When I was four years old my mother had a stroke. It eventually led to her physical body being in what we refer to as a vegatitive state. My father was then a single parent. The relationship I built with my father over the next fourteen years was a great gift. He was my best friend. His sense of humor, love for connection and conversation, love of dancing and truly his love to enjoy life inspired me. I write this today to honor my father Archie Gunn on the twenty fourth anniversary of his passing. He is a great man. His legacy lives through me. I have become my own man. Today in NE Syria my good friend Zau Seng was killed in an airstrike. Zau was an unbelievably good man. After surviving a lifetime of fighting in his home state of Kachin, Burma, he left his home and his family to help the refugees fleeing the fighting in a foreign country. Bawi Cung Nung 3.14.2020 Sam’s Club in Midland, Texas. Bawi, a father of 3, immigrated from Myanmar (Burma) about 5 years ago for freedom and safety in the US. Tragically him and his two sons were attacked by 19-year old Jose Gomez back in March. One week prior, Texas had its first confirmed Covid-19 case. Gomez confronted the family at a Sam’s Club at knifepoint, in which Bawi and his sons were brutally wounded. Sam’s Club employee, Zach Owen and an off-duty border patrol agent, Bernie Ramie intervened and were able to restrain Gomez until the police arrived. Gomez later confessed to attacking the family with the intent of killing them. He believed that the family was Chinese and responsible for spreading coronavirus. He is charged with 3 counts of attempted capital murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. You never know what you got until it’s gone... I’ve never experienced so much deep sadness in one continuous wave and waves thereafter. Our Uncle Albert was more than most fathers can be out there. He was so selfless, he loved us nieces and nephews more than he loved himself. It pains me that I will never hear his voice, receive a phone call or message. I cannot even begin to express what he gave us... it was the closest to unconditional joy and humanistic love. He never looked down on our family cos we were poor, instead he rose us up everytime he possibly could by sending us surprises, gifting us with LV bags , jewellery, clothes, and fed us with every best food imaginable. My brother said every time he would visit and stay with us, it would feel like Christmas and this sums it up , he would travel with impossible loads and sacks filled with goodies for us all. He was the biggest gift giver ever known in my family to me my sister and brother even up until now. The biggest gift he would give us was his pure love and care for us. When our grandad (his brothers father in law) passed away he surprised us on the day of the funeral and flew especially to be with us from HK just for the service. He took my family to trips in China, Hong Kong and Macau and paid always for the most extravagant and best things for us... he was so generous and knew we couldn’t afford things and he truly just wanted us to have the most amazing experiences for us in life and we were gifted these memories with him. You bought class to our family when we only knew the rough. I am getting flashbacks of all our times together and most of all I keep hearing your voice in my head and your laugh. He was my roots and our uncle in Hong Kong who loved us beyond measure. He would be waiting at the airport with flowers every time I arrived and would see us off back to UK every time. And now we can not fly back to see you off. Socsoc why did you leave us? We love you so much. I carry every thing of you in me as your blood runs through my veins. We hope you are at peace. On that day, we sadly lost an absolutely beautiful family. Little known secret... Ron caught wind of this hard to handle, hard working Gap manager that had high expectations for performance and was holding his direct supervisor accountable. The powers that be, didn’t know exactly what to do with him. Ron stepped up and said, I’ll take him... send him to me. I’ll figure him out and report back. Ron and this manager went on to being a dynamic duo and they were a force to be reckoned with. He gave this manager an ability to be understood which allowed him to achieve results, be recognized, get promoted and ultimately pay it forward to allow others like him to have the same opportunities. This photo was taken June 2nd, 1995 the day I became a naturalized citizen in the US. I was born in Taiwan. My father served in the army, my mother brought me to voting booth as a child. We never spoke about politics at home. For many years I considered myself to be apolitical - partly out of privilege but mostly from a lack of faith in a broken system. I saw people like me while marching in the streets, I didn’t see them in office. A few weeks ago, Gov. Cuomo proposed cuts to hospital funding and medicaid at the height of a pandemic. Yuh-Line’s ferocious speech on behalf of working class people of color immediately captured my attention. My admiration for her work grows every day. @yuhline_niou is both a silent and capital G. It doesn’t take much to notice all of the