I kid you not, Im writing to share a piece of GOOD NEWS from 2020. But I also have a lil shpiel. Read on to the end! (Its worth it, I promise.) 🖤 Last September, I ran 18km for #ConnorsRun, a terrific annual fundraiser run by the @rcdfoundation, a brilliant Australian charity that helps fund research into paediatric #braincancer. You guys helped me raised $8,000 (still cant believe it!) in memory of my darling nephew Gideon, who died from #GBM in May 2019. Thats 10% of the funds raised by #TeamGideon! 💪 This year theres obviously no fun run – the challenge is to run your way any day. And, my friends, I am taking that very literally: Ive committed to running 100kms (thats 62 miles) over the month of September. That averages out to 3.3kms per day – not a huge amount, but double what I normally do in a month. Three days in, Im sitting at precisely 10km in total. (Turns out an 8pm curfew is... very motivating?!) And Ive raised almost $4000 so far. Hooray and THANK YOU. 🏃‍♀️ Anyway!!! Sometimes we read about history. Sometimes we get to see history unfold. Other times we get to meet and talk to history. Rest in Heaven to the Honorable Mayor Harold Moss. I met him the first time when I was 11 or 12 years old and didnt understand his place in history at the time. He was cheerful to me and in total command of the moment and the room. As I got older and understood more about him and spent time around him , I learned of his impact and lasting legacy. He walked through doors that werent opened, then mentored and led others through those same doors. A true community beacon that will be missed. I want to take a moment to publicly thank everyone who continues to follow Madelines journey. I have heard parents complain that when a child passes people often leave their page. It makes sense as I know first hand it is difficult to follow someone elses grief. Its so scary and if a click of a button can remove you from the reality it doesnt seem strange to me at all that many would choose to unfollow. Anyway, seeing that that hasnt happened and that you are all still listening is heartwarming. ❤️ It really is. So thank you. And I know Madeline would also thank you for continuing to support us- thats all she was worried about. Today I was really struggling. Its ok. This is normal. Its been 78 days since I last kissed this beautiful face. Our entire family is in grief counseling/therapy and proud of the fact that we are taking care of ourselves, functioning and somehow, in some way, managing our pain. If there is ever a way we can honor Madeline it is to do just this. I promised her we would be ok and we are working SO hard to make every day the best we can- obviously you all know where we learned that skill. While 78 days certainly doesnt make me an expert in child loss I have learned that you never want to be told to move on. Madeline grew in my body. We created her and we grew together as a family and an emotionally healthy parent or sibling will never ever move on. We will, of course, as life works, continue to wake up each day and smile and do our best to be good people and impact the world as best we can like Madeline taught us. But we dont want to move on. It is impossible for a mother and child to break their bond- even through death. She will always be with me. And thats exactly how I want it. I completely understand the thought process behind telling someone to let go or move forward but I believe our children are given to us for a reason and that Madelines work here on earth is not done as long as I continue to stay connected to her spirit and continue to spread her gift. With the looming prospect of shutdowns later in the fall and winter, state officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of all students receiving some in-person education, while they still can. “The question is if it is spreading in schools and if our mitigation efforts are working,” West Hartford Superintendent of Schools Tom Moore said. “If the situation changes, we will adjust, and we monitor it daily.” With more students learning in the same school building, districts are working to heighten health and safety protocols and adjusting for the possibility of increased contacts among students and staff. Many schools have separated students, particularly at the elementary level, into small cohorts to reduce the risk of virus spread and the number of students who have to potentially quarantine. But districts may have to adjust cohorting and social distancing guidelines to accommodate additional students.
