On the one-year anniversary, after Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas, little progress has been made with the restoration to most of the island’s civic buildings and infrastructure. The island is left without a school for children to expand their education, a clinic for immediate medical care, health care facilities or a police station. Hope Town does not have permanent power, as residents continue to live on portable and back-up generators. The community is continuing to experience an economic disaster, without any income, commercial activity, tourism or commerce of any impact for 12 months. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire island has been closed to international tourism and the government has imposed severe quarantine requirements for Bahamians who attempt to return to the island. COVID-19, in addition to Hurricane Dorian, has left the economy both devastated and paralyzed. This photo was captured last year only days after the destruction left behind by Hurricane Dorian. Quando eu estava na faculdade de arquitetura, falava que iluminação era só colocar pontinhos na planta. aí, eu consegui um estágio numa loja de iluminação, foi nesse estágio que eu entendi que não era só isso. ⠀ Depois de 2 anos neste estagio comecei a me perguntar se escritórios de iluminação projetavam como lojas, pesquisei por arquitetos de iluminação e mandei meu curriculo para todos pedindo uma oportunidade de um mes durante as minhas férias. Vim para SP passar 1 mês em um escritório de arquitetura especializado (um dos mais renomados do Brasil por sinal, Estudio Carlos Fortes) e voltei para meu curso de arquitetura e estagio na loja. ⠀ Em 2012 fui pra Natal, comecei a trabalhar com uma arquiteta de iluminação de lá (Em BH, era alto padrão, as pessoas que iam na loja que eu trabalhava entendiam a importância da iluminação - Em Natal, as pessoas não queriam investir em iluminação e não entendiam sua importância.). Em 2014, ainda em Natal abri meu escritório, porque eu queria poder projetar sem ter vínculos com a loja, ter mais opções para atender melhor seu cliente, fazer diversos orçamentos... ⠀ ⠀ 1 ano depois eu não estava conseguindo fazer só iluminação, então voltei para aquela lista de e-mails de 2012, mais de 150 e-mails, 10 responderam e um belo dia recebi uma ligação de uma das sócias de um dos escritórios mais renomados do Brasil em iluminação, Foco Luz e Desenho. Me mudei em 1 semana para SP sem olhar pra trás... ⠀ ⠀ Entrei em 2015... Fiquei 3 anos por lá, aprendi, trabalhei em projetos incríveis e desafiadores como a Lojas Dufry, Lojas Baccio de Latte, Hotel Four Seasons... ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Em 2016, comecei a dar aulas no IED, tive oportunidades de palestrar e comecei a descobrir este meu outro lado e final de 2018 percebi que não conseguia mais conciliar a FOCO com as aulas e palestras... ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Foi ai que abri meu escritório, na cara, na coragem e com uma bagagem que foi conquistada ao longo de 10 anos de forma intensiva! - @luguerrald on Instagram

On June 17 both Kolea& Ian were arrested in Hakipu’u on our tiny road in front of their homes, while protecting iwi kupuna & historic/culturally significant sites from further desecration & our ahupua’a from further pollution.I ask for your prayers as a wife, as a mother,& as a witness of these events. On that day I listened,as I’m sure some of you did also, to Kualoa Ranch’s Mr. Morgan ask the police officers to “take care of that” as he pointed to my husband. This was after an hour of trying to mediate, an hour of explaining to the police & to KR that: 1. There is no active permits for any work to be done on this property 2. You cannot legally dig trenches on a known burial site or a registered historic site without following the legal processes & protocols 3. You cannot legally reconnect & continue to use a collapsed/broken cesspool that DOH has already cited & demanded be abandoned & closed up 4. How can you arrest ppl for standing in the road when Kualoa Ranch has a massive unpermitted gate (also cited for violation by DPP) directly across our road blocking/obstructing the entire road itself? And yet despite it all, Kolea & Ian were arrested simply so KR could do illegal and unpermitted work that day. I won’t lie, I’m concerned about what today holds. Im concerned about the backwardsness& corruption of the entire system. I’m concerned how this will affect my husband,I’m concerned about how this will affect our kids, and most of all I’m concerned how this will affect the kuleana of lineal descendants in the future. With 4 keiki who are also lineal descendants & moopuna to these iwi in Hakipu’u, I worry if I have to 1 day watch my sons & my daughter be carried away from me,carried away from this ‘āina for shouldering