ways she shows up for New York. In the broad strokes, she made history as the first Asian-American to ever represent Chinatown in NYS. When protestors were corralled by the NYPD on the Manhattan Bridge, she leveraged her office and made calls to the mayor and police chief to deescalate the situation. She is a member of the @bphacaucus that is crafting and passing historical police reform bills. But if you look closely, you’ll find that she really shines in the quiet acts of service: packaging hand sanitizer at 2am, making sure her elderly constituents have delicious meals delivered to them while keeping local businesses afloat. A young person with a disability proposed ideas to make NY more accessible, Niou (who is open about being on the autism spectrum) turned it into a bill. I would be proud to support a candidate with these values and actions regardless of their background, but the fact that she is also a Taiwanese-American immigrant is the scallion on the pancake. Though she is widely admired by many, she faces serious opposition in the upcoming primary. He’s back! Mo Tenzing, missing since mid July, turns out to have been living in a flat in Camden with a lady who thought she’d adopted him. She took him to the vet five weeks ago, who found his chip and saw fit to give her the serial number but not look it up on the database to ascertain who’s cat he was - only told her how to go about changing his owner details. Only when she tried to do this did we learn where he was. It’s a crap system and vets must do better. Weeks of heartbreak for us, thinking he was gone forever, and now for this lady and her family, having to part with a cat they thought was theirs. Come on vets, it’s not hard. Check for chips as a matter of routine, run the database, and if the person presenting the pet is not the owner, get in touch! You’re happy enough charging astronomical fees for piddling treatments, the least you can do is give half an arse about animal thieves... Displayed here are four illustrations of the series showing the discovery of a baby qilin in the neon streets of Tsim Sha Tsui, the famous Goldfish Street of Mong Kok where koi are sold in giant luminescent tanks, the densely packed apartments of Chungking Mansions wracked by summer typhoons like dragons, and the fishing boats full of fresh seafood at Sai Kung Harbour where the deep green waters hide coral reefs and creatures alike. . . . Hailing from Hong Kong and Singapore, Christina Qi recently graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and is now working in Boston as a concept artist at OtherSide Entertainment and illustrator for various other game projects. She paints big monsters for a living now and is very grateful for all the distances shes traveled to get here. Matt Jaha, my cousin, died this week. He was 37 years old, born November 9, 1982. Matt was five years younger than me and just one year younger than my brother, Evan. We grew up very close to Matt and his younger siblings Nick and Michelle, some of the best memories of my early life are all of us together in our grandparents’ basement. Together, we all went through what was the first major trauma of my life, the death of our grandmother Flo in 1996 from cancer. • I generally avoid the term “talent” because I believe most creative people push through all obstacles to create, regardless of their innate abilities. But with Matt, there was no other way to describe his musical abilities than raw talent. He excelled at any instrument he touched with an effortlessness that I’ve rarely, if ever, seen elsewhere. He was also a voracious reader with incredible taste in literature, a sophisticated lover of film, and had an ever-inquisitive and imaginative mind. • In 2003, I asked Matt if he knew any “punk drummers” that might be interested in starting a new band with me that would be called Coliseum. He said he’d like to try to give it a shot himself. I don’t think I even knew he could play drums. He bought a white Tama kit on eBay from somewhere in Illinois and I rented a minivan to drive us there to pick it up. On that 10-12 hour round trip that went late into the night we talked about music and ideas and sifted through a stack of CDs I’d brought as inspiration reference points. My mom told me she sometimes doesnt recognize me. Ive gotten so big she say.. lol. Today, Im another year older. When I was a kid like most kids I liked action heroes, comic characters.. well mission accomplished now I look like one lol. Honestly with every passing year I feel so bless. I feel bless to wake up every morning doing what I love. I have amazing clients some new some old all of which Im incredibly thankful for. I have a very small circle of friends which I consider family, love more than anything. Love my parents so much for all the sacrifices they made so I can have a much better life in America. Love my sisters so much for always supporting and believing in me. Im even thankful for covid, it gave me more time to spend with my aging parents. I guess the whole point of this post is live your life to its fullest. Follow your dreams, cause if you work hard enough, believe in God, and if its in Gods Will then dreams become reality.
