Week 6 of farm boxes at the Grey. We are up to 600 boxes of produce, proteins, and dairy for employees at The Grey, the Grey market, and other restaurant workers in Savannah. It’s the overwhelming highlight of the week to continue comradery with coworkers and see familiar faces once a week. Lots of drinking is involved as well. Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. Like you, our customers and community, New York Distilling Company is grappling with how to recognize the protests going on all around us, and how to make a positive difference. We’re a small company with limited resources. We don’t pretend to have particular insights on the big picture – we make gin and rye— but we love our community and its diversity and feel the desire and need to be purposeful and attentive. Within our industry, a tragedy occurred last Friday. Du Nord Craft Spirits, located in Minneapolis on the same block as a police precinct, was set on fire and then deluged with 400,000 gallons of water from their sprinkler system. The damage was devastating. Du Nord is one of the few minority-owned craft distillers in the United States, co-founded by Shanelle and Chris Montana in 2013. Chris, the immediate past President of our national association, is one of the most respected and admired leaders of our industry. We cannot lose his voice and presence. This week we are thinking of Shanelle and Chris and directing our efforts toward helping their distillery recover. We are making an initial donation today of $1,000 to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the American Craft Spirit Association, which you can find below And we hope to do more. Help us support Du Nord. Either donate directly to the fund or buy our spirits. Because of strange, frustrating and anachronistic NY State Liquor Authority regulations we are not allowed to say things like “all profits” this week will be donated. We are not allowed to specifically tie a percentage donation, or a ‘dollars-per-bottle-sold’ donation to a particular charity or cause. So we won’t. Indigo Arts Alliance is proud to have partnered on the 754 Congress St. Art Installation project titled Counting from Thirteen, our Black is Beautiful street mural and helping to document his George Floyd mural in downtown Portland. Follow his page at @ryanwritesonthings to follow his upcoming projects and check out his artist statement below: Ryan Adams is a Portland Maine artist, born and raised, where he lives with his artist and designer wife and their two daughters. His background in traditional graffiti led him to creating large-scale mural work as well as hand lettered signage. His signature ‘gem’ style of work is a geometric breakdown of letterforms with shadows and highlights embedded within, to create depth and movement throughout the pieces. His pieces tend to be bold, colorful and clever; often including statements within. These statements can be literal or figurative, but often bringing attention to a social or cultural issue. Ryan’s mural work is driven by the desire to bring representation to often overlooked members of the community along with making the arts more accessible to everyone. Currently, Ryan co-owns and operates a hand painted signage business, designs for a brewery, paints murals all around the country and exhibits his work as often as possible. On a beautiful day, we would load up our van with our amazing youth and head out on an adventure. Unfortunately, due to the current situation this is not feasible. Instead, today we are grateful to supply 200 at-home nature kits in collaboration with our partners @bgcdorchester @bcyfcenters to bring nature to the kids who need it most. We sincerely thank our donors, supporters, volunteers, and outdoor mentors that made this a reality. We still have 50 more kits to distribute and we look forward to seeing what our youth create. Were going to miss your silly faces out front of the bike shop, but heres the plan: There’s just too much uncertainty to think we can find a date and safely hold the Ten Thousand event. This year we are posting the route up as a solo ride challenge on Ridespot.org. Why Ridespot? It’s from the fine folks at People for Bikes and we really like them, everybody likes them, plus they use your rider data to improve cycling. Once you set up a Ride Spot account you can join the challenge. You can use ride spot to tell a story about your ride, and share pictures. We want to hear all about your ride. As always, its self-supported. The route passes through two different towns where you can get supplies but if you have a mechanical or run out of food no one will be out there to help. Please overpack and overprepare! Run a little bigger tire, take an extra water bottle, bring those extra tools. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN! The ride does NOT start in Freeport, it starts at Joe Westwood Park 331 W. South St Pearl City IL. It’s beautiful in the Driftless, take your time, take lots of pictures. Make your social media posts public so we can share. Use hashtag #ridetenthousand. Just to double verify you completed the route email your ride data to stu@freeportbicycles.com and email with any questions. At the end of the challenge period we will draw names from the finisher list for some sick prizes! Prizes are not for fastest, just totally random male and female from the finisher list. I woke up this morning and it was raining hard on my tent and I was so happy because it made the smoke go away. I got into the food truck business recently as I was looking for something new to do that could make me good money, offer me the chance to work for myself, & tap into some of the experiences Ive gained while working in various industries. Originally I was thinking about a cinema pub & was going to name it Georges Reel Brews, but redirected my energies to a food truck as I had some prior restaurant experience & the start-up process was easier with a truck. I looked around Portland and realized that no one had a good, solid North Shore Mass roast beef truck, & I was also sick of driving home to get one... Im from the north shore... so that was the motivation behind the truck. & George is my dog, his name was going to be in whatever I tried! So far every day has been an adventure... lots of challenges you dont think about. I had a maintenance issue the other day that could have been a major deal but a regular actually stepped up and was able to help me out. WE MADE IT ACROSS THE DESERT ALIVE ! We spent seven days riding our bikes through the desert 🌵 with temps hitting over the 100 degree mark, a total of 420 miles and actual vultures on the side of the road . Fueled by PBJ’s, water, @clifbar @maurten_official and nightly ice baths and a blast from the @hyperice gun to get ready for the next day. I’m so thankful that we are able to pay it forward. With your help we will be refurbishing a safe place @bridgetoskate for the kids to skate and to be kids. @skatelite will support the project and @keenramps will be doing the repairs.
