This ongoing research focuses on the ambiguity and opacity that mark new technologies, media and our digital world, linked here with a contemporary take on alchemy. Inspired by the opus alchemicum and chemical-physical reactions of minerals, we developed a simulacrum based on one of the shapes generated by our trained generative model. Definitely my sharpest point yet. As far as I know, this stone is serpentine, and for whatever reason, this piece got significantly sharper on the edges than any I’ve made before. I really like using slate because it is so available, and I can often get it to split into thin sheets that make it easier to shape, but I think this is a superior material when it comes to ground points. The downside is that it is a lot harder to work with, as it doesn’t break predictably so instead of splitting it, I have to peck it down with gentle taps with a hammer stone and grind away the rest. This means that it takes significantly longer to make a point than with slate, but it’s more impact resistant, and the edge on this one is unbelievable. I mounted it up in one of my cedar arrows using pitch glue and stinging nettles to secure it in place. 『則明作 握鋏』 井上則明さんは 握鋏の一大産地である 播州、兵庫県小野市で、 現在では数少ない 付鋼造り（つけはがねづくり）の握鋏を 作りつづける職人です。 昭和の握鋏3名工の１人、 井上又次を父に持ち、 その技を継承しました。 利器材*を一切使わず、 伝統的な付鋼造りの握鋏のみを制作。 鉄の丸棒に鋼を沸かし付け 握り鋏として完成させるまで すべての工程を一貫して行っています。 則明作の握鋏は 掌にスッと入り込み、 ばねは強すぎず、柔らかすぎず。 刃の合わせも、刃元から刃先まで 軽く心地よい調子に整えられています。 また、刃を両側から押したさい、 行き過ぎて指を怪我しないための ストッパーとなる、段と呼ばれる部分にも 鋼付けをほどこし、 段が潰れないよう、 長く使い続けられるよう、 作り上げられています。 長時間連続しての使用でも疲れにくい。 長期間愛用しつづけられる。 『道具』としていちばん大切なことを キッチリと備えているのです。 特筆することとして、 見目の麗しさがあります。 全体を見て、刃を見て、仕上げを見て、 また全体を見る。 造形が美しく、眺めていて飽きません。 木屋で扱っているほとんどの道具は、 機械で自動的に作ることができません。 一部機械化しているものでも、 多くの場面に職人さんの手が入ります。 ですので、どんなに均質を目指しても 作り手の手の個性が幾らかずつ 確実に反映されます。 なんとなくキレイになったり 面白くなったり、朴訥だったり。 手がけた人の造形の力が表れるのです。 則明作の鋏は、端正です。 地金と鋼の鍛接部は衒いなく、 受け継がれた技を目で見ることができます。 刃部の形成ももたつかず、 胴から刃の先端までが滑らかにつながります。 連綿と受け継がれた技術と 井上則明という現代に生きる 人の手があってこそ現れた名品です。 *利器材…あらかじめ鋼と地金を接合し、 荒く形作るところまで加工してある金属製品。 現在ほとんどの握鋏は利器材を使用して作られる。 鋏の需要が増え、考え出された分業制の一形態です。 ------------------------- 握鋏はばねが利く作りなので 洋鋏と違って 使うたびに刃を開く必要がありません。 そのため糸切りなど細かい作業を 連続して行うのに向いています。 （もちろん、ふつうの鋏なので お裁縫以外にもいろんな用途で使えます。） ばねが効くためと考えられますが 使用中に、刃の合わせが互い違いになる、 というお問い合わせをいただくことがあります。 品物をお預かりして 作った職人さんに見ていただいても 互い違いにはならないと言うし、 しかしお客さまは また合わせがひっくり返った、とお持ちになる。 一体何が起きているのだろう？ と疑問に思っていました。 社内でも、使うと 互い違いになってしまう人と ならない人があるので よくよく使い方を観察したところ、 互い違いになるのは、 鋏の刃元より下、 胴の両側面を持って動作させる場合でした。 親指と人差し指で鋏の胴を押す持ち方だと 鋏に対し指の力によるコントロールが効きにくいため 開いたときにばねの反動で 刃元のわずかに重なっている部分が 互い違いになりやすいのです。 互い違いにならないのは 刃元の両側面付近を押さえて 動作させる場合です。 このあたりに指を置くようにすると、 押して、開いたときの反動を 指先でコントロールしやすく ばねの反動でもともとの開き以上に 刃が開き、互い違いになってしまうことを 抑えられるのです。 鋏職人さんは、 刃元を持つのが当たり前だったので 話がかみ合わなかったのかもしれないと思いました。 刃が互い違いになって困っている方は 鋏の持つ場所を少し上側にずらしてみてください。 刃の実際に使われる（切る）場所と 指が近くなるので 繊細な動きもしやすくなります。 おためしあれ！ （ｈ） 【写真】 則明作 握鋏 長さ：約105㎜ 重さ：約18ｇ 価格：19,800円 【研ぎについて】 木屋江は取り扱い鋏の研ぎを承ります。 サイズ、鋼材により修理代金が変わります。 お預かり期間は時期、店舗により 少しズレがございますのであわせて お気軽にお問い合わせください。 （鋏によってはもともと研ぐように 作られていないものもあります） 取り扱いのないものに関しては 大変申し訳ございませんが お預かりをしておりません。 - @nihonbashi_kiya on Instagram

