Thought I’d throw out some of my favorite accessories for keeping my shoulders and elbows healthy. - 1. Fixed Rows- hands down my favorite back exercise for seated athletes. One of the few that allows us to go truly heavy - 2. Rear Delt Raises- another great way to get the back of the body stronger for seated athletes - 3. Pronation vs Band Press- this ones been a huge help keeping my elbow happy on heavy bench days (this one from the mind of my awesome wife @svogar) - 4. Arnold Press- I do these a little different than most and exaggerate the swing out to really make my back work. - 5. Smush Press- you can do these with DBs, change plates, etc. Main goal is to keep elbows together and smush in on the weights - 6. Bandy Pull Aparts- these are a must for all seated athletes. Fluted serpentine arrowhead.  There is some debate among archaeologists as to why this feature was used by the people that came to be called the Clovis culture.  The way I understand it, it was so widely used among that culture and absent from others that it’s essentially diagnostic..meaning that if you find a point with a center groove, it is a Clovis point.  I am far from an expert on any of this, and I know some of you are, so please correct me on anything I get wrong. As for the why, I’ve seen articles that suggest that it somehow made them more impact resistant, while others focus on the artistic aspect.   @huntprimitive has a great video where he shows that it may have been used to be able to stick the point into a split stick, rather than having to remove material from the shaft to accommodate it. The first time I ended up with a fluted point was an accident.  I was grinding one side and a big chunk chipped out of the middle, so I ground out the other side to make it match and was immediately reminded of the clovis points.   When I went to mount it, I noticed that I didn’t have to remove nearly as much material from the arrow shaft to fit the point, which I saw as a benefit when using the somewhat weak western red cedar that I make my arrows from. It made good sense to me, that by removing some material from the center of the point, I could leave more of the wood in place, and end up with the same narrow profile.   The stone is much stronger than the shaft, and I still left plenty of thickness in the groove, so I believe this ends up being a stronger configuration. On top of this, I also noticed that as long as the flutes line up well enough with the tip of the point, they essentially lock it into the shaft like a Lego piece, taking out the eyeball straightening and occasional point drift that happens if I’m not careful.   It could in theory make the shaft more likely to split, but I tend to put a lot of wrapping behind my points, so I don’t expect that to be an issue here.   It does take ten to fifteen minutes and a careful eye to grind the grooves, so it is more time consuming; but if it makes for a stronger connection, it’s probably worth it. - @nwprimate on Instagram

Days like today are why Strength Training has been an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT part of my life 🦍 After acclimating to school and getting into a good routine of eating and staying hydrated I came into the gym feeling great. My goal for every session is to become a better lifter. With that said, I decided to go with a little reverse band Squat in wraps. And as I warmed up everything felt great so we worked up to a top set of 725! This is the most I’ve EVER had on my back. It felt amazing to push the mental barrier of actually putting that weight on my shoulders and felt even better to conquer the challenge when I could have stopped at 675. And to add icing to the cake I FUCKING BURIED IT 🦍 I’m also at the lightest I’ve been in maybe 2 years. Down 19 from my prep weight and 12 since I moved here 2 months ago. So it really shows something about being lighter and healthier instead of a big piece of shit. 🦍 Wraps have been quite the experiment and @frankdaddy29 has been helping me figure out the perfect self wrap with his 3m FD Chokers. He said I could get another revolution in so I’ve been working with that and it is going great 🦍 Bunch of supplemental work with bands after that to make the day worth it and fuck my whole CNS up even more 😈 Thanks to the @juggernautgym602 family for the support and spotting. @flex_on_m @juggernaut_chalky @maldo_gainz2020 you guys are the best. Definitely my sharpest point yet.   