Every Wind ~ 1907 ~ Roland (Royal Jr.) W. Reed (June 22, 1864 – December 14, 1934), an American artist and photographer, was part of an early 20th century group of photographers of Native Americans known as pictorialists. Part artist and part scientist, they endeavored to have their re-creations reflect not only the highest artistic value, but unquestioned ethnological accuracy as well. Untitled, London England, 1966⠀ Gordon Parks⠀ ⠀ Edition 5 of 10 Our recently acquired piece by Gordon Parks features his intimate and nuanced portrait of the legendary athlete and human rights advocate Muhammad Ali. Receiving unprecedented access to the champion, Gordon Parks photographed and profiled Ali twice for Life magazine. Parks met Ali during his training in Miami, before flying to London to document the run up to his fight against Henry Cooper. Upon meeting Ali in Florida in 1966, Parks wrote in Life: I felt free to tell him quite directly that I had come to Miami to see whether he was really as obnoxious as people were making him out to be. Ali replied: “No need to beat about the bush, brother.. Detail of a 1922 portrait of Elsie Altmann-Loos by the very great photographer Dora Kallmus – later known as Madame DOra – who was born in Vienna in 1881 to a family of Jewish lawyers. In the words of art historian Lisa Silverman: Madame d’Ora’s vibrant portraits of 20th-century artists and intellectuals remain important testaments to European cultural life at the turn of the century and beyond. Her studios in Vienna and Paris became fashionable meeting places for the cultural and intellectual elite. D’Ora’s achievements also paved the way for other European women’s careers in photography [...] She was one of the first photographers to focus on the emerging areas of modern dance and fashion, particularly after 1920, when fashion photographs started to replace drawings in magazines. In 1907, in Vienna, she was one of the first women to open a photographic studio; in 1925, she also opened one in Paris, and became the pre-eminent fashion photographer and portraitist of the day: her subjects included Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel, Gustav Klimt, Tamara de Lempicka, Colette and Picasso, et al. She was also a writer, penning short essays to accompany her photos. When the Germans invaded France she was hidden by nuns in a convent; despite the fact that she had converted to Catholicism, she was still in great danger. Many of her family were murdered in the Holocaust, including her sister Anna. After the war, Dora focussed on recording the plight of refugees. In 1956, at the age of 75, she photographed the horror of Paris slaughterhouses. In 1959, she was hit by a motorcycle, lost much of her memory and was unable to work. She spent her remaining years in Austria, in the family house that had been forcibly sold under the Nazis but was later repatriated. She died on 28 October 1963. Her photographs are now in the collections of many great museums. In 2018, a major exhibition of her work was held in Vienna @leopold_museum - it was aptly titled ‘Make Me Look Beautiful, Madame D’Ora!’ The @neuegalerieny exhibition devoted to Madame D’Ora runs until January 2021.