Been a minute since I worked on a Bowie knife so I went in on this one. Brass infused carbon fiber, brain coral center split, brass liners and spacers and some really nice Hawaiian curly koa from @rockinblocks. Fluted serpentine arrowhead. There is some debate among archaeologists as to why this feature was used by the people that came to be called the Clovis culture. The way I understand it, it was so widely used among that culture and absent from others that it’s essentially diagnostic..meaning that if you find a point with a center groove, it is a Clovis point. I am far from an expert on any of this, and I know some of you are, so please correct me on anything I get wrong. As for the why, I’ve seen articles that suggest that it somehow made them more impact resistant, while others focus on the artistic aspect. @huntprimitive has a great video where he shows that it may have been used to be able to stick the point into a split stick, rather than having to remove material from the shaft to accommodate it. The first time I ended up with a fluted point was an accident. I was grinding one side and a big chunk chipped out of the middle, so I ground out the other side to make it match and was immediately reminded of the clovis points. When I went to mount it, I noticed that I didn’t have to remove nearly as much material from the arrow shaft to fit the point, which I saw as a benefit when using the somewhat weak western red cedar that I make my arrows from. It made good sense to me, that by removing some material from the center of the point, I could leave more of the wood in place, and end up with the same narrow profile. The stone is much stronger than the shaft, and I still left plenty of thickness in the groove, so I believe this ends up being a stronger configuration. On top of this, I also noticed that as long as the flutes line up well enough with the tip of the point, they essentially lock it into the shaft like a Lego piece, taking out the eyeball straightening and occasional point drift that happens if I’m not careful. It could in theory make the shaft more likely to split, but I tend to put a lot of wrapping behind my points, so I don’t expect that to be an issue here. It does take ten to fifteen minutes and a careful eye to grind the grooves, so it is more time consuming; but if it makes for a stronger connection, it’s probably worth it. - @nwprimate on Instagram

Its been a busy time in the shop! Between orders and side projects there just hasnt been time to post. Now with several blades done, I can post for days! . First up is the knife that sparked a run of Sparrows. My far better half @ally.boschman asked for a little EDC blade to match the keychain I made at Christmas for her. No problem! . It is made from 1/8 80CRV2 at ~60HRC with an acid stone wash and at 6.25 total length. Her custom Sparrow features thick pink g10 liners with black paper micarta handles, stainless steel pin and tube, and of course the matching bead and lanyard.