their kuleana to iwi kūpuna & standing for what’s pono. At the end of the day, no matter the outcome of the court,I know that these men stood for what was right. The Coral Springs Police Department supports Suicide Awareness Month. Depression and anxiety do not choose who it will affect, but the impact of suicide has ripples well beyond the surface. On September 15, 2015, Detective Dan Cucchi lost his life to suicide. He left behind his wife, two sons, a large family, friends, and a family of brothers and sisters in blue. Known as a dedicated family man, he was often referred to as the “Father Dan” by the younger law enforcement personnel he mentored. Dans law enforcement career started in 1986 with the Oakland Police Department. He would serve with the department through the merger with Broward Sheriffs Office. As a Broward Sheriff deputy, Dan earned the rank of Sergeant before his retirement in 2006. In 2009, Dan joined the Coral Springs Police Department. It did not take long for his talent as an investigator to be recognized and gain Dan a position with the Crimes Against Persons (CAPS) division. Dan struggled to cope with much of what he had seen throughout his 29-year career, as well as some health issues. Many first responders suffer in silence from depression and anxiety as a result of traumatic incidents and rarely seek help. Dan’s story is much like others who have died by suicide. Yet, his story provided us with a difficult and valuable lesson, “It’s OK to not be OK.” Dan was and for many still is remembered as a father, a brother, a husband, a son, a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker, a detective, and most recently after he passed a grandfather. We strongly support and encourage all to openly talk about mental health. It’s not taboo; it is crucial. We share Dan’s story today to remind everyone there is help available for you. If you have feelings of depression or suicide, please ask for help. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255 or Text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the USA. On September 27, 1804, Anna McNeill Whistler was born in Wilmington. McNeill was made famous in the renowned painting, “Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist’s Mother,” commonly known as “Whistler’s Mother.” Shortly after her birth, Anna McNeill moved with her family to New York. In 1831, she married George Washington Whistler, a close friend of her brother. After growing up in the U.S. and Russia, attending West Point for a brief time and then moving to Paris to study art, the Whistlers’ son James began to split his time between Paris and London. He continued to develop his craft, becoming an important figure in contemporary art circles and generating controversy for his greater focus on color and arrangement than on realism. Anna Whistler moved to London in 1863 to live with her son, and, in 1871, he painted her as the figure in “Whistler’s Mother.” The painting was first shown in 1872, extending Whistler’s reputation, but it has received mixed reviews throughout much of its history. “Whistler’s Mother” now hangs in the Musee D’Orsay in Paris and has been rarely exhibited in the United States. PFC. Ramon S. Subejano was a Filipino-American soldier who earned the nickname One Man Army for slaying bodies all over the European Theater during WW2. He served with Co. A, 358th Inf. Reg., 90th Inf Div and saw combat on Utah Beach on DDAY, the Ardennes, Northern France, the Netherlands, and deep into Germany. He served as a sniper, was wounded a total of 4 times during the war, earned 17 medals, and has been credited for killing hundreds of Germans, reports suggest up to 400. During one battle, he was the sole survivor of his unit after his patrol was ambushed. On December 7, 1944 in the vicinity of Dillengen, Germany, Subejano single handedly attacked a fortified building, making his way under devastating 20 mm and machine gun fire. He entered the enemy filled structure, going from room to room, killing five enemy, wounding six and capturing 37; an action which would earn him the Silver Star. At the end of the war he was flown to London for the victory parade, where he was presented to King George and Sir Winston Churchill. Back in the States, he was hailed as a hero and in later life met Marilyn Monroe, JFK and other famous people. Helden in de zorg Het zorgpersoneel leverde zeer grote inspanningen tijdens de coronacrisis. Zonder twijfel zijn zij de grote helden van deze crisis. In onze gemeente bleven de personeelsleden van WZC Ter Meeren, WZC Keyhof en Ganspoel op post om de bewoners zo goed mogelijk op te vangen samen met de vrijwilligers. Laat ons ook de huisartsen niet vergeten: zij houden dag in dag uit de vinger aan de pols van onze bevolking. De wisselwerking tussen de medici en paramedici en het