Seaweed: what is it good for? As well as being a foot tickler, seaweed plays a crucial role in our oceans by:​ .​ 👌 Absorbing significant amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere​ . 👍 Providing habitats for marine life, ranging from playful sea lions to sponges and small fish​ . 💪 Reducing the negative effects of ocean acidification by removing CO2 from the water column​ . 🤘 Protecting coastlines from erosion caused by storms and rising sea levels​​ .​ Demand for seaweed is increasing, not only as a food stuff (eg 🍣) but also as a fertiliser, farm animal feed, and a component in cosmetics.​ .​ While seaweed is abundant, grows quickly and doesn’t need to be fed, it is vital for our oceans that seaweed is harvested sustainably.​ .​ Last year, the MSC released our joint standard with @ascaqua.nl for sustainable and socially responsible seaweed production. The worlds first seaweed product carrying the fish tick is now available in Korea. Did you know 94% of plastics in the ocean are not visible because they sit below the ocean surface? Plastics such as HDPE, LDPE and PP have a density less than seawater, allowing them to float. On the other hand, single use plastics (PET, PVC, PS and PLA) have a higher density than seawater causing them to sink. Over time, algae and marine life attach to the floating plastics, causing them to sink into the depths of the ocean.
