of their natural habitat and the consequent fragmentation for the globe. In addition, these cats have always been hunted for their fur and for the hunters personal pride This superpredator is an animal that easily adapts to any type of habitat, which immediately becomes its territory. This can extend up to 400 km2 and includes one or two females. Its activities take place mainly during the evening, when it is easier to camouflage and stealthily act. The panthera pardus hunts any type of animal, even those much larger than him. It can in fact kill animals over 150 kg, in the absence of tigers or lions, its only rivals. The modus operandi of this feline consists in jumping to the neck of its prey and biting them, thus causing their death by suffocation. Later, thanks to his strength and agility, the leopard climbs a tree where he can eat his meal away from other predators. The leopard, however, is not just a predator. He too can be threatened by animals stronger than him. In addition to the lion and the tiger, its enemies are also hyenas, wolves, wild dogs, prairie dogs, crocodiles and bears. It is one of the few large cats to be able to climb trees and descend from them keeping their muzzles turned towards the ground. On this particular morning we spotted these 13 Wild Dog puppies who were left alone. We passed 2 hyenas going towards the puppies about 300 metres earlier. Parents arrived in the nick of time and chased approaching hyenas who were now very close. There was relief all round. Mergulhadores do Corpo de Bombeiros Militar localizaram e resgataram no final da tarde desta segunda-feira, 14, o corpo de Miguel de C. M., de 8 anos de idade. Ela era a segunda vítima do afogamento ocorrido no domingo, 13, no naufrágio de uma embarcação no Rio Palmeiras, zona rural de Taipas, no Sudeste do Tocantins. Miguel estava com outras sete pessoas no mesmo barco, quando, por volta das 13h, a embarcação do tipo chata afundou na metade do percurso. Segundo informações, ninguém usava colete salva-vidas. O adolescente Jheisson P. B., de 16 anos, também morreu afogado. Jheisson e Miguel elevaram as estatísticas de afogamentos no Estado para 51 mortes. No mesmo final de semana, mais dois homens morreram afogados, sendo um deles em São Valério da Natividade (que também fica no sudeste) e outro no município de Palmeiras do Tocantins, no Bico do Papagaio, próximo a Araguaína. Quando falamos da importância do combate ao desmatamento e às queimadas na Amazônia, estamos preocupados com os danos para as comunidades locais, mas também com os efeitos adversos que afetam lugares e comunidades mais distantes no longo prazo. Como falamos no nosso post sobre florestas, o vapor de água produzido pelas árvores na Amazônia é responsável por grande parte das chuvas que caem em outras regiões do país, como o Pantanal. E menos árvores geram menos chuva. Segundo a Embrapa, a baixa quantidade de chuvas fez com que o Pantanal tivesse a menor cheia em 47 anos. Áreas que deveriam estar alagadas, ou ao menos úmidas, estavam expostas, aumentando o espaço vulnerável ao fogo. ⠀ Desmatamento é uma ameaça a todos nós, por ser um fator de aceleração da crise climática. A boa notícia é que já existem soluções eficazes contra as queimadas e a derrubada de árvores, como a proteção de reservas indígenas, a agricultura regenerativa e sustentável e a silvicultura comunitária. @andreashembphotography berättar: – Sittandes i ett gömsle i Zimanga Private Game Reserve i Sydafrika, som är uppbyggt vid ett litet vattenhål, spenderade vi hela eftermiddagen och natten. Under de mörkaste timmarna fick vi beök av en stor leopardhanne som smög fram till vattenkanten för att dricka. Jag zoomade in för att ta ett nära porträtt av den vackra katten. ◽️ – Att sitta i afrikanska natten och vänta på vad som kan dyka upp är en otrolig upplevelse. Helt plötsligt skrider de majestätiska djuren fram ur mörkret. Det som gör det speciellt är att man kommer ner i höjd med vattenytan och verkligen kan möta djuren öga mot öga. BRAZIL A luta pela sobrevivência do maior felino das Américas em meio às queimadas históricas no Pantanal... Na tarde da última sexta-feira (11), um helicóptero da Marinha do Brasil levantou voo com um passageiro incomum: uma onça-pintada. Durante o transporte aéreo, os olhos assustados do bicho, resgatado no Pantanal, em nada lembravam o felino destemido que costumava se aproximar dos barcos, característica que fez com que ele passasse a ser conhecido na região como Ousado. Horas antes de entrar no helicóptero, o animal havia sido localizado por uma equipe de voluntários que auxiliam no resgate aos animais no Pantanal, que passa pelo pior período de queimadas das últimas décadas. Ousado estava caído no Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas, na região de Porto Jofre, na cidade de Poconé (MT), quando foi encontrado pelos voluntários, que passavam de barco pela região. O felino estava com as patas queimadas. Ele apresentou postura agressiva e teve de ser anestesiado para que fosse retirado do local. Localizado no