Irwin explores the interplay between light and color. He manipulates the way colors generated by fluorescent tubes spread into space, playing with chromatic rhythms, syncopated alternating colors, temperatures and light densities. The intense presence of the Robert Irwin’s works is not reduced to a formal apprehension of lighting systems; the entire space is impregnated with this harmony of colorful phenomena and natural light. His installations do not seek to provoke spectacular effects, but they remain open to the sensitivity and perception of everyone, allowing as many perceptions of the work as many eyes are there to see it. As an audience member we might not think too much about how a gig comes to be. There is a kind of magic about a gig and it’s not hard to imagine that gigs just magically appear like some sort of Brigadoon. They of course don’t and every single gig has blood, sweat and (yes sometimes) tears that goes into the preparations for it, the gig itself and the aftermath. Kind of like an iceberg the gig itself is just the tiny sliver of the thing that’s visible. What is often invisible is the extremely hard work and graft that goes into making the gig happen at all. Talking about the people struggling in Northern Ireland music scene earlier on twitter alongside musicians I mentioned freelancers and just wanted to go into more detail here about what amazing freelance crew members that work in the music industry do to (literally in some cases) keep the lights on. Lights, stage, sound, equipment and so (SO) much more are all set up many hours in advance and take many hours after the show to dismantle by a crew of highly skilled technicians working ridiculously hard. On a personal note Snow Patrol’s crew (in the picture working their asses off to set up the stage) are incredible and without them we’d be lost. Literally and metaphorically. We have been so lucky and some of them have been with us for over 20 years. They are family. And I know loads of bands in NI will feel the same way about the amazing people working hard all over our wee country to help make gigs happen and make them special. Shows sure as hell don’t happen without them. But now shows aren’t happening and the NI music scene needs support across the board. Today, Kunsthalle Lingen is opening the exhibition “Grundrisse” with our artist Susa Templin. The complex work “Liquid Crystal Labyrinth” is a photo installation, whose transparent image carriers hang from the ceiling, creating a luminous atmosphere of light and colour. The artist, working with analogue photography, seemingly deconstructs and distorts photographed space with a multiple exposure technique and thereby creates new abstract spaces, reminiscent of memories. Stephen Knapp has been making work that is transformed by light for over thirty years, producing vibrant light installations he refers to as paintings. These large-scale works utilize minimal tools, harnessing simply light and dichroic glass to throw a multitude of colors against the walls and room. The installations are not sketched out beforehand or programmed by computer, but rather created during the installation process as Knapp moves intuitively to choreograph his intricate light patterns. “The fun of what I do with light, is that there is nothing in our visual memory that prepares us for what I’m doing,” said Knapp in a short film about his work. “The fact that what I create can just be done with light, that there is no paint on these panels, is absolutely astounding to people. What I am trying to do most of all here is challenge any traditional notion of perception. What is it? Is it real? Is it not real? Does it matter?” These works have been featured in solo exhibitions around the country including the Boise Art Museum, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Naples Art Museum, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Flint Institute of Art, among others.
