نکاح نامہ کیوں دیکھنا ہے؟ ————————————————————— A few days before my Nikkah last year, I asked my mother to show me the نکاح نامہ because I wanted to study it. She was shocked at my demand and bluntly refused. That’s when I first realised how we are conditioned to believe some concepts which aren’t even true. . Women in our culture never get to see their نکاح نامہ before their نکاح , and I’m sure 99% don’t even read the life-time contract when they’re signing on. . Marriage in Islam is a LEGAL contract between two parties, not a holy sacrament. Many terms & conditions in the marriage contract are obligatory, while others can be set and agreed to at the time of marriage. . I want to start a series of education about a نکاح نامہ because all the information can’t be put in one post. . First, I want to talk about the most misunderstood clause: حق مہر It is in clause 13-16, it is supposed to be a gift from husband to wife but our society has given different meanings to it. Instead of gift, it is now known as the “Guarantee of the relation” but we often forget that گارنٹی تو چیزوں کی ہوتی ہے، رشتوں کی نہیں! . Haq Mehr is of two types. 1- Mu’ajjal: give it promptly 2- Ghair Mu’wajjal: to give it in the later stages . Our society has made a 3rd way out itself by making a norm of handing over Haq Mehr to the woman only at divorce. . This legal requirement has been made a mockery of, either by fixing an unrealistically large amount and then not paying it, or fixing a ridiculously small amount, which there is no need to pay. . This Clause is not the only one which needs to be discussed beforehand, with the bride and groom present. . Did you ever read a نکاح نامہ ? . Will you want to read yours before signing it? . Were you ever taught about حق مہر ? . There are many other aspects to this one clause which are impossible to be jotted down in one post. Cinematic parallel: Fitoor (2016) & Kalank (2019) Noor fell in love with Firdaus when he was hired by Hazrat Begum as a stable keeper. But fate & Hazrat’s command separated him from Firdaus. At least not immediately... But here is the silver lining, the process is slow but the process is nurturing. Because once you fall in love with yourself again, and you will- I promise, once you taste the freedom of being in love with yourself, of putting your being top priority, of having the power of saying, “ This is toxic for me so I must let go”, “This is hurting me so I need to part ways”, “This is what makes me grow as a person so I must pursue it”, it will be hard to not fall in love. With yourself. And the right kind of love will make you more empathetic. More kind. More understanding. Because then you will see your struggle in everybody around.
