A government building once called a 12-storey middle finger directed at the legislature will be torn down after decades of deterioration. Alberta Infrastructure Minister Prasad Panda said the Legislature Annex building is in such bad shape it would cost $29 million to fix — about half the building’s assessed value. It costs $750,000 per year to maintain, even though only 300 government workers normally occupy only a few floors. “It’s not the looks of it — it’s the fitness of the building and the safety concerns and safety hazards for the occupants. It served us well, but now it’s past its time,” Panda said Wednesday. At least 30 windows in the building are cracked, the building leaks, sometimes leading to wet plaster falling from the ceiling, and it needs extensive plumbing and ventilation repairs. Decommissioning will begin this fall, with hazards like asbestos and lead paint being mitigated first, and demolition will start in 2021. Originally built to house Alberta Government Telephones, the building has also housed opposition MLAs, government backbenchers, and departmental staff. One politician reportedly called it an “architectural monstrosity” when it opened in 1953. Link in bio. MDBF Clarksdale Edition 2020 19, 20 & 21 de Novembro Caxias do Sul - RS - Brasil Os Blues Fans que acompanharam todas ou a grande maioria das edições do MDBF sabem que o evento nunca foi estagnado num formato engessado e específico. Mesmo com experiencias satisfatórias e o sucesso maior de algumas edições, ousamos a cada nova temática assumindo os riscos do desafio. Nos últimos anos inclusive cogitamos a hipótese de tirar o MDBF da Estação Férrea de Caxias do Sul, mas consideramos o fato do Mississippi Delta Blues Bar ser o mentor do evento e o grande responsável pelas jams das madrugadas, desistindo assim de mudanças tão radicais. Porém hoje nos encontramos num momento em que podemos nos permitir estas novas alternativas. O bar localizado por mais de treze anos no Largo da Estação se deu por vencido pela badernas e fiscalizações constantes, buscando espaço num novo projeto gastronômico a ser iniciado nas réplicas do Parque da Festa da Uva ainda este ano. I hate retouching photos. Like I really dislike it. My goal any time Im taking a photo is to do it well enough that it needs minimal editing. Thats always my mindset going into taking photos. Even if Im just out walking around snapping shots on my phone. I dont like using filters or any of that. At least thats how I usually am. Recently, Ive been exploring more with editing my photos, especially my landscape photographs. Im not trying to do anything too crazy or make it look unrealistic, but rather trying to accentuate the beauty that is already there. This photo of the Doulton Fountain in Glasgow is one that I never planned on sharing. I didnt think it was good enough to share. You cant see the detail in this amazing five-tier fountain and the sky was bluer than it is in the photo. Overall, I felt like it just wasnt how I saw it when I took the photo so I wasnt going to share it. However, Ive started going back through a lot of my photos and am starting to play around with editing and enhancing colors and really trying to share how I see things when I take the photo. Swipe over to see the edited version of the fountain so you can experience it through my eyes. Is it perfect, no. But its what I see when I remember visiting this amazing fountain for the first time. Last week over 50 people came together to successfully block an illegal eviction in Chillum, Maryland. The landlord saw the solidarity he was up against and fled—but across the region, landlords are becoming emboldened to kick people out of their homes. Weve since heard from a tenant in Mount Rainier, whose landlord is threatening to come illegally lock him and at least one neighbor out of their apartment on Monday afternoon at 3 PM. To say that we are proud of these dancers would be an understatement. Yesterday these kids went into their first competition of the 19/20 season. For some of these dancers it was their first solo ever and they were required to perform under new health and safety protocols with no help from their parents inside before they danced or while they had costume changes. It was definitely a bit overwhelming for some of our younger dancers but they went out on that stage performed from their hearts and showed us their love of dance. Change is always difficult at first but now that they’ve done it once their next competition this summer will seem much easier. These kids have not had regular classes since spring break, they came back to the studio in June for a modified schedule and 6 weeks later got out on that stage to compete! It may not be how we ever imagined our season to go but it is a step in the right direction and brings us so much hope to seeing more dancers getting to hit the stage in the fall. This time last week, the sun broke through the clouds long enough to shine some serious recognition and joy on the recent graduates of our English program. Representing 19+ different countries from all around the world, these English Language Learners have dedicated themselves to learning English. Just as we started a new term of classes with these students this spring, Covid-19 hit, and we were forced to move all of our classes online. For some of our students, this was the first time using a computer, much less using a video conferencing platform like Zoom! They amaze us. They inspire us. Norway. Olav or Olaf (Olav, the Norwegians pronounce Olaf), the king of Norway from 1015 to 1028, is primarily known for planting Christianity, and he did this by far from peaceful methods. This provoked the discontent of the leaders, who, calling on the help of Cnut the Great, King of Denmark and England, and defeated Olafs army at the Battle of the Heleo River in 1028. The king fled to Russia, where he found refuge in Novgorod at the court of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. After a year, he decided to return and try to recapture the kingdom. Olaf was killed on July 29, 1030 in a battle with a Norwegian peasant militia and a Danish army at Stiklestad. The kings body was buried on the banks of the Nidelva River, near Nidaros (now Trondheim). After miracles began to happen near Olafs tomb, he was canonized (1032). In 1164, Pope Alexander III officially canonized Olav. Olav became Norways national hero and patron saint. Around 1070, over the grave of St. Olaf, on the site of a wooden chapel built in the 1030s, the construction of a stone church began, which was completed 20 years later. Olafs tomb became an altar and an object of mass pilgrimage. This contributed to the development of the city, and in 1153 Nidaros became the seat of the bishop. In 1183 Bishop Øystein visited England, where he was impressed by the grandeur and richness of the architecture of religious buildings. Returning to Trondheim, he initiated the construction of the magnificent Anglo-Romanesque church, which was completed around 1300. 💥 Московская акватория 2020 ⠀ Вчера на Водоотводном канале в центре Москвы прошло очередное SUP-мероприятие, которое собрало любителей и профессионалов. ⠀ 🌤 По оценкам организаторов было заявлено около 1000 участников, на воду вышло порядка 400 любителей доски с веслом. С уверенностью можно сказать, что все, кто испугался утреннего дождя, пропустил знаковое мероприятие! ⠀ В рамках #акватория прошел первый в Москве SUP-карнавал, гонки для любителей и профиков. Sometimes life comes full circle! Lassi & Spice was recently invited to pop up at a US Bank event right in front of Starbucks HQ! Our owner @susannahdham worked in that building for 8 years prior to opening Lassi & Spice, and her banker Mark (pictured bottom right ) was one of the first people Susannah told she was thinking about starting a business. In fact, Mark helped Lassi & Spice become officially official when he opened our business checking account. So it was so exciting to be invited back to the neighborhood, this time proudly sharing our own brand and our food with the community.