lokaal bestuur liep bovendien gesmeerd. Ook het personeel van de thuiszorgdiensten én de thuisverplegers zetten hun werk voort om de mensen thuis te voorzien van de nodige verzorging en begeleiding. Rescatan un pequeño Gato Montés tras caer en una trampa metálica Ocurrió en Aluminé donde los guardafaunas neuquinos lograron recuperarlo de su estado crítico de salud. Recuerdan que los carnívoros silvestres nos ofrecen servicios ecológicos al controlar las poblaciones de roedores, conejos y liebres. Aluminé es noticia nuevamente por el rescate de un joven gato montés (Leopardus geoffroyi) que quedó atrapado en trampas metálicas. Una vez más la comunidad demuestra la gran red de personas que piensan la atención y contención de la fauna silvestre. En estos contextos se renueva una pregunta muy recurrente por estos lares ¿Somos capaces como seres humanos de compartir el territorio con otras especies? El animal fue víctima de dos cepos que le produjeron graves heridas al prenderse uno en cada pata trasera. Esto sumado al cuadro de hipotermia generado por las bajas temperaturas y las horas que permaneció inmóvil en la nieve, le generó un estado crítico de salud. El pasado jueves 9 de julio, una vecina del paraje de Abra Ancha avisó al equipo de Guardafaunas que había encontrado un Gato Montés atrapado en dos trampas que ella había ubicado para capturar a un ejemplar de Visón Americano, mamífero exótico que también visita gallineros. Sin embargo el hallazgo fue otro, el felino correspondía a un macho joven muy delgado que debe haberse visto forzado a acercarse a asentamientos humanos para buscar comida. Según comentó la vecina, el mismo Gato Montés ya le había atrapado gallinas antes. Ante el aviso se hizo presente Martín Salazar, de la Dirección Provincial de Fauna, la veterinaria de la Reserva Natural Urbana Quilquelil, Carolina Marull, que cuenta con una vasta experiencia en manejo de fauna silvestre y el Director del Museo municipal El Charrúa, Titi Ricciuto, siempre disponible para estos desafíos Se encontró al Gato Montés con graves heridas en sus dos patas traseras y en estado de hipotermia. Fue sedado y medicado en el mismo gallinero usando instrumental y medicamentos provistos por la veterinaria Gilda Vallejos. Luego fue trasladado a la casa de Titi, la cual ya ha sido refugio de animales silvestres para rehabilitarlo y devolverlo a su hábitat - @laangosturadigital on Instagram

“Paul Nutter a Marine 1st, Vietnam vet, (I believe he told me) 22 missions as a tunnel rat in Nam. Participated in the Battle for Hué City, and the Tet offensive. Then a firefighter paramedic/EMT in North Barberton, Ohio. When I met Paul in 1998 he was HM2 Nutter better known as Chico or Pappy. A Navy Reserve corpsman for the 3/25 Marines out of Brookpark, Ohio. Deployed with the unit to the Haditha Dam, Iraq in 2005. Here Pappy (left) is consoling an Iraqi soldier who had just lost his brother. Pappy used to shave his head bald, but was told to let it grow because of the respect he commanded from the Iraqi soldiers and locals, they looked to him as a grandfather figure. More to come Pappy... Sorry I had to leave for work. Pap Nutter you are standing at the departure point for your next deployment. Durante la jornada realizamos además un encuentro de trabajo junto al @minfrapba, el municipio y la empresa Gades, en el que pusimos en común los avances en los relevamientos de los artefactos de gas de las viviendas, y llevamos a cabo la fiscalización de las obras reactivadas en el distrito, que comprenden: mejoramiento habitacional y de la infraestructura de servicios, puesta en valor de la plaza central y la cancha Villegas y readecuación de gas en el barrio Presidente Sarmiento. Asimismo, en el barrio Carlos Gardel se está planificando la terminación de viviendas y la construcción de espacios públicos. Estas obras forman parte del proyecto integral de urbanización de los barrios, que beneficiará en forma directa a más de 2.000 familias. De las actividades participaron, por parte del OPISU, la Directora Provincial de Integración Urbana, Soledad del Cueto junto al inspector de obras de infraestructura y funcionarios de la gestión municipal. 🍎 BACK TO SCHOOL UPDATE • Today (Monday, September 14th) is the first day “Back to School” for the 2020-2021 school year, but things are very different than any other Fall in recent memory. At the MLK, were adapting to the changing needs of families & students as we cope with the Coronavirus, as a community. • 📚 Preschool: 9 children graduated from the MLK Community Centers preschool this past week & are off to Kindergarten. Full day preschool continues, as it does year-round, for children ages 3-5. Space is available in the 3 year-old classroom. • 💻 Full Day Distance Learning Academy launches: Due to the States phased recommendations for school reopening, students at Pell & Thompson are not in class 5 days a week. Under this hybrid learning plan, the MLK is meeting working families needs by launching our school-aged Distance Learning Academy Mon-Fri, 8 am – 4 pm for the first 3 weeks of the school year. • 💻 MLK teachers will provide onsite instructional support to help students work remotely, & enriching activities like cooking & yoga to enhance the learning day. In a normal year, our Extended Learning Time programming is for children K - grade 4. The 2nd image is from one of several letters kids in our Summer Camp wrote asking to stay another year. 