As far as I know, this stone is serpentine, and for whatever reason, this piece got significantly sharper on the edges than any I’ve made before.   I really like using slate because it is so available, and I can often get it to split into thin sheets that make it easier to shape, but I think this is a superior material when it comes to ground points. The downside is that it is a lot harder to work with, as it doesn’t break predictably so instead of splitting it, I have to peck it down with gentle taps with a hammer stone and grind away the rest.  This means that it takes significantly longer to make a point than with slate, but it’s more impact resistant, and the edge on this one is unbelievable. So 3 vids of deads and the only weight that was different is 700 in the first one. 700 694 694 I first switched to hook just out of curiosity. The moment I tried, I fell in love with it. Hook is very consistent during training but when meet day rolled around, my weight tends to fluctuate a bit after a bunch of fluids and high carb foods contributing to the bloat in my hands. Straps can be very beneficial when used correctly, there are definitely ways to cheat when they’re wrapped around your wrist. I like making things harder by actually trying to hang on and not have the bar by my finger tips, along with wedging and being more patient than usual. Slower in vid 2 as you can see. Mix as of right now is more consistent than ever. I notice that once I pulled something mix I’m guaranteed to pull it in a meet. I don’t regret trying hook at all. In fact, there’s little cues I’ve learned from pulling hook that I’m applying to mix grip now. - @quadiyama on Instagram

These are some things I’ve been doing lately, running the @kizentrainingofficial 496lbs squat in wraps (all time wrapped squat 501lbs/479lbs raw). 303lbs Bench PR 511lbs Deadlift (all time 551lbs). Since I made the decision not to do this February meet, gonna switch gears from meet prep back into offseason programming. When I first arrived at Forge following my prolonged strength training hiatus, I weighed 215 and struggled squatting over 315. Now I’m roughly 240 and stronger everyday. I got up to 550lbs, but on the second video you could see that my right knee that’s missing it’s ACL wasn’t having it and I was running into some stability issues. Oh well... still pushed it out! Deadlifts 3x2 at 395lbs Superset with Single Arm Swing 3x5/5 at 40kg Yesterday’s workout was more fun than I anticipated. The power from the swing really helped my pull. This is the best 395 has felt in a long time. Video is of 1st set of swings and last set of deadlifts. Legs got a little shaky and I’m glad I was only doing 2 sets. I have been helping clients and friends find the right pieces for their home gym. I think for most people the basic standard weight plates are going to be ok. But I highly recommend investing in a good barbell. I have the Ohio bar from @roguefitness and it’s been an awesome bar for all my at home lifts. I’ll probably get one with center knurling when/if I get a squat rack. I probably will always recommend rogue as their customer service has always been awesome. Rocking my @rhone shorts again. For now, my next meet is scheduled for June 20th in Kansas City! Up until then Ill do these week in review posts to show what training looks like until then. Hopefully Ill be able to highlight some improvements during that time along with contributing cues and strategies. This past week was the first week back to a heavy strength block. The past two blocks were ramping up into this style of training using lighter weights. Until earlier this year I spent too much time on either end of the intensity spectrum. Months on end chasing numbers, followed by months of hypertrophy work that was just too light. I know I made progress through that time, but it definitely feels like I was spinning my wheels. Nothing wrong with experimenting to find out whats right for your training, but Im ready to get this ball rolling. 