This was the location of Dr. Alvin DeWitt Wadsworth’s sanitarium which he ran from 1904 until his death in 1941. Little information was previously available on Dr. Wadsworth or his sanitarium. Although we couldn’t find an image of Rudyard Kipling with his ayah - we know from a variety of sources that he had one who he was close to. Rudyard Kipling mentions her in his posthumously published autobiography, Something of Myself (1937) - “Our ayah was a Portuguese Roman Catholic who would pray—I beside her—at a wayside Cross.” 🌹 According to other sources, when Rudyard was born in 1856, his delighted grandparents in England received a carte de visite photograph of baby Rudyard, showing him asleep in the lap of a dark-skinned Madras ayah, an upright, dignified woman, with a bare head and thick black hair coiled on her neck (Birkenhead, 1978, p. 11). 🌹 According to psyartjournal.com In 1985, psychoanalyst Harry T. Hardin persuasively argued that alienation between infant and biological mother may result when a close bond develops between an infant and its early primary surrogate mother--nannies, nurses, maids, or relatives. To end the surrogate caregiving is usually a trauma for the child; the development of interpersonal difficulties, in particular fear of intimacy, is one of several consequences of the loss of the substitute mother. Rudyard Kipling was known to have many temper tantrums and outbursts as a child having arrived to England from India, were a result of “first traumatic separation” from his ayah. Charles Williams Dec 31 1959 from QPA Queer Photo Archive of @jenniolsonsf For sure this is the best haircut of the week — the newspaper accounts of the time even pause to remark on this classic 1950s ducktail. This handsome hero went by the name Charles Williams while passing as a man: “Through about 25 states and at least four jails.” The newspaper stories of the time give us a sense of what Charles was navigating — reference is made to psychiatric help being suggested, followed by the seemingly forced reply, “I have no desire to be boy.” In one lengthy news story the parents are interviewed and although they are generally sympathetic they express the opinion that, “Barbara is a very mixed up girl… We want her to find herself.” Photos #1 & #2 are the original wire service image (the wire service 8 x 10 combines the two mug shots from the Golden, Colorado Jefferson County Jail), #3 is the November coverage of an initial arrest in which it sounds like Charles will return to their previous identity and then #4 reveals yet another arrest in December which leads us to suspect this is not just a passing phase. It’s not clear that this amazing person would have necessarily identified as butch. Tho we also don’t know they would have identified as trans in our contemporary understanding of that identity either. In the spirit of that wonderful uncertainty, here’s to opening up a space of common ground and shared experience in all our unique gender brilliance. Humble beginnings, this is Ka sohs big sister Swee Kee restaurant thats currently located on 96 Amoy street. This shop house used to be along Chin Chew street, the government took the land back to build the currently, Far East square. Back in the day, Swee Kee used to operate from 5:30pm to 5am. Many would come after a night of drinking for a nourishing bowl of fish soup. And many Hong Kong stars such as Andy Lau, Jackie Cheung would come after their concerts for a hearty meal. US postage stamp. Scott #2838h (1994) World War II - Road to Victory Red Ball Express By August 1944, it was clear the Normandy invasion had been a huge success. Pursuing quickly retreating Germans, the Allied troops had come within 100 miles of Paris. However, the armies faced one basic problem - they had outrun the supply lines linking them to the Normandy beaches. Unless the Allies could bridge the gap separating the supplies in Normandy and the troops, the Germans would have a chance to regroup and Paris would be lost. The solution was the Red Ball Express. Given the railroad nickname for a high-priority shipment, this long-haul supply system operated over a one-way set of roads to deliver bulk supplies each day to Patton’s and Hodges’ Armies. When the express began on August 25th, it provided 75 tons of supplies per day. As the pursuit continued, the effort was expanded to include 5,400 trucks carrying over 8,200 tons each day over round-trip routes of up to 686 miles. By mid-November the critical need for emergency long-haul operations across northern France was over, and the service was disbanded on November 16, 1944.
