Bringing this old crop into the new market is not only ecologically beneficial, but also has positive connotations for indigenous weavers. Local, hardy, trouble-free, Kala cotton is the ultimate textile crop that is relatively drought resistant and chemical free. Native to the Kutch district, this pure cotton is easy to grow and maintain. While it requires low resources, it yields high quality textiles. The fabrics produced by Kala cotton are highly utilized as they are durable and tenacious, while remaining soft in feel. Kala cotton has a twofold potential as it takes circular social inclusivity into account as well. As it is a fuss-free crop, the farmers are not preoccupied with its cultivation, nor must they deal with unhealthy chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This old world cotton also sustains our proud artisanal traditions by providing jobs for handloom weavers and ginners. It is with great and deep sadness to share that Lifespace will not be reopening it’s doors. Lifespace was a vision and a dream, to bring together community and healing in a safe space that focused on slowing down in the fast pace of the city. A place to retreat, unwind and be. We were a small business with a tiny team and yet so much Love. We shared together so many tears, laughter, joy, frustrations and magical happenings within the space. I witnessed so much individual growth happening within our small team, clients and within myself too. It was a gruelling two years to make this dream come to life and one of much blood, sweat and tears behind the scenes away from Lifespace’s well known calming environment. Running and operating a new, small business was never easy and even less so in these unprecedented times. I want to take this moment to thank each and every one of our community that brought this space to Life. That helped carry this space, and to all of you who brought your magic and medicine here. To all of you who shared some of your healing journey with us. We will miss you all. The cycle of Life, of destruction and creation, continues and the vision grows. Ho’Brah: A prelude to describing something intense or amazing. (American surfer slang adopted from the Hawaiian ‘Pidgin’ language) When the small fish market on 87th Street and 3rd Avenue in our hometown of Bay Ridge became available our first instinct was: ‘TACOS!’ We thought long and hard about what we loved most about tacos. ‘Bright flavors’ and ‘fresh ingredients’ were popular choices and soon morphed into ‘healthy lifestyle, summer, sun, and surf’. We shared tales of favorite taco joints we’d visited on Vacations around the world; small taco trucks on the Mexican border in San Diego; wood-paneled surf-taco joints yards from the ocean in Florida; oversized taco emporiums in Hawaii; and one truly shanty fish shack turned taco stand on the Gulf Coast. Neil Madden is a long-serving volunteer at the Southland Sports Car Club. Neil is a licensed Scrutineer and Technical Officer. He says he started volunteering when he started his mechanic apprenticeship because he enjoys helping people understand the regulations and how they keep them safe. Neil loves motorsport and wants to continue to help further the sport in any way he can. Like many of our volunteers, Neil used to compete in motorsport for several years across race meetings and ClubSport sprints and hillclimbs. Neils favourite driver is 1979 WRC Champion Bjorn Waldegard and his idols are Julian Leach and the late Ian Snellgrove. With cold weather approaching (sigh) and being indoors more, I decided it would be a good idea to offer some of my paintings as downloadable colouring sheets! 🎨 My vision as an artist is to help others be creative and find inspiration, and I hope these colouring sheets do this. There are only a few illustrations for now, but I will be adding more in the following weeks. Order the fried green tomatoes! 3. Cafe on Ralph— They are now delivering grocery goods that include: Veggie box, fruit box, dry goods box. 4. Halsey and Lewis Records—A hidden treasure of a record store. They are still open and will let a couple people inside at a time (although, if youve ever been before, you know not many more people can fit anyway) 5. Corner Grind— Another great place to grab your coffee if you live closer to Bedford Ave 6. Bed-Vyne Wine and Spirits— Two words: WINE DELIVERY. 7. Seasons neighborhood nursery— Need more plant babies? We LOVE this little nursery. I know its a little early for this, but this is where we get our Christmas tree! 8. Geoff has been part of the Wandas Arts Awards since its beginning. Like the years before, hes grateful to be recognized and nominated. Art is in my blood. My mother attended OCA (now OCAD University) in the 50s. My one sister a visual architect and cellist. My father was a civil engineer. I am a musician. I play the drums. But after highschool in 1975, I made the key decision to go to OCA. Now at age 65, Homes First has provided for me the last 10 years a safe, off the street home. As an individual who has never married, no children, best friends recently deceased, I’m case to the winds.