Pantanal, o Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas é considerado o lugar com a maior concentração de onças-pintadas do mundo. Nas últimas semanas, porém, o local se tornou extremamente perigoso para os felinos. Isso porque dos 108 mil hectares da reserva, 77 mil foram atingidos pelo fogo até o momento, segundo dados do Corpo de Bombeiros de Mato Grosso. The Pantanal of western Brazil is the worlds largest wetland and one of the jewels of our planet. Easily one of the most unique and beautiful ecosystems on the planet. It is the home of the jaguar - I first visited while working on the 1st jaguar story for Nat Geo 23 years ago - and saw 5 jaguars in a week - last time I was there one day I saw 14 in a day. Fotos feitas antes e depois das queimadas no Pantanal de Mato Grosso mostram a devastação no entorno da Rodovia Transpantaneira, que liga o município de Poconé, a 104 km de Cuiabá, a Porto Jofre, na divisa com Mato Grosso do Sul. Incêndios destroem o bioma há 3 meses, provocando alertas climáticos, a morte de animais e a retirada de indígenas de seus territórios. A Transpantaneira tem 150 km de extensão e é conhecida por ser um atrativo turístico da região. Ela cruza a maior planície alagável do planeta. As imagens feitas antes das queimadas, na época das chuvas, mostram a biodiversidade da região. Agora, a paisagem é de deserto, com a mata em cinzas. Uma das áreas atingidas, o Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas perdeu 85% da cobertura vegetal. Segundo o Instituto Centro Vida (ICV), ao todo, os incêndios já destruíram uma área de 92 mil hectares do parque, que tem 108 mil hectares. O Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas é conhecido por deter a maior concentração de onças-pintadas do mundo. Turistas de todo o mundo vão ao local fazer observação de onças-pintadas a bordo de barcos. De acordo com análise do ICV, as onças-pintadas, que já são ameaçadas de extinção, agora também são ameaçadas pelas queimadas. Dados do Prevfogo, o Centro Nacional de Prevenção e Combate aos incêndios florestais do Ibama, em 2020 mostram que a área queimada no Pantanal já passou de 2,3 milhões de hectares, sendo 1,2 milhão em Mato Grosso e mais de 1 milhão em Mato Grosso do Sul. Essa área de mais de 2 milhões representa quase 10 vezes o tamanho das cidades de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro juntas. Nesta semana o governo decretou situação de emergência em Mato Grosso. O decreto irá valer por 90 dias, podendo ser prorrogado. O governo federal prometeu liberou nesta terça-feira (15) recursos para combate às chamas no estado e no Mato Grosso do Sul. . . Mortes de Onças-pintadas no Pantanal. Estou muito triste ao ver todos os dias as imagens de animais mortos nos incêndios no pantanal. Fico arrasado só de pensar que uma ou mais onças que fotografei em Porto Jofre, MT, podem ter morrido queimadas ou estarem muito feridas. Choro a cada imagem que vejo nas tevês ou nas redes sociais. É muito triste tudo isso! Me revolta ver que a cada dia que passa, a imagem do país fica cada vez mais desgastada no exterior devido ao descaso do poder público com a proteção do meio ambiente e dos seres que nele habitam. Isso sem falar no impacto na vida das pessoas que vivem no pantanal e que dependem das onças para sua sobrevivência. Já está mais que provado que uma onça viva vale muito mais do que uma onça morta! De acordo com um trabalho divulgado pela ONG Panthera Brasil, por ano, o avistamento de onças gera cerca de 7 milhões de dólares por ano na região de Porto Jofre, no Pantanal mato-grossense, com a vinda de estrangeiros que querem ver o maior felino das Américas. Con 11 años de edad, estaba en el Golfo Nuevo con una hermosa cría morfo gris, al cual el equipo de investigadores del proyecto colaborativo “Siguiendo Ballenas”, llamaron Aconcagua. 🐋Paciencia junto a su cría recorrieron 17.663 kms durante los 190 días que su rastreador emitió señales. I struggled for weeks with this one - and although signed, I’m still not sure it’s done! My original reference was a leopard in flat overcast light - and although I liked the lines of the body the light was boring boring boring!! Leopards are such elusive cats - real ‘now you see me, now you don’t’ kind of creatures - in this painting I wanted to capture that. The foreground and background is a total figment of my imagination and so are the dappled shadows falling across the body. I wanted the viewer to imagine it slipping off into the trees behind at any moment and feel blessed that they had seen that few seconds glimpse at all! But is it all just too dark? Our plan for our last morning drive on a recent Safari, was to head to the area where we’d seen Tingana Male Leopard, who was feeding on a tree the previous day. As we got to the area we noticed some uneasy Zebra and a Hyena close by, our guide switched off the vehicle to investigate. A few moments later our tracker says Leopard, then he says two Leopards, to our excitement it was Tingana male and the Nsele female. Not long after sighting them she was enticing him and they mated to the delight of all on the vehicle. The mating was vigorous for close to 2 hours and they eventually gave it a break and rested in a thicket. 