COVID19 online school year at @svanyc has officially begun, and the first assignment was given to both of my senior portfolio classes today. What’s the assignment, you ask? It’s an illustrated film poster of any film of each student’s choice. Because, if you have been paying attention, illustrated film posters are all the rage right now. And this is, after it has been dead and went into Photoshop headshot montage chaos hell for at least 20 years. We are finally getting out of the film poster dark ages. And, at this time and age, there are in fact illustrators who make a living by making film posters. How cool is that? We want our students to not just get better at creating art, but also well informed about markets and business knowledge too. Thank you @blackdragonpress and my agent @atrbute for filling me in on business details to pass onto the students today. COVID19 school year sure suck, but at least let’s try and find ways to take advantage of this online semester. 🔥👊 we got this! I can’t believe I’m writing this. I don’t even have the words to express my sadness. Nei giorni scorsi due libri di testo delle scuole elementari sono finiti al centro delle polemiche per lutilizzo di frasi e immagini razziste. Nel libro “Le avventure di Leo” cè una pagina dedicata ai desideri dei bambini per il nuovo anno scolastico. Tra questi, cè limmagine di un bambino nero che pronuncia la frase: «Io volere imparare italiano bene». Nel racconto “Una nuova amica” del libro “Rossofuoco”, invece, un bambino bianco incontra al parco una bambina nera e, considerandola un’aliena, le dice: «Sei sporca o sei nera?». ⠀ Gli editori hanno promesso di eliminare le immagini e i riferimenti, mentre le autrici de “Le avventure di Leo” si sono giustificate dicendo che il loro intento non era discriminatorio, ma di mettere in luce una realtà presente in molte classi: bambini stranieri volenterosi di imparare la lingua italiana. ⠀ Queste giustificazioni ci lasciano molto perplessi. Innanzitutto, perché la multiculturalità nelle nostre classi non si può certo ridurre a un colore della pelle, a un’etnia o a una nazionalità. In classe abbiamo bambini che provengono dai cinque contenenti e quindi ritrarre un bambino nero come esempio di straniero è uno stereotipo abusato e discriminatorio. In secondo luogo, sono ormai tanti i bambini di seconda e terza generazione che sono nati e cresciuti in Italia e che quindi considerano litaliano la loro madrelingua. ⠀ Queste raffigurazioni sono non solo anacronistiche ma anche offensive e rischiano di radicare nei bambini lo stereotipo di “nero” come “straniero” o “sporco” e quindi “inferiore”. La scuola dovrebbe essere lo spazio in cui le disuguaglianze sono sconfitte dalla cultura, il posto della libertà di pensiero per creare dei cittadini che aspirano a creare una società più giusta e inclusiva. August 12, an interesting day today, my 31st wedding anniversary - had my husband survived - and this week marks 5 years since his passing too. Two days away from my grand daughter Amaya Joy’s first birthday, my beautiful water birth girl, who blessed her Mimi midwife as she slipped into my eagerly waiting hands a year ago, on her due date no less! This week, where a confluence of events and memories, life and death, are etched on the souls, and deep in the hearts of my family. Today I slowed down long enough to contemplate and wonder how would my life be different, how would it be the same, what would I change... what could I change? And as the evening drew near I rushed out and voted, because while I never really got a clear answer to my own questions today, I know that the questions yet to be posed are the ones I will still have a chance to address. I know that whatever comes next, however it presents, I will face it and keep it moving, because just when you think you are at rock bottom God shows you a way, and reminds you of your purpose. We are in the midst of observing Black August here in Hawaiʻi, a month of reflection and building initially spurred by the death of Black Panther George Jackson, killed on August 21, 1971 during a supposed escape attempt from San Quentin Prison. Jacskonʻs death and other momentous August events point us to a long history of resistance, resilience, and reaffirmation of our humanity in the face of ongoing violence. Today, we are in grief over the death of Julian Henry Heyward III on Maui earlier this month. Like many, we were stunned by the news shared by his family recently and are working to learn more and do more to support them at this devastating time. His son wrote of him in a public Facebook post: “He was last seen on the 5th and found on August 10th at his home in Maui. My father was the nicest, kindest, and sweetest person to all that knew him. He had his faults (like everyone), but he overcame some very big hurdles in life. He didn’t have many possessions (a minimalist) but had a wealth of family that loved him dearly.” The case is currently under investigation by the Maui Police Department, but we do understand that Mr. Heyward’s difficult housing situation due to financial hardship brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic was likely compounded by anti-Black racism. Several days after being reported missing, Julian Heyward was found hanged on his lanai. During this pandemic and uprisings in North America, our Black community in Hawaiʻi has reported more and more racist aggression, violence, and threats of violence. Please look out for each other. Community members across Hawai’i are lifting up Julian Heyward’s name and calling for a thorough investigation into his death. Folks are demonstrating on Maui and across the pae ʻāina and individuals are engaged in a letter writing campaign to MPD and the county prosecutor. They remain on parole until the year 2078. Right now I’m juggling helping my parents secure decent housing, telling their story through a film project and trying to help them get free of 58 years of parole. While helping my parents, I’m working on “Mumia Abu Jamal Street.” Of our imprisoned MOVE family members Mumia Abu Jamal is the last man standing. Since as long as I can remember, we’ve been working to bring him home. I’m on a mission to raise more awareness about his fight for freedom in the form of renaming his childhood street from “7th and Wallace” to “7th and Mumia Abu Jamal Street.” Mumia has been unjustly imprisoned since 1981 and suffers from ailments that could take his life before he ever makes it home. All of my work is geared towards supporting freedom for the people that sacrificed their freedom for us. For my birthday I’m asking you to make a donation to support my continued efforts.
