Seasonal Lash Shed. Is this really a thing? And the answer is YES! Some clients think they are born with lashes and that they never fall out. In fact, natural lashes are constantly shedding everyday because of our lash cycle. It is completely normal to shed 3-5 lashes each day. We don’t ever notice as our natural lashes are super fine apart that when you have eyelash extension it becomes more apparent. Now do we lose more lashes in certain seasons? The answer is YES! Like animals such as a cat or dog, they shed their coats to get ready for the new warmer temperatures in spring/summer and it is the same for us humans. We, too, shed our hairs in preparation for changes in the temperature. However, we are very different from one another and it can be opposite from person to person. During the winter months, humidity can be quite low which can lead to brittle lashes causing them to fall out faster. While in the summer months we tend to be more active, the sun is shining which means more vitamin D production; healthier lifestyle. Everything tends to be better including our lashes, nails and skin. So it is very true that our bodies do react as the seasons change. But dont worry, the dreaded seasonal shed won’t last forever. It’s really important to educate our clients about the seasonal changes, the different stages of lashes - anagen, catagen telogen and also practicing techniques as a lash artist to battle the dreaded seasonal lash sheds. . .The good news is that seasonal lash shed lasts only 4-6 weeks. 😻Read Caption Poetry Below😻 Its been a minute since I posted any poetry! As you all know, I run @poetry.pod and Ive gotten a bit busy over there - I will still be posting poetry here, just a little more infrequently than I used to, as Ive got more on my plate now! This is a piece inspired by my bestest pal in the whole world 😊 my kitty Phineas. These are just some of my favourite pictures of him from over the years. A Girl And Her Cat She rustles in her bed, not yet awake, but not asleep anymore. She rustles again - shes definitely awake now! Thats what he waits for. As soon as he knows shes waking, but never before, he jumps up onto the bed and crawls all over her body just to get to rub the wettest nose all over her face. She pulls him close, as she secretly loves waking up to the warm, comforting sound of his demanding purrs, while he is cuddled up beside her, drooling on her heavily, and how! She calls him her little percolator. When she finally gets out of bed to feed him, she trips over him half the time because he just needs to be first! She laughs to herself as she says its not a race! There are days that she looks at all the brightness he brings to her life, and she is suddenly saddened by the thought of him no longer being beside her. She cherishes all the time spent with him, and while she knows hes here today and is thankful beyond belief for him, she cant help but paint each beautiful moment as bittersweet, because one day, she knows she will have to wake up without him, and it will be oh, so cold. Like each grain of sand slowly filling an hourglass. Time is escaping - moments gone forever. Shes not ready to let him go. Read all the way through! LASH SHEDDING You might be seeing this at your fills lately or clients may be letting you know that every extension has a lash attached to it (bonus, it should be like that the majority of the time). See that big long sucker? That’s one fill away from being gonezo. I’ve gotten pretty good at recognizing my clients lashes in terms of texture/colour and I notice when one is on its way out due to being at the end of its cycle, the base of it is noticeably lighter. I’m not sure if that’s a coincidence but it happens with every single person. If you look closely at the longest lash, you can see the base is a lighter colour than the rest of the lash, right? (Please tell me my eyes aren’t going😂) and this is where I’ve come to understand the lash cycle from a different perspective. With respect to my business, I let all new clients know that I require to see them every two weeks for the first 2 fills so I can better understand their lash cycle. I also do not let classic fills go beyond two weeks. Personal preference, too much growth can make them look crazy, quick. When it comes to obtaining new clients, they will always appreciate educated & sincere advice - not salesy advice. So, be honest with them. Let them know what to expect and if you have a policy, stick to it. If your fill schedule is strict, keep it as such but explain why. The clients who value you and your craft will respect those terms. Anyway, I went off on a tangent - as usual😂. PS; I’ll be releasing something exciting VERY soon. Can you guess what it is? Fixing Imbalance and Double Vision with an Occlusion Pupil Contact Lens! ▫️ Here is a photo of a patient of ours wearing a prosthetic soft contact lenses with a black occlusion pupil. ▫️ This patient had balance issues and double vision due to one eye having much poorer vision than the other eye. This eye had endured complications from a cataract surgery (the intraocular lens fractured in the eye) and after removal of these pieces, he had a retinal detachment and reattachment surgery. ▫️ These surgeries left our patient with distorted 20/50 vision, even with glasses, in this eye. ▫️ Even after trying to enhance the glasses prescription, he only found relief by wearing an eye patch over this eye. ▫️ We discussed that a prosthetic occlusion pupil might be a better option for him cosmetically and he agreed. ▫️ We fit him with an Alden black prosthetic pupil 6.5mm in size. He was very happy with this lens. He wears his glasses over his contact lens for vision and protection. ▫️ Any out there use occlusion pupils frequently? This is a LAST resort option for me but I am happy to create them for the right patient. - @eyesplain on Instagram
