From the 1920s to the 1960s, motion picture theaters enlivened the city of #Hartford. Main Street glowed from the luminous marquees of the Loew’s Poli, the Poli Palace, the Crown, and the Strand. The Allyn and E. M. Loew’s stood on Asylum Street, the Colonial on Farmington Avenue, the Lenox on Albany Avenue, the Princess and the Regal were on State Street, the State Theatre on Village Street, the Webster on Webster Street, and others. In addition to the double features these theaters screened cartoons and newsreels, and some included Wurlitzer music. Hartford’s motion picture theaters were magnificent. Their designs reflected architectural trends of the day. On Monday, unmasked protesters shattered a glass panel on the fourth floor House gallery as they pushed into the area and defied restrictions for social distancing. Photo 1: Speaker of the House Scott Bedke arranged that protesters could fill the fourth floor gallery seating without social distancing if they followed decorum, as the special session got underway. Photo 2: Residents chanted “Let us in” as Idaho State Police guarded the doors to House chambers. The gallery had been arranged for socially distanced seating, which was quickly filled, and angered protesters. Gene told me that Tamara Toumanova was living in the Hotel Princess Elizabeth when he met with her to discuss her being in Invitation to the Dance. He said phone service was so bad in those days that everything had to be done by wires. Toumanova said, “Please come see me. I want to be in this movie!” So Gene flew to Paris to meet with her. As he said, I had a place for her. I was going to dance with Diana Adams and she was going to do the next thing with another guy.” But Toumanova said she would not do the movie unless she danced with Gene. “So I had to make the switch,” he explained. “Then she had, I think, only two and a half weeks. But I was so anxious to get her. She was one of the famous ‘baby ballerinas’ and the epitome of star class in the ballet world. At the turn of the 20th century the New York Café (New York Kávéház) was the most beautiful and the most beloved coffee house in Budapest. It was a popular place among writers and editors, in fact, the most influential newspapers were edited here, upstairs in the gallery. After World War II, the once famous café fell into disrepair and it served as a sporting goods shop.
