(Trail not taken)This past weekend me and @thecinja have hiked the ridge line you see in this picture. 7000 ft elevation gain jagged rocks scramble all the way, traversed through many peaks ( Pyramid peak(9,983), Aaron peak (9,686), Mt Agassiz (9,975) Mt Price (9,975) ...) all in one day. It was definitely not for the faint of heart. Thank you @alltrails for the maps , without which we could haven’t made this adventure. In many cultures, the color red symbolizes luck, and you sure need a lot of luck to find red sea glass! Red sea glass is extremely rare and only around 1 in every 5,000 pieces of sea glass is red. This rarity is largely because red glass is challenging and expensive to make. In order to produce the deep ruby-red color, glass makers traditionally needed to add gold to the molten glass! This gold-infused red glass first became widely popular in the 1800s and was seen in Victorian lamps, rare dishware and in stained-glass windows. A very limited amount of red glass has been mass produced since the 1930s, so if you find a piece of deep ruby sea glass on Spectacle Island it is safe to guess about its age. More modern methods to produce red glass are less expensive and include a combined mixture of selenium and cadmium sulfide. This type of modern red glass is usually brighter than the gold inflused ‘ruby red’ glass and is often used to make boat lights. While not monetarily valuable like a true red gem, These ‘beach rubies’ are incredibly valuable to and legally protected by the state of Massachusetts. Sea glass not only holds important stories about Spectacle Island, but also provides us with a window into the lives of Bostonians and Americans of the past. If you are lucky enough to find one of these precious gems, embrace your good fortune, take a photo and then leave it behind. If you can’t bear to leave such a rare treasure on the beach, feel free to bring the piece of red sea glass to a ranger who will add it to our archaeological log and display. As soon as a piece of sea glass is taken home, the story and beauty that that piece holds is gone from the public forever. I took this photo on the 8th day of my winter trip to Zion this past February. It was a chilly evening along the Virgin River, and I loved the experience of composing this photo while listening to the sound of the river. At this particular bend in the river, a large sandstone wall catches late afternoon sunlight, which reflects off the surface of the water. - Balanced stones on the North Shore of Lake Superior. My photo from March 2013. I know its not high art but it gives me a feeling of calm.
