A Japanese tea ceremony is one of the most structured and yet intimate events Ive ever experienced. It is, at its heart, an act of hospitality. The host invites you into a space that they have prepared especially for you, catering everything from the message on the scroll, the choice of pottery, and the flower arrangement to your taste and the context in which the tea gathering is taking place. It is an expression not just of the hosts individual sense of style, but of their knowledge and connection to the guests themselves and the world around them. It is as meditative as it is contemplative, and it is a space where hours can feel like minutes, and seconds like days. For this photograph, I was invited into the home of the host pictured here. She has a tea room built into a standalone shed in her backyard, complete with a traditional tea room entrance, built in tatami mats, and all. Untitled, London England, 1966⠀ Gordon Parks⠀ ⠀ Edition 5 of 10 Our recently acquired piece by Gordon Parks features his intimate and nuanced portrait of the legendary athlete and human rights advocate Muhammad Ali. Receiving unprecedented access to the champion, Gordon Parks photographed and profiled Ali twice for Life magazine. Parks met Ali during his training in Miami, before flying to London to document the run up to his fight against Henry Cooper. Upon meeting Ali in Florida in 1966, Parks wrote in Life: I felt free to tell him quite directly that I had come to Miami to see whether he was really as obnoxious as people were making him out to be. Ali replied: “No need to beat about the bush, brother.. I did Kuchi-Kiri 口切. Tea leaves which are harvested in spring are store in a jar which is then stored in a cool place. These days that might be in or around the teahouse or cooling cellar. Long ago this jar with new leaves was stored in the ground or in the mountains to keep it cool. Around the November 7 or 8, the new season of tea begins and the Ro is used for the first time indicating the start of the winter season. At this time, to celebrate the beginning of a new season of tea, the seal of the jar with new tea plucked in spring is broken and the new, fresh tea is used for the first time. Breaking this seal of the jar is called Kuchikiri. In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I am sharing eyewitness accounts from first generation hibakusha – the Japanese word for those affected by the 1945 atomic bomb attacks – to highlight their continued activism and ongoing plight for nuclear disarmament. This is first generation hibakusha Mr. Jongkeun Lee’s story: “As my name suggests, I am of Korean heritage. Up until five years ago, my name was Egawa, a Japanese name. It took me 84 years to use my Korean name publicly. I felt that this was necessary because I am one of few remaining non-Japanese hibakusha survivors, and our stories need to be told. My father immigrated to Japan because he could no longer sustain a life in Korea amidst the Japanese occupation. Japanese officers came to his village regularly and seized his crops and livestock. Luckily, my father did not need a passport to enter Japan, as he was from a dominion country. He established a sumiyaki (charcoal making) business there and moved my mother and older sister out to Japan five years later. In 1928, I was born in Shimane Pref., Japan. My father never spoke to us about our homeland, or why we moved to Hiroshima afterwards. We were raised as Japanese, spoke Japanese, and worked as Japanese laborers. In fact, I never told my parents where my workplace was for fear that they would visit and my cover would be up. In 1945, I was exposed to the atomic bomb on my way to work and suffered debilitating burns. I was reunited with my parents a day later, as they had been out looking for me even though they had no idea where I worked. My older sister, who had also been on her way to work, remains missing to this day. After the bombing, my family headed to Shimonoseki to return to Korea. At the very last minute, my mother refused to go. ‘No home, no temple,’ she said. After nearly three decades, we had no one or place to return to in Korea. We decided to stay in Japan. In hindsight, this momentous decision was how we avoided becoming victims of the Korean War. The story of Samhae Soju can be traced back to Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). This ancient recipe is carried on by brewmaster Kim, Taek Sang who is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Seoul. The heritage of Samhae Soju arises from rigid brewing method. This soju must take three stages of brewing which elongate the process to 108 days. Each stage takes place on the day of pig of each month, meaning sool is brewed 3 times on every 36th day. (Asian zodiac signs cycle every 12 days.) It was believed that the blood of pig is the purest and cleanest, therefore ancestors brewed on a pig day in order to produce pure and clean sool. No one knows if the day actually has an affect on the final result but this rigorous method forces them to extend the fermentation period which develops depth and complexity - @woorisoul_nyc on Instagram