705lbs... So, my final warm up set of 295kg (swipe to see) moved incredibly well. So we loaded 320kg/705lbs, and it just wasn’t there. I controlled the descent and took it to depth, but as per usual I didn’t use my upper body and this time it buried me. A very disappointing end to a very productive phase of squatting. I’m really wondering how training will be a few months down the road. Assuming I don’t eat like a fat shit again (@phamismfit please hold my hand lmao) I should ideally be putting myself in a position for PR’s across SBD early next year. Sumo finally feels comfortable again, and that’s what I’ll be sticking with for my comp style. Yes, I mean that this time 😂 I took some time comparing my 617 opener from last March and the first 606 single from the other week, and I think I’m finally in a good spot considering I’m 10lbs lighter and clearly not peaked. Such a fun experience at Canadian Masters Competition on Sunday. Both my openers were competition PRs, which gives me confidence and motivation to keep growing and improving. I learned a lot from this competition. It is a game of millimeters. My 3rd Snatch was right there, and my third CJ felt good, but received two reds. In the end finished with 97+107. Even though I had higher expectations I am still quite happy with this and feel there is so much room to improve. A big thank you to @me_beauchemin for keeping me calm, and focused, and coaching me through my nerves. And another big thank you to @londonweightlifting coaches and team for the continued support. Finished with 20-15-10 on all aux work. Def pissed that my right leg wasn’t agreeing with me. The 675/705 felt so easy but my right leg just wasn’t cooperating and it continued in the working sets as well. Working sets moved pretty fast except for set 3 though when I missed the 5th rep but came back strong on set 4 with the straps! Still have a lot of work to do before the comp in 4 weeks. If there’s anything I’ve learned over the last few months - is the concept of mind over matter. Pre-COVID, I heavily relied on stimulants such as pre-workout to get me that energy and focus for my workouts. I was so sold on the idea that pre-workout made workouts THAT much better. I took pre-workout every single workout for 6 years straight, never having cycled off it. But COVID had forced me to train in situations where I was less than motivated, and had a lack of stimulants. I’m now going on my 8th month of being stimulant free (no caffeine or stimulant supplements whatsoever). Here’s a 195KG/429LB triple from last week ➡️ to this week’s 200KG/440LB double, that my old self would never have thought of hitting without stimulants (while also running on a block of early morning shifts). D E A D L I F T In einigen Wochen steht nach sehr langer Zeit mal wieder ein Wettkampf an für mich. #WPCGERMANY Geplant werde ich bei den Disziplinen Deadlift & Bench an verschiedenen Tagen bis 110kg Körpergewicht teilnehmen. Mein Ziel ist ganz klar: 330kg Deadlift + 220kg Bench. Einigermaßen saubere 315kg Deadlift seht ihr im Video (1. Video), 310kg (2. Video), 3x Fail mit 320kg (3. Video), 290kg beltless (4. Video), 300kg (5. Video). Zuerst hatte ich 310kg beladen. Die flogen wirklich verdammt easy nach einem langen Coaching Tag mit @jonesstyles . Danach legte ich 320kg auf. Mein HookGrip versagte. Ansonsten wären die oben gewesen. Etwas ermüdet machte ich ein Setback auf 315kg und, jetzt kommt es, konnte ich was lernen von meinem Trainee. Und zwar einen Mini-Clue beim HookGrip, der meinen Denkfehler korrigierte und schwups - der Griff war bombenfest und ich konnte mit letzter Kraft die 315kg ziehen. Was sagt uns das? Denkt nicht ihr seid allwissend oder perfekt. Hört jedem zu und filtert am Ende die wichtigen Infos für euch raus. Jeder kann von jedem was lernen. Ob’s hilfreich ist, ist eine andere Sache. In diesem Fall war es so! 🙏 Ahja, 210kg Bench von vor einigen Wochen (6. Video). Momentan wiege ich 113-114kg. Eine Mini-Diät oder etwas Watercuten bringen mich in meine passende Gewichtsklasse und ich werde dann 3x BW heben und 2x BW benchen. Drückt mir die Daumen, wenn eure noch dran sind. 😛🙌 Wenn hoffentlich bald mein Überbein am Oberschenkel keine Probleme mehr macht oder es eines Tages operiert wurde, werde ich die 880kg Total bis 110kg BW im Powerlifting anpeilen. 