I used to be afraid to spend time with friends. I wasn’t afraid of it in the sense that I feared people or would get social anxiety. I feared it because I saw having fun as being ‘unproductive’ or ‘lazy’ (when I could/should be working, researching, leveraging my career, etc. if I wanted to be successful). Sound familiar? I don’t think I’m an anomaly for thinking like this. Our society breeds glorification of a nonstop grind and work ethic to reach the highest possible level of success. But at what cost? Having strong relationships with others in life is strongly correlated with many health benefits. Research indicates a 50% increase in longevity, stronger expression for gene immunity, lower rates of anxiety/depression, higher self-esteem and empathy toward others, better emotional coping skills and overall higher perceptions of well-being with high levels of social connectedness. Being socially connected to others may very well be a fountain of youth and health that’s being suppressed by a toxic ‘grind culture’ that results in toxic work habits, and not necessarily much more success. ‘Grinding’ 24/7 doesn’t even necessarily guarantee any type of success, and certainly denotes in when it comes to optimal health. Isn’t the point of being successful in life to achieve a certain level of happiness and fulfillment anyways? Isn’t that the deepest reason behind anything we do? When you give attention to those who matter, your life will become MORE meaningful, your hours spent working will be more productive and the work you do accomplish will be more fulfilled. As the saying goes (and will keep taunting you for the rest of your life), everything in moderation. It’s okay to prioritize things that you need or want to get done sometimes, even if it means hitting the gym before a social gathering or eating something different than others when you spend time with loved ones. No matter your fitness goals, it’s NOT okay or healthy to neglect the people in your life. They are more important and deserve better. You deserve better. It’s okay to have fun. It doesn’t make you less deserving of success or make your work ethic weaker. - @nirvanafit on Instagram

Here are a few thoughts (spoilers below): Watching episode 2 was… exhilarating, surreal, devastating. Even though I “know the story,” I still found out new nuggets of what transpired between Mark and Bonnie. I was heartbroken watching what Bonnie went through. All I can say is that we all should be so grateful Bonnie was strong enough to finally trust her gut and leave. Ultimately, it was her choice to act out of love, and to never give Mark an ultimatum. That choice sent a ripple effect throughout the community. Bonnie is my hero. Mark was able to wake up and guide me out and lead with love also. It was wild for me to listen to the conversation he recorded between us where you can literally HEAR my choice point between either throwing Mark under the bus to Lauren, or telling him the truth. #Cliffhanger. Pasadena Mennonite Church participated with other churches this morning in a worship service across the street from Adelanto ICE Processing Facility. This facility has been known for terrible conditions (Google it). This was not a protest. There were no signs and no chants. We did not come on ICE property. We prayed, read liturgy, mourned and took communion. I (Pastor Tim) have many thoughts about the events that took place and the ICE contractor’s retaliatory response. You can ask me some time. Nous avons regardé des films - oh, l’étonnant Lion’s love (and lies) d’Agnes Varda avec Viva - et de vieux documentaires sur la ville. Et puis il y eut l’océan à Malibu, les dauphins aperçus à Venice Beach, les canaux tranquilles et leurs maisons rangées comme des jouets dans une vitrine, les coyotes entendus à la tombée de la nuit dans Griffith Park, l’odeur des séquoias. Il y eut aussi les conversations et la sensations de deuil après la mort de Ruth Bader Ginsburg, les questions, les doutes, la colère et la certitude qu’il fallait continuer à se battre. LaCalifornie est entrée dans nos vies par toutes ces petites portes, ces désirs sans cesse renouvelés. La lumière qui s’invite à la fenêtre où je travaille à mon roman.
