What is Basal Metabolic Rate? And why does it matter? The basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the rate of energy expenditure of a person at rest, to eliminate the variable effect of physical activity. The BMR accounts for approximately 60-70% of the daily energy expenditure (varies from person to person). Thus, it includes energy used for normal body cellular homeostasis, cardiac function, brain and other nerve function, and so on. Basically, BMR is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions. The BMR is affected by a variety of factors: -Body weight: the bigger the body, the more calories it expends -Organ size: organs are metabolically expensive (expend a large number of calories each day) -Lean mass: one pound of muscle burns about six calories per day, one pound of fat burns two calories per day -Growth periods: during periods of growth (i.e. children growing to adults) metabolism increases -Age: as the body ages, the metabolic rate decreases. This usually starts around age 30. -Body temperature: core body temperature impacts overall metabolic rate. For 1 degree temperature increase, metabolic rate increases 7% -Hormones: the effects on metabolism vary depending on the hormone in question. Some speed it up, while some slow it down. The thyroid hormone has a particularly strong effect. One popular way to estimate BMR is through the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation (calories/day): Male: 9.99 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 4.92 x age (yrs) + 5 Female: 9.99 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 4.92 x age (yrs) – 161 For example a 48 year old man who is 5’8” (180cm) and weighs 176 lbs (80kg) , using the equation above: (9.99 X 80 ) + (6.25 X 180) – (4.92 X 48) + 5 = 799.2 + 1,125 – 236.16 + 5 = 1693.04 This mans BMR is 1693.04 calories per day Your BMR is just one number you need to know if youre trying to lose weight. All of the calories you burn in a day is known as your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).