🇬🇧After the fires in Pantanal, I led a Tour in Porto Jofre. We cruised the labyrinth of rivers that snake through the region, for 4 days. We watched and photographed 14 different Jaguars, without counting the reports the other guide @pantanaltoursguide . All Jaguars individuals were healthy, including this male which was seen in the area for the first time, mating with a known female jaguar at a sandbar along the Três Irmãos river. @jaguaridproject asked us to give him a name, so we introduce you : Forasteiro, which means Outsider. I will be posting photos of all the different Jaguars we saw during this Tour in the following days. We believe that most, if not all, individuals managed to survive in the burned areas, as they did not burn at the same time. Jaguars, caimans and capybaras live near the water, they are skilled swimmers and had previously experienced fire. Leopard sighting at Rajaji National Park, Haridwar PC: Viru Negi @indian_birding_guide Rajaji National Park is predominantly formed from dense green jungles, and this environment forms a habitat for a number of animals. The park is at the northwestern limit of distribution for both elephants and tigers in India. The park is most renowned for its Elephants and Leopards. The mountain goat, goral is another noteworthy resident. It is mainly confined to the precipitous pine-covered slopes. You might come across huge herds of chital, sometimes as many as 250 to a herd. Sambar, barking deer, hog deer, nilgai, wild boar and sloth bears also inhabit these forests though you may not always catch a glimpse of these. The rhesus macaque and the common langur are fairly common here. Tigers and leopards are the prime predators in Rajaji. The leopard cat, jungle cat, civet and yellow-throated marten are other carnivores. Mammals like the hyena, jackal and the Bengal fox scavenge in the park. This lucky elephant was found and rescued just in time by community members in Nannapa Community Conservancy. NRT staff joined Nannapa rangers, @loisaba_conservancy and @kenyawildlifeservice to rescue this bull elephant, who had got himself well and truly stuck in the mud. The elephant was spotted by local herders, who immediately alerted Nanapa manager Jackson Lekumoisa. Jackson coordinated all the support teams, who worked together to rescue the elephant from what would have been certain death. Tired but free, the young bull plodded away uninjured. E lá se vão 6 anos... Nossa, como o tempo voa. Há exatos seis anos atrás eu tinha meu primeiro avistamento de onça pintada na natureza. Havia acabado de chegar ao pantanal e, em menos de 10 dias de trabalho, ja tive essa oportunidade incrível. De seis anos pra cá muita coisa me ocorreu, tive experiências incríveis, conheci lugares e pessoas inesquecíveis e posso dizer que esse momento jamais sairá de minha memória. Estávamos fazendo uma pequena caminhada pós lanche em um safári pela manhã. O capão do outro lado do açude parecia um pouco agitado demais, os guias de campo já nos haviam alertado sobre a possível presença de um predador grande nas redondezas, a mata não estava em silêncio. Gralhas e outras aves vocalizavam sem parar, até que o primeiro indício de um grande predador apareceu. As capivaras começaram a vocalizar também, pelo pouco conhecimento que tinha sabia que elas não entrariam em alerta por uma simples serpente ou algo menor. Poucos segundos depois, os roedores correram para a água, mergulhando como se não houvesse amanhã. Foi quando ela saiu, de dentro do capão, como se quisesse apenas se fazer presente. Tinha minha câmera em mãos, mas congelei... lembro que meu companheiro de trabalho @p_canovas me tirou de um transe e me falou: “Tira foto, Guilherme...”. Ele sendo um fotógrafo muito mais experiente, já havia feito uma boa dezena de clicks. Foi aí quando, com as mãos trêmulas, apontei a câmera para dona onça e fiz esse registro. Apenas uma foto, uma foto de uma onça. Até quarta (dia 16), o bioma já tinha 5.603 focos de calor, o maior número registrado na série história de setembro e praticamente o mesmo número do mês inteiro de agosto, com 5.935 pontos. . De janeiro à primeira quinzena de setembro deste ano, o Pantanal teve mais de 2,9 milhões de hectares atingidos pelo fogo, cerca de 19% do bioma e que corresponde a pouco mais de 19 vezes a capital de SP. . Mas o que podemos fazer? . ✔️ Apoie instituições que estão na linha de frente de combate aos incêndios e de suporte aos animais atingidos: @sospantanal, @grad_brasil, @institutoararaazuloficial, @amparasilvestre, @pantanal_relief_fund, @ihp_pantanal_ e @comitiva.esperanca; ✔️ Reduza ou mesmo abandone o consumo de carne. Além da produção de gases de efeito estufa, a pecuária é um dos motivos para o aumento das queimadas nos biomas brasileiros; ✔️ Pressione o poder público para que ele utilize o orçamento para prevenção e combate a incêndios, exija medidas preventivas por parte do governo e uma maior fiscalização ambiental. .
