BATALLA DE LOS CAMPOS CATALÁUNICOS La batalla, ocurrida en 451, no fue más que una de las consecuencias de la inestabilidad que sufría la provincia de la Galia en en todo el siglo V. Aecio, general romano de origen godo, logró el poder el Galia, ejerciendo de magister militum de dicha provincia, y siendo protegido continuamente con su famosa guardia huna. Sin embargo, el pueblo huno, bajo el mando de Atila, que prohibió a su pueblo servir de mercenario para Roma, atacó la inestable provincia gala con la supuesta razón de atacar a los visigodos asentados en la Galia, también enemigos de los romanos. Sin embargo, Aecio reconoció el peligro antes de que Atila lo sorprendiera y firmó un foedus con los visigodos, que lucharían para él a cambio del territorio que ocupaban. Así, los romanos y los godos orientales sumaban unos 20.000 o poco más. Por su parte, los hunos y la alianza de gépidos, burgundios, ostrogodos, vándalos y demás pueblos sumaban unos 25.000 hombres. Cerca de Orleans, el ejército romano-germano alcanzó al de Atila, quien no se esperaba la alianza de sus enemigos y ya no estaba tan seguro de poder ganar la batalla en esas condiciones. Aecio situó a los romanos en el ala izquierda, a los alanos que se le unieron poco antes de la batalla en el centro y a los visigodos en el ala derecha. Today marks the 76th anniversary of the Waal River Crossing and the liberation of Nijmegen by soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division on September 20, 1944, during one of the most courageous actions of Operation Market Garden. One of the main objectives of the operation was to capture the two bridges over the Waal river in Nijmegen and relieve the British 1st Airborne Division and Polish Parachute Brigade at Arnhem. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The advance was halted by the SS Panzer units, making it impossible to approach the bridges from the south. It was the 3rd day of Operation Market Garden, and the British at Arnhem were in dire straits. An assault crossing of the river was necessary, but it was a seemingly impossible task. However Brigadier General James Gavin was determined to make a crossing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At about 15:00, men of the 504th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division, began the river assault across the Waal in 26 canvas bridge engineers boats. The Americans had no training on the British-made boats, and a shortage of paddles required some troopers to paddle the craft with rifle butts. The air was filled with small arms, machinegun, mortar, and artillery fire. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Only half the boats survived the crossing under heavy fire, and only 11 of those were in condition to return across the river to deliver succeeding waves. Lieutenant General Dempsey, commander of the British Second Army, after witnessing the crossing, characterized the attack with a single word as he shook his head and simply said, Unbelievable. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Half of the 260 US paratroopers were killed or wounded during the crossing of the Waal river. The costly attack was nicknamed Little Omaha. After four hours of fierce fighting and heavy losses on both sides, the paratroopers with the help of the British 30th Corps succeeded in capturing the bridges intact. But, maybe, I can inspire you to throw your empty can in a recycling bin or to look into political candidates that align with more than just one criteria. The strangest weapons of ww2, the anti-tank dogs. During the 1st world war, dogs were important for all the belligerents and were used for a lot of things. So the Soviets had the idea of using dogs to destroy enemy tanks. So today we are going to see the most famous strange weapon of this project. In the 1930s therefore, the Soviets built schools to train dogs, first with circus trainers and hunters. The initial idea of sending a dog which then set a bomb under a tank by cutting a rope with its teeth is abandoned because it is far too difficult for a dog. German Shepherds (the dogs chosen by the Soviets) were then used as Kamikazes: The next plan was that the dog would die, but the bomb would successfully detonate. The dog would run underneath a tank, with something sticking out of the top of the bomb, so once it made contact with the tank, it would explode . When the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, anti-tank dogs were therefore used during the Battle of Moscow. But everything did not go as planned. Indeed, the Soviets had trained their dogs on Soviet tanks running on diesel, while the German tanks used gasoline. Thus, the smell of the dogs did not work and in case of the presence of Soviet tanks, we can easily guess the result. In addition, the dogs had been trained to position themselves under immobilized tanks. But in a combat situation and with all the noise that entails, the dogs were frightened, even more so as the tanks moved forward. Most often, they waited for the tank to stop but the Germans killed them long before. Finally, very often sent as a sacrifice, the dogs retreated in panic towards the trenches where their masters were. When they jumped into the trenches, they exploded, killing all the soldiers around them.
