The last time I spoke in public before New York closed down was on March 12. It was at the Museum of the Moving Image @movingimagenyc . I was introducing the North American premiere of Mostafa Derkaouis About Some Meaningless Events (De quelques événements sans signification / أحداث بلا دلالة ) It felt vaguely unconscionable to go. The city would soon live to the apocalyptic rhythms of ambulance sirens, but museums, schools and restaurants were still open. I was hoping the screening would be postponed but it wasnt, and I felt responsible toward this particular movie. About Some Meaningless Events was made in 1974, banned right away, forgotten about, and thought lost forever. Until, a few years ago, a print was found --and restored-- at the Filmoteca de Catalunya @filmotecacat . It is a bewildering gem of political cinema, or rather, of how to make movies politically. At the peak of state repression, a collective of artists asks what a nascent national cinema should be for, and how it intersects with life on the streets. The movie had waited 45 years to be seen. I didnt find it in my heart to cancel. Derkaoui was ill, and Léa Morin, who worked tirelessly on bringing the film back to life, had asked me to represent. Understandably, only a dozen people showed up; it made the Redstone Theater feel even more gigantic. The good news is that tomorrow, everyone will have a chance to see About Some Meaningless Events online, streaming from Marrakech. It is part of of the amazing CINIMA3, a program of exhibitions, screenings, and conversations organized by @_lea_morin at Le18. In 2012, @candicewiggins2 asked me to be a part of her passion project. Candice titled it Radical Chic. It is a tribute to 1960’s culture, the Black Panther movement , Blaxploitaton movies and the emergence and challenges of the WNBA. Read Candice’s important thoughts in light of George Floyd’s murder at www.candicewiggins.com. Her message is clear. We can all be freedom fighters, we can all be activists, we are all required to do what is in our power to fight an unjust system. Those with privilege must use that privilege to effect change. Black Lives Matter. Candice brought me a set of iconic images of the 1960’s. Images of Angela Davis, Huey Newton, Kathleen Cleaver and Pam Grier. She said, “I want to do this”. George Floyd’s murder exposed long ignored issues. Race issues that are obvious to BIPOC and happily ignored by privilege. Now we are hopefully seeing a path to change. I am hopeful we will finally see a better world. I am honored that Candice allowed me to make these images with her.
