I’m the biggest believer in putting in the time and effort to get to know yourself; to learn to enjoy your own company first and foremost, and to develop self-soothing mechanisms wherein you feel grounded and fulfilled on your own. But you know what? It’s also OK for humans to need each other. A pervasive mentality has developed where toxic individualism has been packaged up as empowerment and sold as feminism. There are extremely important conversations we can have about choosing ourselves, boundaries and knowing our worth without labelling other human beings as inherently ‘toxic’ and touting an extremely privileged view that we’re better off alone. People are not toxic. But their behaviours, which stem from their own trauma, can be toxic. And while none of us are responsible for helping others heal, and there should never EVER be an expectation on people of marginalised genders to expend unnecessary emotional labour or sacrifice their own wellbeing in the process, we CAN aim for mutual understanding and growth. Viewing relationships as transactional is an inherently colonial mindset, and one where privileged members of society forget that less privileged individuals, systemically forgotten and exploited, often need each other to survive. They need community, mutual aid, generosity. Humans are extremely social animals; we evolved social groups and structures in order to help us survive. Studies have shown that people who feel lonelier have higher levels of the stress hormone, cortisol (Steptoe et al., 2004), and that having fewer social ties is associated with more heart disease, cancer, and impaired immune function (Umberson and Montez, 2010). It’s not empowering to teach each other that we must cut people out of our lives at the first sign of weakness or unhealed trauma. We need to remember that, as long as our connections stem from mutual respect and love, it’s OK to need each other. In fact, it can be healthy and radical in the face of capitalism. 3K SPECIAL • *long caption incoming* Yea I’m super late with this, but who cares🤣. I spent soooo many hours on this, and it was worth it! I wanted to make something HUGE for the 3k special cause that was one of my dreams ever since I joined the community, and I think I achieved my goal since this drawing is enormous. I already said that a lot, but I will say it again. Thank y’all so much for 3K. This is an amazing community to share my art with, and I’m just happy I am a part of it. Okay, back to the drawing. Idk if I should color it or just leave it like this, but I will probably make a poll today asking if I should color it or not. I tried to make the doodles really detailed and actually added a couple of illustrations in this. There’s an illustrated AF1, a windmill and a lot more. Herma I wanted to do my own take on Herma statues from Greek and subsequent Roman infrastructures. They were traditionally carved with a head and possibly a torso. They typically depicted the god Hermes, hence the term Herma which is also a play on words in Greek. Hermes shared an etymological connection with the Greek word ἕρματα (blocks of stone) The statues were thought to ward off harm or evil, an apotropaic function, and were placed at crossings, country borders and boundaries as protection, in front of temples, near to tombs, outside houses, in the gymnasia, palaestrae, libraries, porticoes, and public places, at the corners of streets, on high roads as sign-posts, with distances inscribed upon them. I thought this would be a fun approach, to create my own version of Hermas. Today on #MentalMondays we wanted to talk about a new yet ancient study known as Ecopsychology. A growing body of research points to the beneficial effects that exposure to the natural world has on health, reducing stress and promoting healing. Now, policymakers, employers, and healthcare providers are increasingly considering the human need for nature in how they plan and operate. It takes precisely 2 hours in nature for a persons sense of well being to improve drastically. This can be split up throughout the week but please take at- least two hours out of your week to go outside. You can get active or not. It is still very beneficial to your health to do so. To take it even further plan a camping trip this fall. Tents are surprisingly inexpensive and you only have to buy them once along with many of the essentials you need to have a successful camping trip.
