Since we are home-bound; A Massive TB to Korea 2018 ‘Twas supposed to be a basic conference/business trip, ended up surviving a small typhoon, shuffling between Soju hangovers & conference coffee, failed attempts at dieting, munching protein bars in the jungle, eating 4 meals at one setting, geeking out with scientists and enjoying the views... - The Golden Horse of Maoling. China, Han Dynasty, around 100 BC [1000x1100]

🎉 This time last year we acquired a significant treasure - the St Marys Figure of Christ. The 13th Century figurine was made in Limoges, France, which was the most well-known European centre for champlevé enamel production during this period. The date ties in with a major phase of rebuilding at St Mary’s Abbey (1271 – 1294) during which the remains that can still be viewed today were built. It might be presumed that this object was acquired to furnish this newly built and richly appointed building. Figurines like these were made to be mounted on an enamelled cross, now missing, which would have decorated a religious object such as a manuscript cover or a casket. Very few medieval objects, least of all from Limoges, have a known provenance linking them to a major English Abbey as few survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries of the 1530s. It was rediscovered in 1826, just before the Yorkshire Philosophical Society acquired the land to build the Yorkshire Museum. Prior to this the land was fallow land used for grazing. Were thrilled to have it back on the site of St Marys Abbey, here at the Yorkshire Museum. - @yorkshiremuseumandgardens on Instagram

- Statue of Avikala, Goddess of the Night, chief deity of my homebrew pantheon Massimiliano Haematinon Nigro (commissioned by me)

“My work reaches beyond one culture, but uses the references - clay, the vessel - as a means of finding out about myself and my womanhood - my humanity”. It is an important time for us all to learn about the rich histories of Africa. We are inspired by the work and research of African-British ceramicist Magdalene Odundo, to which we had the pleasure of publishing ‘The Journey of Things’, alongside the exhibition of the same name presented at The Hepworth Wakefield. Odundo’s interweaving of references to historical and contemporary making practices from different cultures, including her use of traditional African techniques, has led her to an exploration of her diasporic identity and the charged role that objects play in intercultural relationships. Featuring 44 of Odundo’s works alongside a large selection of museological and contemporary objects that reveal the wide range of global references that have informed her practice... Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Lucie Rie, Jean Arp, as well as ancient vessels from Greece and Egypt, historic ceramics from Africa, Asia and Central America, and ritual objects from across the African continent.
