~ Loving again ~ Hi guys, how have you all been? Lil life update if you’re interested: I haven’t posted in a while mainly because I’ve started university and it’s been quite a big transition. I had to take 8 months out prior because I was so ill (physically and mentally, yay double whammy) so it’s been tough integrating back into normal life. I still want to keep posting on here, it’s a good way to process my feelings and keep working through trauma. Clara asked me what was my idea of love. I have to say that someone that never heard about my thoughts on this topic randomly gave me once sparkling water as a present in the morning. in the event of an emergency // this poem, in the new book, was actually written about two years ago. it is after a Sarah Kay poem of the same title. it is, to me, not as beautiful as the one it is after, but it is true. i loved writing this. & while i may not be able to do what this poem actually says, i love that these words can honor the parts of me that i know matter to others. my mother once told me,when i was 9 or 10 years old, that she loved my smile& that she wished i smiled more. i have never forgotten the way she said it, and the sound of her voice. my father is always asking me to speak louder, so my voice is his. my 12th grade English teacher, Linda, reminded me that i loved poetry, & it was during her class that i rediscovered this medium that has become an essential part of who i am. & i could go on and on, telling you about all the people and places that make up who i am. but this poem is quite self-explanatory. ❤️ - @gabywrites on Instagram

Portrait of Yesterday as a lady dressed in lilies. One of the most common flowers requested for funerals is the beautiful lily. They represent the innocence and purity that has been restored to the soul of the departed. In this piece, I have thus given Yesterday a body that grieves deaths, a ghost of the past. Yesterday begins with a sunrise and ends right before the following; Ive thus shown a string of Yesterdays walking in a time that existed before the present. The more the bloodshed that occurred that day, the redder her dress. The hands that each Yesterday is tied to belong to the people that either lost their lives that day or their loved ones. So the hands can touch their respective yesterdays only because they are trapped in that time. And as a newer Yesterday takes form, the dead accept that they have to move on, while the living cant let go that easily, so they hold onto her. Each Yesterday, remembered by her footprints. Rosaline This is a poem/song for Rosaline: the girl who broke Romeo’s heart (if you can call it that). I’m a bit obsessed with her. The Earth is a Black Woman. We dont deserve her, but she loves us anyway. We treat her as if shes ours for the taking. We drink from her cup, eat from her palm, kissed by her skin, held in her arms. Shes so strong - we think - she wont miss our lack of care. We watch her soldier on. And how do we repay her? She wipes her tears with her back turned and spins around with a smile. She loves us unconditionally. And how do we repay her? We build on her back, sit in her lap, we nurse from her breast, and so on. She is the first Mother. The first is an exalted place in the race normally. We should crown her with honeysuckle, drape her in silk, adorn her with gold. But even those belong to her too. What gift can you give your Mother when all you have and all you know Comes from her? You wrap it carefully. She accepts it graciously, beaming at your pride in returning to Her what is hers. And she is, somehow, proud of us too. We dont deserve her but she loves us anyway. She is the closest any of us have ever gotten to unconditional love. The Earth is a Black Woman. How do we repay her? She doesnt ask for much. She could destroy us in a heartbeat. Yet we kick her and bite. And still, somehow, she looks with love. After years, decades, millennia of feeding off a well so deep We foolishly think its bottomless. We keep drinking. Even as she gasps for breath - Her rich brown soil still fertile and yielding. We dont deserve her but she loves us anyway. The closest any of us have gotten to unconditional love. How can we begin, to repent, heal, wake up? Walk gently. Walk Gently. Walk Gently. I’m feeling low, feeling the pain of the world, reading through human history and seeing the same stories of hate, oppression and delusion again and again. I do my best to hold onto the beauty, to focus on the gift of being, but within the realm of privilege and awareness I can’t convince myself to just be joyous and grateful. I’m sad and angry. I’m crying and hurting. But I’m not meant to wallow. I’m meant to do what work I can before I die and so each day this is what I try and do: I show up, benefiting from a racist system, putting in effort to dismantle it, to abolish the broken conceits that continue to harm and murder people in the name of power and greed, and above all I aim to create work that inspires, that lifts us up so that we continue onward together in the fight. Sometimes I want to give up, to walk into the forest and never look back. But we can’t give up. We know our history to some extent, but if we understand anything about our awful and magical human path it’s this: anything is possible, so let us stand prepared and united. i’ve been reading weijun’s the collected schizophrenias recently & thinking abt what mental health means to me. i wrote this piece in one go, and did not edit—i think the last point for the reason that my diagnosis, or misdiagnoses, operate in a way that induce permanent self-doubt; this decision was deliberate: a departure from normal. the spacing was not deliberate, but i think to me it represents gaps in consciousness that i experience. or, for that matter, gaps in experience. the kissing is a coping mechanism, one i craved once upon a time & now not at all. i am healing & i recognise this—and i am writing this partly to communicate that to myself. this is am i an addict. the answer, of course, is yes. the answer, of course, is that i am not the person i was even a month ago. the light at the end of the tunnel is near, and it tastes, a little, like sunshine - @poetrybysheh on Instagram
