At @bigrenovationsanddesign and @oshawaframersmarket , we focus on properties that need BIG support, but more importantly, we focus on preserving our buildings history and legacy. On todays #flashbackfriday, were taking it back to 1958, with a story from Bev Gordon; one of RBCs former employees. As you now know, the Oshawa Farmers Market building used to be the old RBC building. 62 years ago, Bev started her job at RBC in our #27simcoe building. Bev tells us all about the charm of the old building. Back in 1958, the building was considered one of the most modern buildings of Oshawa. Ironically enough, despite its modern architecture, the physical building had its fair share of struggles. It was so old that Bev tells us a story of a mice that used to run up the stenographers leg. There was also a hole in the basement that caused nearly 2 feet of flooding. Every morning, a messenger would come up and fill the ink trays in order for the nib pens to be used by the customers and much more. This is just one of the many stories weve heard about our building. We love the idea that were able to showcase the history of our buildings, as the legacy of Oshawa and its people is very important to us. #flashbackfriday #history #rbc #stories #downtownoshawa #oshawafarmersmarket #staytuned - @oshawafarmersmarket on Instagram

Robert Hooke was #onthisday in 1635 in Freshwater, Isle of Wright. Hooke was a Surveyor to the City of London and, in partnership with Sir Christopher Wren, created the design of The Monument, which took six years to be completed, from 1671 to 1677. Hooke worked with Wren on the design of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Montagu House in Bloomsbury, and the Bethlem Royal Hospital. They were keen astronomers, which is why The Monument was built to also serve as a Zenith telescope. 🔭 Hooke died on 3 March 1703. No authenticated portraits of him survive. 🔗 Click the link in bio to learn more about our history. ©London Metropolitan Archives, City of London. #TheMonument #OTD #GreatFireOfLondon #CityOfLondon #History #Heritage #RobertHooke #DrRobertHooke #SirChristopherWren #London #LondonTogether #OurCityTogether #VisitLondon #VisittheCity #LondonArchitecture - @visitthemonument on Instagram

One of our surviving historic treasures is the Kerckhoff Marine Lab in China Cove. While it became a Marine Lab when it was sold to Caltech, it was originally designed as a boat and bath house for the short-lived Balboa Palisades Club in 1926. The club ran into financial difficulty while it was still being built and they ended up selling it to Caltech in late 1929 for $50,000. The lab was acquired with funds donated by William G. Kerckhoff, a California businessman who made his fortune in power and gas. #cdm #coronadelmar #cdmhistorical #chinacove #kerckhoff #marinelab #ochistory #socalhistory #caltech #uci - @cdmhistorical on Instagram

500 artifacts from the Homestead’s collection are now online as part of the L. A. as Subject Community Histories Digitization Project, which aims to increase access to stories about underrepresented groups in the Los Angeles region from the late 19th-early 20th centuries. Thanks to generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the @usclibraries have digitized portions of numerous regional collections for this project. Among the items featured from our collection are an 1863 Democratic party poster written in Spanish and a 1928 photo of the black-owned Hotel Somerville, later the Dunbar, a key center of African-American life in Los Angeles. #TBT to 1955 when the Country Club Line went right through Brookside. You could ride the streetcar line from Waldo to downtown and back through most of the 1950s. Runners today can thank late Missouri Senator Harry Wiggins for securing funding and conversion of the streetcar line into what we call the Trolley Trail today.
