When you hear the word “terrorist,” who do you picture? Chances are, it is not a white person. The idea that terrorists are Arab and or Muslim is pervasive in the whole world even before 9/11. There is a long history of “Orientalism,”which positions Arabs and Muslims as exotic, uncivilized, dangerous “others”. First, the depiction of Muslims on television and film is surprisingly limited.A research that analyzed over 900 Hollywood films concluded that Arabs or Muslim men were usually represented as terrorists or other stock villains. Second, the news repeatedly links “Muslim” with “terrorism.” When terror attacks are perpetrated by Muslims, they receive significantly more media attention. The other common narrative is that white Christian extremists who commit terrorist attacks are not terrorists. Even after committing heinous acts of violence, we see white Christians depicted as human beings, not terrorists. The media describes their childhood and shows us their graduation photos, not their mug shots. They are shy, quiet young men or charming Southern gentlemen. At school, they sang in the choir or played varsity sports. They have favorite songs and favorite movies. As a white terrorist, my assumption made about my motive is that some personal trauma must have triggered my violence. In contrast, like a stock villain in a movie, the Muslim perpetrator has no backstory, no grieving family, his motive is clear enough. My argument is not that white terrorists are never mentally ill; many are. But so too are many Muslim terrorists. However, the presumption of white innocence means that for white terrorists we look to mental illness for explanations in a way that we do not for nonwhite terrorists. The demonization of Muslims was well underway during Trump’s campaign,at which time he supported a ban on Muslims entering the United States. Arabs are afraid for their safety because of white supremacist groups. Children have been targets as well. Many of us had been bullied because of our faith.And a quarter of the time the bullying has been by their teachers. About 7 years ago, few months after I started climbing, I saw an old video ad of @kjorgeson doing this climb. I climbed about V3, and I didn’t really understand outdoor climbing, I just knew I was going to send this boulder. I’ll save you the stories and the sessions where I wasn’t strong enough, bled too much, or just gave up. Hundreds and hundreds of attempts of questioning my ability in climbing, and contemplating whether or not to keep trying. Instead, I’ll highlight the amazing group of friends that always came to support me. People who genuinely believed in my capabilities and shared my stoke. I’ll highlight the pure beauty of bouldering that is shown through this piece of rock. I’ll highlight the battle I had today, sending on my last attempt, 4 hours into the session, skin was low, it was freezing, beta was perfecting, grammar is failing.. Climb because it inspires you! I’ve been growing more fed up with the effects that social media has had on me recently. Now more than seemingly ever, this space is starting to have a net negative effect on my quality of life. Fight Club had it right, “We are consumers. Were the by-products of a lifestyle obsession.” When we consume more than we produce, we eventually become full of the shit we’re being fed. Without careful attention, we let the noose slowly tighten to the point of suffocation. “The things you own end up owning you”, as the saying goes. This profile is meant to be a reflection of myself, my thoughts, and my experiences - an outlet. The moment that it becomes anything else, or starts to feel like it is having any control over me or the quality of my life is the moment I know I need to pull away. This app is not real life - it is so, so far removed from it. Allowing it any purchase on you or your state of being is just not worth that cost. There are positives to it all, of course, but when they are outweighed it does oneself good to separate. So I’m off to spend more time being present - more focused on myself, the people important to me, and the things I want to do. To get back into that arena and bring a bit more life into my day-to-day in this time of mundanity. “Finish” is out everywhere tomorrow. I am walking in a dream until then. I am continually thankful for the few people that helped make this happen. @davidduartemusic and I worked really hard to bring this song to life. We worked it from a very rough, half finished demo into something complex and layered. I learned so much about the recording process and am thankful to have worked with a producer who let me have input on every little thing. He e-introduced me to @stevieblacke who remotely recorded the live strings, and @machinetheproducer who mastered the track. @saint_luke handled all of the visuals. Again, I found in him someone who helped build something that served the art and the artist and am thankful for his talent and ear. I’ll go on much more about this once the video drops but it was just him and I on the shoot. You’ll have to see it to not believe it. This song and it’s release means so much to me, and if I start in on that now I’ll run out of space. Thank you to those named, times one million, forever. For our 100th post I thought I might introduce myself to some of you who may not know. . . . my name is joshua I was a former Sous chef in Orange County area I have helped open up some of orange county’s most enjoyed restaurants such as farmhouse, the mayors table and most recently toast kitchen and bakery. I was set to begin a new challenge in my career right as covid happened and the transition into my new job got caught in the crossfire of corona virus and I found myself unemployed. The restaurant where I was set to go was furloughing their entire staff until further notice. . . . In order to combat depression and self loathing I began to study baking and pastry at home and thanks to a much needed push from a loved one I offered my treats to the public . . . I do not consider myself a “baker” because I do not follow the traditional rules of baking and often impart my unconventional palette into my recipes. Collect memories not things, they say. Yet, the last couple of days spending my time in Hong Kong and from my past dives all around the world my memories from our oceans would look something like this as well. Throughout our collective pause due to the Corona virus, we have sought to understand the ripple effects of our actions, and how our individual choices add up to create global impacts sometimes ones we can’t even see. Pollution impacts more than our beaches. It is impacting our communities and our health. It impacts all the creatures who call the ocean home. At least 80% of marine debris, which impacts ecosystems and wildlife is plastic pollution. Our ocean and waterways are filled with plastics. At least 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing 268,940 tons are currently floating at sea where fishes and other animals feed on. An increasing flood of trash is harming wildlife and our health. But there is always room for improvement and a chance for us to do better. We’re by far not perfect but we need to strive to make change inside and outside our lives. For me, this trash we see outside in the worlds oceans is just the reflection of the trash we as humankind collected inside of us all over the past decades: Mindless consumerism in form of single-use plastic, Fast Fashion, Fast Food, Fast Travels, unhealthy lifestyles until burnouts, heart attacks and deadly viruses stop us to make us think again. Mindfulness is something we only can achieve if we give ourselves the time, reflect and think about what we do to our planet and to ourselves day by day. So this pandemic is a defining moment. How we as a collective want to continue. We all call this earth our home and it’s on all of us to work together towards a brighter future. There is no single hero in this story who will win this for us. We need all the heroes out there. The small and simple people. The passionate NGOs and companies.
