Why is the sign spelled Peches?? Anthony and Cindi Jenkins are the fourth generation to own the Peches fruit stand. Anthony’s brother painted it and it started getting a lot of attention. Realizing the mistake, they repainted the sign with the correct spelling. But the Peches sign had caught a lot of attention so that gave the family a great marketing idea -- the fruit stand would be called Peches. Peches has become a favorite spot for travelers to take photos! I spent the first 18 years of my life in Pike Road, Alabama, and I’ve passed this tiny shack right by my family’s property thousands of times. It reminds me of one of my favorite photos from Utah that now sits as my phone’s wallpaper. One day last year I was visiting home, and a group of foreign exchange students drove down my driveway. I wasn’t sure what they wanted, so my mother and I went out to inquire of them. They hopped out of the car, heads turned up to the trees that filled the space above our heads, as if they’d never seen a tree before. We asked how they were and if they needed help with something. We welcomed them of course, but were primarily just intrigued at why they were in our driveway. They went on to say that they were from China and had never seen anywhere as beautiful as our property, and that if we would allow it, they would simply like to walk around our land. I was shocked. Surely this was some type of joke. I’ve spent the past 4 years traveling the world because I wanted to see something beautiful. These curious students were trying to tell me that the place I spent my entire childhood was the most magnificent place they had ever seen, and they traveled across the world to get here? Not possible. Apparently, it was no joke. They continued for the next half hour to walk the perimeter of my upbringing, taking photos of my mundane, mouths half open, eyes glowing. Wonder. Awe. Thankfulness. This is a glorious reminder that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It doesn’t take a flight to Europe to cultivate a heart of wonder, and today is good a day as ever to be amazed. From the transit camp Westerbork located in The Netherlands, in cattle trainwagons such as this one, approx 97.776 innocent people were transported to German extermination camps such as Auschwitz, Sobibor (in Poland) and the Theresienstadt ghetto (occupied Czechoslovakia) and Bergen-Belsen in Germany. On arrival more then 80% was murdered instantly just because they were ‘different’. It is estimated that around 3.000.000 people were killed in extermination camps alone. With racial issues acting up all around the world, look at our past and learn from it. We have to take a stand in order for such atrocities to never happen again.
