A friendly reminder and warning for those of you with kids and dogs - It is September and the start of football season, but it is also the time of year when copperheads are born. The baby snakes are born with venom and ready to defend themselves. The mama snake generally gives birth to about 8 - 10 of these critters, so if you find one there are others around. The babies will keep those greenish/yellow tips on their tails for about a year. These snakes are not generally aggressive but will bite if you are unfortunate enough to touch or step on one. Do not reach under bushes, around rocks, or even flower pots without looking first. They like damp places so beware, even under childrens toys and dog dishes! - @lr_kids on Instagram

A new species of Wolfsnake of the genus Lycodon was discovered from South India. (Lycodon deccanensis sp.nov) Based on the taxonomic investigations of the unidentified Lycodon sp from Ganesh et al. 2018, a group of scientists lead by S.R.Ganesh him self,were able to correctly identify the taxon after 125 years. The new snake closely resembles Travancore Wolfsnake (Lycodon travencoricus) and was previously wrongfully identified as a one. Earliest known records dates back to 1891 where Sclater collected specimens from South Arcot, Tamil Nadu but misidentified as L.travancoricus. The new snake is currently known from the Deccan Plateau hence the name Lycodon deccanensis was given. The new snake also shows ontogenic color shift as L.travancoricus. it can be distinguished from the later by the combination of the following characters. subcaudals often undivided; loreal in contact with internasal; nasal not in contact with prefrontal; anterior genials subequal to posterior pair; supraocular usually contacting prefrontal; preocular usually not contacting frontal. With the description of Lycodon deccanensis, the authors have restricted the range of L.travancoricus to Western Ghats and Southern Eastern Ghats by identifying the previous specimens from outside the Western Ghats as Lycodon anamallensis and Lycodon aulicus. A revised key to the genus Lycodon from South India is also presented We, Sri Lankan Herpetology team, congratulate authors S.R.Ganesh, Kaushik Deuti, K.G. Punith, N.S. Achyuthan, Ashok Kumar Mallik, Omkar Adhikari and Gernot Vogel for this discovery and wish them best of luck for future works. کشنده ترین مار ایران نام علمی : Vipera lebetina obtusa نام انگلیسی: West-Asian blunt-nosed viper نام فارسی: گرزه مار پراکندگی (افعی گل گز ، افعی خاتونی ، افعی داوودی ، افعی سیاه ، افعی سلیمانی ) مشخصات : گردن كاملا مشخص ، سر مثلثی شكل با پولكهای ریز ، مردمك چشم عمودی ، پوزه گرد و پولك رسترال متصل به دو یا سه عدد پولك ، بین فاصله دو چشم 8 تا 12 پولك ،دور چشم 13 تا 19 پولك ، بین چشم و لب بالا 2 یا 3 پولك ، سطح پشتی تیغه دار و در 23 یا 25 یا 27 ردیف و سطح زیرین دم 32 تا 54 عدد ، پولك مخرجی منفرد . رنگ بدن متفاوت و بیشتر به رنگ خاكستری روشن یا تیره یا نقره ای متمایل به سیاه ، ساده و یكنواخت یا با خالهای متفاوت ، خالها گاهی به شكل دایرههای ناقص یا كامل متمایل به قرمز آجری یا زرد زیتونی همراه با خالهای كوچك تیره ،دارای خط پهن قهوه ای تیره در دو طرف گردن و به سمت قسمت خلفی چشم ممتد ، سطح پشتی بعضی نمونهها به رنگ قهوه ای روشن یا خاكستری با خطوط قهوه ای تیره و لكههای قرمز آجری ، امتداد این نقوش از ناحیه گردن تا انتهای دم ، سطح شكمی سفید یا زرد روشن و گاهی با خالهای سیاه و سفید . حداكثر طول 168 سانتیمتر ، دم 20 سانتیمتر . تغذیه از مارمولكها ،موشها ، گنجشكها و تخم پرندگان . زاد و ولد : تا 35 تخم در تابستان و اغلب تخمها حاوی نوزاد است . زیستگاه : كوهستانها ، لای سنگها و بوتهها ، تپه ماهورها ، علفزارها . انتشار جغرافیایی : قبرس ، جزایر دریای مدیترانه ، شمال آفریقا ، خاورمیانه ، كشمیر ، افغانستان ، بلوچستان ، زیر گونه (Obtusa) ابتوزا از ناحیه قفقاز تا لبنان ، شوروی سابق (داغستان ، مناطق مجاور قفقاز) تركیه ، عراق ، ایران ، پاكستان و شمال هند انتشار دارد . پراكندگی : استانهای آذربایجان شرقی و غربی ، اردبیل ، زنجان ، مركزی ، تهران ، كردستان ، همدان ، لرستان ، كرمانشاهان ، خوزستان ، اصفهان ، فارس ،گیلان ، مازندران ، گلستان ، خراسان ، سمنان ، قزوین ، قم . - @world_of_snakes__ on Instagram

I remember this Nerodia!🐍What can he tell us about urban wildlife? 🤔 . Ive been going through old pictures for a paper Im finishing up and this Banded water snake (Nerodia fasciata) brought me right back to the surveys! . In fact, he actually was the last individual found during a 6 month span of surveys at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary near downtown Houston. . This little 17 acre plot of land is surrounded by highways, housing, and mimosa laden brunch spots. . But damn does it have an impressive amount of herps! 🐍🐸🐢🦎 . Combing information from surveys and iNaturalist, we concluded that a total of 24 species of herpetofauna could be found on the property . From Narrow-Mouth Toads to Nerodia, this little urban sanctuary serves as an enclave for wildlife in the middle of a bustling city. . So why dont other parks have this amount of wildlife? 🤔 . Well a big reason is that the park was left as natural as possible. Dirt trails criss cross through a forest of native plants. . A team of community volunteers are constantly on the property caring for and keeping it a sanctuary for wildlife. . On top of that, staff members who were awesome and passionate for nature filled the site. . Honestly, that little park serves as a fantastic model for how nature can still exist in the middle of a city . And think about who that affects. . Sure, the wildlife have a safe place to call home, but also the nearby human residents gain so much. . Kids who grew up in a concrete jungle now have immediate access to Nature and wildlife. . A community is built around the park, but also within it. Volunteers care for trails, plants, and animals during their free time. . Edith L Moore serves a fantastic role in the age where we become more disconnected from nature. Where its easier to not see a wild animal for weeks on end.