💻 Almost all parents with children enrolled at the MLK work jobs that cannot be performed remotely, meaning childcare & distance learning help is critically important. Under the new Back to School plan, students rotate with some days in school, & some days here at the MLK. Despite being a full-day program including breakfast, lunch, & snack, we are holding tuition for the Distance Learning Academy to only $85/week, standard rate for our After School programming. Yesterday was my favorite day since we began curfew in Iraq 10 days ago. By the end of the day I was sopping wet and sore from lifting heavy bags of food. But I couldn’t stop smiling because a whole camp full of friends now had the food and security they needed to stay at least one more week in quarantine. And it was only possible because of a whole community of friends half a world away jumping in to help. As I walked passed a friend (from a different NGO there supporting the hospital) on the road, he asked “where did you guys get all the food? Was it in storage some where? Did you have it shipped in?” I answered that we bought it the day before from the city and spent all that day packing and preparing the food bags to be handed out today. He asked surprised, “how did you get the funds so quickly?” I responded that friends around the world gave in their time in need to help others in need. What an amazing life we get to live! One where we can care for our families and care for others at the same time. The best part of the day was two sweet sisters who insisted on hauling the heavy bag inside then peeking inside the bag, squealed with sweet smiles “birinj!” I hope you are finding something to smile about today too. I find being a helper when things are scary and unknown always lifts my spirits. Die Aktion „Saubere Landschaft“ ist eine Umweltkampagne des Landkreises Darmstadt-Dieburg, die das Bewusstsein und das Verantwortungsgefühl der Bürgerinnen und Bürger gegen die Vermüllung öffentlicher Plätze in ihren Kommunen stärkt und die dieses Jahr bereits ihr 17-jähriges Jubiläum feiert. Die Einführung des Dosen- und Flaschenpfandes hat zwar bewirkt, dass nicht mehr so viele Flaschen im Straßengraben herumliegen, aber dafür nimmt die Menge an achtlos weggeworfenen Pappbechern und Imbissverpackungen zu. Durch regelmäßige Müllsammelaktionen erleben viele Menschen das Problem des „Wilden Mülls“ hautnah und nur wer schon einmal den ganzen Müll aus den Straßengräben herausgesammelt hat, weiß welch mühsame Arbeit dies ist. Mittlerweile ist es schon Tradition, dass am letzten Samstag im September diese kreisweite Müllsammelaktion stattfindet, zu der viele Städte und Gemeinden im Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg, so auch Groß-Bieberau, zum „Herbstputz“ einladen. So kam es, dass sich bei trübem Herbstwetter am Samstagmorgen um kurz nach 08:30 Uhr eine motivierte Gruppe von ca. 25 Freiwilligen am Sportplatz in Groß-Bieberau traf und mit Greifzangen, Handschuhen und Müllbeuteln ausgestattet den Kampf gegen den wilden Müll aufnahm. Müll in Hecken, am Bachrand und Straßengräben sieht nicht nur unschön aus, sondern kostet auch immens mehr Geld als eine ordnungsgemäße Entsorgung. Eine saubere Stadt und eine müllfreie Landschaft sind für die meisten Menschen ein wichtiges Stück Lebensqualität. Wo es sauber ist, da fühlen wir uns wohl. Die Kampagne Saubere Landschaft im Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg möchte dabei das Bewusstsein für unsere Umwelt schärfen. Nach getaner Arbeit lud Bürgermeisterin Anja Vogt zu einer gemütlichen Rast ein und für alle emsigen Müllsammler gab es auch noch ein kleines Dankeschön. Wir bedanken uns bei allen fleißigen Helfern! This is most of our team saying goodbye to our Warehouse. We now have learned that the fire has damaged the structural integrity of the building so much that it has to be removed completely. We still dont know how much our landlords building insurance will cover and to what extent other insurance companies will cover other damges. The whole thing is turning out to be a very slow process in times of corona and short-term work. However, we know that we are only saying goodbye to the building here and not to the idea of IPSE, which is carried by our team.
