Working through my “to do” books. In lieu of any football this scratched an itch. Nick Hornby is one of my favourite authors. He has such a way of encapsulating autobiography within a topical framework. This example uses chronological football matches to tell his story with his usual existential observation and social commentary. It’s also fascinating to see how he saw the game evolve from 69-92 - calling out the influx of money into the game and how it began to alienate the working class. Genuinely interesting read. This is amazing for so many reasons. It helps me step away from production and focus more on creation, management, and art. Slow mornings…as everything has been opening up and our schedule is again becoming busy…I’ve been craving the slow again. Especially in our mornings, I feel like mornings are the craziest and I’ve been longing to slow them down. To create a rhythm of stillness and morning that flows smoothly…well as much as I can with 5 kiddos under the age of 8 ;) So this week I’ve really been focused on what that looks like. For me, it’s meant waking up at 5am to give in the morning to have stillness and quiet with the Lord. To be able to start slow before the demands become great and sounds are very loud. Which has in turn giving us more time to go for walks in the morning after breakfast, getting all those wiggles out before we start school. And continues to show me what truly is important, and what can wait. Next week, I’m focusing on on mid-mornings/afternoons. What rhymes and routine do we need in this season of life to breed rest, less distractions, and enjoying each day we have, instead of just trying to survive them? Anyone else feeling the same way? A beautiful pop of colour for a sunny morning! ‘Queenie’ was really good read. Difficult at times, but overall a brilliantly written story about a unique and brave central character. I also found it reaffirmed my belief that girls (and women) need to be able to read about characters who represent them, their heritage, their culture and their skin colour. The references in this book to immigration, hair care, stereotypes were all challenging, and a reminder that many, many books out there reflect my own background, and not the background of those around me. Link in bio and stories of my latest @forbes piece! A new initiative @trustuscotton aims to make America’s $7 billion Big Cotton industry more sustainable. Is it greenwashing or on the path to driving real change? For decades, organic cotton was viewed as the gold standard for sustainable cotton initiatives but widespread adoption of conventional farming methods have changed the conversation. I’m glad to see more detail and data about US conventional cotton’s environmental impact. For example, despite the notion that all cotton is water thirsty, irrigated water usage has declined dramatically for American cotton farmers since the 1980s thanks to better technology. 👖 This underlines what I found in my @anothertomorrow story on cotton, which is that if farming conditions vary from field to field and country to country, why do we keep talking about cotton in terms of global industry averages? It’s bound to be inaccurate. We either need better regional and national data or TALK TO FARMERS MORE. Im about done with my garden. The papers are mostly picked. The tomatoes are dwindling. The nights are colder and the threat of frost is more near with each cold night. I secretly hope this winter is bitter. Frozen. Months long. Not just on the calendar, but frozen for months. Because some may not know or remember when the cold hits (i get it....i want the suns warmth too!) Is that in order to kill back bugs and viruses, frozen temps must be consistent for a certain amount of time. And after a year of.... well after the year we have all been along for the ride, I think it would be fabulous to start next spring, bug free. And maybe even a few less Hornworms. Try as I may, they still are a real presence in my garden. Thank goodness for little boys who love to pick them and toss them the the hens. This weekend Ill start destroying the garden. It’s high summer on the farm, the fields are bursting. After months of uncertainty of how we would sell all our produce, things are coming together. Farmers Markets are both a highlight and a lowlight to be honest. Seeing our customers each week is a delight and I have tears in my eyes looking across the market, seeing people wait in line to get into the market, rain or shine. It’s that dedication that keeps our spirits up. Markets are down (a lot!) but it was anticipated. Our CSA members are eating their way through the season (tomato time right now!) and we are so grateful to have so many new and returning members put their trust in us this season. We expanded our CSA this year and it is so relieving to have that weekly outlet and awesome community to boot. Thank you 💚 Our farmstand has also been a shining star. For all who come out, across that one lane wooden bridge, for your shop, thank you for making the drive. Motivational Monday: I dont know who needed to hear this. 11 years ago on this exact date, my brother @darren.anthony____ (apparently he’s my 6”3 ”twin” )was featured on the cover of Now Magazine we made history. I was producing his first play, Secrets of a Black boy. After the success of his play we thought a major tv deal should come but it didnt... 11 years later, we are now the first brother and sister team to have three shows in development at @cbc. Before our deals happened we both faced tons of rejection. But we would always give each other pep talks and send each other motivational books and videos. We had the audacity to believe in our dreams. So remember as you are watching everyone’s highlight reel on the gram, just know no one is posting their failures... It takes time... (hopefully not 11 years 😂🤣🙋🏾‍♀️) It takes rejection, it takes starting over, but you must never give up! The universe has a plan for you. Seguimos hablando de este arbolito que les presentamos ayer. La Olla de Mono produce unos frutos muy particulares que a simple vista se ven bastante sabrosos. Técnicamente reciben el nombre de “pixidios” y se ven como unas ollitas leñosas que incluso traen una tapa especial a su medida que se desprende cuando las semillas están listas para su dispersión, ¡así es la sabiduría de la naturaleza! Cada fruto trae en promedio 10 semillas. Su nuez, que es muy apetecida, tiene elevadas concentraciones de selenio, un oligoelemento que nuestro cuerpo necesita en pequeñas cantidades, ¿quién lo creería? Lo que sí es cierto, es que cuando se mira la imagen, es imposible que no se te haga agua la boca. La Olla de Mono, tiene una pariente que es mucho más conocida, la famosa Nuez del Brasil (Bertholletia excelsa) que es otra especie de la misma familia. Y aunque la Olla de Mono se ve inofensiva, CUIDADO, porque está demostrado que el consumo directo y/o excesivo de estas semillas puede ocasionar pérdida de cabello y uñas, náuseas, diarrea… e incluso, en casos extremos, hasta la muerte. Pero entonces, ¿qué podemos hacer con esta especie? Su aprovechamiento consiste en recolectar las nueces, procesarlas para extraer el aceite rico en selenio, reconocido por sus propiedades antioxidantes, e incorporarlo en productos cosméticos o productos alimenticios de consumo animal.
