I’ve been thinking a lot about war paint recently. pt.1 of 3 Today I was called out by a wildly fantastic sister of mine because I was self chastising for not being productive in my work as I balanced a bad flare up of my health conditions. She literally burst out laughing and said “Did you HEAR how COLONIZED that thing you just said was??!!” And damn. She was right. So let’s have a chat about chronic pain. About invisible conditions that impact so many but are often invalidated and not diagnosed because they are not as visible (or maybe inconvenient to others??) as other diseases can be. Usually I say quietly to a loved one “Oh sorry, I’m having a bad body day.” But my body isn’t bad. And it’s not just one day. I have struggled for about 6ish years now with what has just recently been maybe a little diagnosed as a chronic pain condition, with lots of whole body systemic impacts, with no cure and few treatments that don’t include intense I’ve hormone therapy or repeated surgeries. I’ve been told by a number of doctors that my pain is in my head, that there’s absolutely nothing to do, that I should just lose weight and feel better. That I pay too much attention to my body. Let’s be clear. I’d say 3 out of 4 days I am experiencing moderate to severe physical discomfort. Yes, I am tough as hell and extremely active and push myself to grow and be well in many ways. But that means I feel “normal” (without weird symptoms of bloating, distention, aches, stabby taser pain, dull throbby pain) maybe one week of the month. Three months of the year. You get the idea. I am highly functioning, and also highly skilled at hiding my experience, like many are. The pain bias: dozens of studies have shown that women’s self reporting of pain is taken less seriously than men. women in emergency departments are more likely to be underserved, given fewer painkillers, or made to wait longer to receive pain killers than men. women are more likely to be hold their pain experiences are hypochondria (made up) or psychiatric (mental health/stress related) than men, and this dismissal particularly occurs when female patients are seen by male doctors. pt 2 coming at ya soon 🍦 - @frompeaksnpinetrees on Instagram