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝟬𝟭 🏋🏼‍♂️ Even if you perform a detailed google search on functional exercise programs, over 200 million results come up...WTF! To keep things incredibly simple, a great exercise program requires three things - consistency, progressive overload, and periodization. If you are deciding to write your own programming and not purchase one from a professional coach, I would program your daily routines following these guidelines. ➕ Warm Up/Primer: I typically begin most warm ups with a 5-10 minute walk then head into a central nervous system “primer” which warms up muscle groups that are to be used during the compound movement. If you are squatting, box jumps or broad jumps are great. If you are deadlifting, KB swings are a great primer. ➕ Compound Exercise: the single exercise that involves the most energy since it utilizes multiple muscle groups - Squats, Deadlifts, Bench Press, OH Press, Bent-Over Rows, are all examples of this. This is the movement where you test your strength, power and/or endurance the most each week. ➕ Accessory Exercises: Choose 2-3 exercises that compliment your compound lift and will help progress it. If you did Bench Press - Lat Pulldowns, Floor Presses and Tricep Extensions are all examples of exercises that help improve strength for the Bench Press. ➕ Weaknesses/Conditioning: Your pick - if you are a Crossfit junkie, this is where you perform your “metcons” or conditioning circuits. If you are more into traditional exercise routines, this is where you might do some abdominal exercises, balancing/stability exercises, or steady-state cardio. ➕ Cooldown: Spend at least 2 minutes performing some deep breathing exercises to slow down your stress hormone release, then spend some time walking on the treadmill trying to bring down your heart rate. For an additional bonus, spend 5-10 minutes stretching if you want to get the most out of your workout and recover properly! At the end of the day, the best exercise program is the one that you can stick to long-term. If you don’t enjoy what you do, you aren’t going to do it, plain and simple. Lower Body Bicep Day. Coach @evolutionfitnessnd says it’s times to do push and do barbell RDLs; so the Marine does what it’s told 😂. By the time I got to my top set my lower back was TIGHT, limiting the range of motion at the top. I’d super set these with “good mornings” on the #powersquat with the idea of keeping the contraction on the hams with the RDL then getting a deep stretch with the good mornings. (The idea at least worked out in my head 🤷🏼‍♂️) **** All in all this complete ham day was a freaggin grind. Falling asleep heading to the gym... even at 2 in the afternoon and 300mgs of caffeine in my body. My warm up, compounds, and ancillary movements all hurt and took more out of me than they should have. I was chalking it up to a loss. It wasn’t until I got done with cardio that I really felt like my hamstrings had been worked. I could feel the blood flow, the fatigue... and then the next morning when I got out of bed 🦽 yeesh. Just a reminder that our mental limits can carry us past what the body is currently feeling comfortable with. I know this may be a relatively common sense statement but a press should be the most deliberate movement you do in the gym. A push is single channeled act of unadulterated aggression. Think about the practical usage of a push.. its to put distance between you and a threat.. so why would you treat your bench press any different. Learn to be deliberately aggressive with your press.. push yourself away create space in the most explosive way possible. Heavy dumbbells heavy close grip movements shit that will scare you a bit. Grab those 100s even if you can do 2 reps learn to press with speed, violence and momentum.. most people who struggle with bench 1. Lack pressing power just pure explosive potential or 2. Stability lack of coordination and control which breeds apprehensive tendencies and or fear Do that and a large bench will follow. Yesterday’s deadlifts were freaking awesome! Hit a little PR for a 5x5! Was super stoked! Deadlifts are as follows: . . 585x5x5 (set 5 video 1; set 1 video 2; set 3 video 3) 495x3x5 snatch grip (set 3 video 4) . . Was really stoked because this was the first time of hitting a 5x5 at this heavy of a weight. Usually do a 3x5 or a 6x3 but got all 25 reps pumped me up hence the face at the end of set 5. Def felt like my form is getting on point and I’m getting better with my starting position and head position. Just on some reps I was moving so fast that I was almost shrugging the bar. Need to fix that and need to keep my crappy right leg from getting on my toes when it gets fatigued. Other than that, I was pretty pumped with how things felt and how speedy they were! Just have to keep working so I can get my 730ish beltless pull at my October comp. Just have to keep grinding!
