The other wrestlers ran away. Kamsa was unable to bear this. He stops the trumpets and drums. He shouts Kick the ill-behaved boys out of town!! Capture Nanda and tie him up! Let Vasudeva and my father Ugrasena, who are in the enemy camp be killed immediately!! He drew his sword and prepares to fight. Krishna gets angry. Even while Balarama tackled the other guards who came up against them, Krishna sprang up like an eagle and climbed to the top where Kamsa was seated. French artist Georges Lacombe’s “Autumn: The Chestnut Gatherers” (1894) celebrates seasonal change, with a fiery palette that evokes the harvest in a decorative, wooded landscape. The women’s stylized poses and provincial costumes present the scene as timeless and dreamlike, rather than reflective of the realities of peasant life. Autumn is one of an unfinished series of four paintings that depict the seasons. “I dont have many regrets in life but my one greatest regret in life is not having my grandfather live long enough to see my family and I. Had he just lived a few more years, I wouldve been able to help him get the best medical treatment. Back then, I was just a 14 year old girl in the village when he died from a disease that couldve been easily treated. I was in no position to help him but cried for months and months to the heavens. What was one of the fondest memories of your grandfather? My grandfather, my fathers father, was a great chief in the village. He had many children and many grand children. He was a noble and generous man. He was also the village magistrate for village court cases. For his work, he was paid by the local council about K100 ($44) per month. On his paid day, family would get around him but he would secretly look for me and slip into my tiny fingers a K20 ($9). That was so much money back then. My grandfather and I had a very special bond, I was very close to his heart. Every night as a little girl, I would trick my parents and run off to his hut. Inside his hut was his bed, a filthy worn out mattress. Γυναίκες στείρες που αναζητούν τη γονιμότητα στα ιαματικά νερά, ο ιδιόρρυθμος γιατρός με το δικό του σχέδιο ευγονικής, ο βαθιά θεολογημένος και φιλόσοφος των ηδονών του βίου Αμερικανός ασθενής, ο πρώην πολιτικός κρατούμενος που εγκαταλείπει τη χώρα του ανακαλύπτοντας πως δεν την είχε τελικά γνωρίσει ούτε καν ζήσει, ο διάσημος τρομπετίστας και η όμορφη νοσοκόμα με τ αχυρόχρωμα μαλλιά στροβιλίζονται σ ένα αποχαιρετιστήριο βαλς, οδηγημένοι από την απαράμιλλη χορογραφία του Κούντερα. Σ ένα μαύρο βοντβίλ σε πέντε πράξεις, μια κωμωδία φαινομενικά ανάλαφρη, γεμάτη εξαιρετικές συμπτώσεις και ριζικές ανατροπές, τονισμένη με μαύρο χιούμορ κι ακόμα πιο πικρό σαρκασμό, με υπερβολές που αναδεικνύουν την γκροτέσκα πλευρά του τραγικού, οι ήρωες του Βαλς αποχαιρετούν μια εποχή. Με το Βαλς του αποχαιρετισμού αποχαιρέτησε και ο Κούντερα τη χώρα του, καθώς ήταν το τελευταίο έργο που έγραψε εκεί προτού εγκατασταθεί στη Γαλλία, με την πρόθεση μάλιστα να είναι το τελευταίο του μυθιστόρημα. • CONNECT • (06/10) Toi aussi, tu rêves de tout quitter pour partir voyager ? Même en cette période difficile, rien ne nous empêche de rêver, de se projeter dans le futur et de travailler sur la concrétisation de nos rêves les plus fous. Pour cette deuxième édition, nous avons l’honneur d’accueillir 2 orateurs: Jonathan Kubben Quiñonez, fondateur du mouvement @momimfine, influenceur primé, qui a tout quitté pour partir voyager en 2016, et qui depuis, développe des projets humanitaires et inspire des milliers de personnes à travers le monde, à oser réaliser leurs rêves via son compte Instagram (300K followers). Notre deuxième oratrice est @ambre_telle, une voyageuse passionnée qui na pas peur de découvrir le monde seule en tant que femme et qui a déniché de nombreux jobs et expériences de volontariat extraordinaires à travers le monde durant ses nombreux périples. Did you know the Picture Collection files dinosaurs under “Extinct fauna-- reptiles”? After serving a myriad of patrons for over 100 years, Picture Collection librarians have developed their own naming conventions to help researchers find exactly what they need. Other examples of this include caskets and knives (“coffins” and “cutlery”, respectively)! This week, Jay looks at a dinosaur clipping from a children’s book by Vincent Price from 1981. “This small, mostly gray illustration may not seem spectacular or even very interesting -- until you look at it more closely. These are supposed to be dinosaurs fighting to the death, yet look at their odd, almost languid, poses. The predator, an Allosaurus, seems to be standing on tiptoe to reach the Brontosaurus neck. But the reach was worth the effort, because hes biting into it the way you might do with an ear of corn or a stalk of celery. Snap! Crunch! Delicious! Meanwhile, the Brontosaurus almost seems to be philosophically accepting its fate, closing its eyes and leaning back into its killers teeth. You can almost imagine it saying Oh, bother! I guess my time has come to die. Alas, I perish! Now, even if this picture originally came from a childrens book (its included in a book by Vincent Price (!) about monsters in general), it is supposed to be an earth-shaking battle between prehistoric giants. The almost apologetic delicacy with which the carnivore is nibbling the herbivore makes this one of my favorite dinosaur images. “Malinche III” mixed media on canvas, 30x40” private collection (Thank you @arthaussanfrancisco*.) Today is Mexican Independence Day. Malinche (AKA Marina, Malintzin,) is one of the characters I love to paint, a complex figure in Mexican History (Nahua, 1500-1529,) she played a key role in the Spanish “conquest” of the Aztec Empire, acting as an interpreter (she spoke several languages,) advisor, and intermediary for the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. She was one of many enslaved women “given” to the Spaniards by the natives of Tabasco in 1519, she gave birth to Cortéss first son, Martín, who is considered one of the first Mestizos (people of mixed European and indigenous American ancestry). The historical figure of Marina has been intermixed with Aztec legends (such as that of La Llorona, a ghost woman who weeps for her lost children). In Mexico today, La Malinche remains iconically potent, seen as a traitor by some, she is to me the embodiment of fierceness and survival. Day 170 Sheltering in Love. His most known work is „DMaus Kätti“ („The Mouse Katy“). This poem in verse form is based on the ancient Greek fable by Aesop about the field and city mice. Auguste Liesch’s famous Mouse Katy lives on a field in Burmerange. In this village one can also see a statue by Wil Lofy of their famous citizen after whom the Cultural Centre is also named. In front of the thermal baths in Mondorf-les-Bains is another statue, which tells a part of the story. It shows the city cats from, which Mouse Katy and her cousin Mim have to escape. PAUL BENCH TAKEOVER PART IV @paulbench Poster for ‘Querelle’, by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1982, based on ‘Querelle of Brest’, by Jean Genet, 1947. Querelle de Brest (1945-7) is a novel by Jean Genet, originally with illustrations by Jean Cocteau. It was also the basis of a film by Fassbinder (1982). Its protagonist is a French sailor, who is the object of multiple desires, sleeps with both men and women, is a theif and a murderer. Genet led a rootless lifestyle and spent time in prison, where significant portions of his works were written. He confronts the reader with Querelle’s dangerous (queer) sexuality, playing into cultural narratives that positioned queer men as threatening, deviant and suspicious in their contravention of bourgeois ideals, while simultaneously conferring power on a queer character and himself by his uncompromising language. The conjunction of butch masculinity, violence and queer sexuality also undercuts the common desexualising of queer men in cultural narratives. It also exposes the fluid sexual practices of some men who did not conform to broad public conceptions of homosexual men as effeminate and passive. Genet mobilised the pre-existing homoeroticism and fetishistic appeal of the sailor archetype/character/uniform to establish these themes of queer sexuality. Jean Cocteau knew Genet and illustrated initial publications of ‘Querelle of Brest’ which are as explicit as the text and exhibit Cocteau’s characteristic reduction of line.
