Women in Mount Pleasant cautioned to stay alert after man approached female pedestrians after dark There have been at least three recent reports on social media, the most recent on Sept. 21, of a man in a silver vehicle pulling up to a woman walking alone after dark and attempting to get her to come near. A woman was walking her dog Sunday just before 1 p.m. near Main Street and East 1 Avenue when she noticed two men were following her. The men would stare at her and then look at their cell phones Then around 10:30 p.m. The man in the vehicle is described as white, in his late 20s to early 30s, with a slim build. The driver asked her if she’d use her cell phone to make a call for him. The woman declined and called the police as soon as she got home. Another women walking on Scotia Street near Broadway was approached around 10:30 p.m. by a man driving a silver four-door sedan. The VPD sex crimes unit is involved, Const. Tania Visintin said. On Wednesday July 15th at 11:34 AM the Morris Township Fire Dept. responded to reported Structure Fire on Sand Spring Rd. Engine 1 was the first arriving engine and found a light smoke condition. Former Hillside volunteers and current Township career Firefighters Matt Kaufhold and Dan Goss entered the structure to conduct a search for the family dog and source of the smoke. Upon entering the basement Firefighters Kaufhold and Goss discovered the fire to be in a utility room. They quickly removed the dog from the basement and delivered it to the family outside. Firefighters Jay Alderton and Tahj Valintine stretched a hose line to the basement and made quick work of the fire. Firefighters checked for extension on the 1st and 2nd floors. The fire was contained to the basement area. Mutual Aid from @fmbalocal43, @morrisplainsfire23 and Madison assisted on scene, @ironiafirecompany, @brookside_engine_co._1, @mounttaborfd and @new_vernon_fire_department filled the cover assignment while Morris Township operated at the Fire. - @hillsidehosecompany on Instagram

For years our forests have been extremely mismanaged. As of right now our skies along the entire west coast are dark brown and red. In Oregon Mt. Hood (pictured), Mt. Jefferson, and the Opal Creek Wilderness Area are burning. Opal creek in particular is an old growth forest with 500-1000 year old pine trees. Sacred relics of our state being destroyed resulting directly from years of not allowing controlled burns and responsible logging has created extremely fire prone forests. These forests not only are fire prone but due to large amounts of underbrush there is extended burning and burn damage. This is all across the west coast we are experiencing unprecedented wild fires. In Oregon even, 80% of all forest land destroyed by fire has been on federal land. Here is a new story Ive written about a railroad crossing at Water Street in Fairport. It has been out of commission for over sixty years, for good reason. Treacherous Railroad Crossing Closed in 1959 By Bill Poray, Perinton Town Historian Accidents at Fairport railroad crossings were far more common in the days prior to automatic signals and gates, activated when a train approaches the crossing. Over sixty years ago, a dangerous railroad crossing was eliminated in Fairport. Since the 1880s, the crossing allowed pedestrians, horse-drawn wagons and carriages, and later, cars and trucks, to pass over the railroad tracks at Water Street. The crossing, just north of Donnelley’s Public House, the old Green Tavern, was removed in August of 1959, and for a good reason. It was a menace to safety. At the time, there was much debate regarding the benefits of replacing railroad employees functioning as crossing guards with automatic gates. A 1957 traffic study recorded 86 trains - 47 passenger and 39 freight trains, passed through the village of Fairport in a 24-hour period. According to testimony at a hearing before the Public Service Commission in Albany in 1957, the maximum speed of trains passing through Fairport was recorded at “50 miles per hour for freight, and 80 miles per hour for main line passenger trains.” In the case of the Water Street crossing, 750 feet east of North Main Street, pedestrians and vehicle traffic were on their own. There was no crossing guard or gates of any kind. On a snowy day in February of 1941, a fast-moving eastbound train originating from Chicago approached the village of Fairport. Just seconds after crossing Main Street, it slammed into an automobile operated by Adrian Zonneville, traveling south on Water Street, killing the driver. A page-one report of the accident in the Fairport Herald-Mail stated, “This crossing is guarded in no way, either by a watchman, flasher, or gates.” The crossing at Water Street included five sets of tracks, and a siding, meaning vehicles and pedestrians were required to travel a distance of 80 feet or more to cross all the tracks. On this day in 1879, a fire raged through Deadwood, destroying over 300 buildings and leaving 2,000 people homeless. The fire started in a bakery on Sherman Street and quickly spread through town.
