My heart goes out to Paris after yesterday’s devastating fire. I made this image the day after the 2015 terrorist attacks. On the night of the attacks, fellow friends and artists were having dinner at the oldest restaurant in Paris, the famous Le Procope, which opened in 1686. Our Fotofever exhibit at the Carrousel du Louvre had just opened and were were ready to celebrate. We were about a mile from the attacks, but news spread fast via text from friends in the US (thanks, @meghandler) who told us what was happening. The waiter took one of our phones into the kitchen to show the staff, and they quickly locked the front door. The next day, all of Paris was basically shut down, except for a few places, including Notre Dame Cathedral. I made my solo trek to the top, and as we mourned for those who lost their lives by brutal terrorists, the presence of the cathedral’s protective gargoyles brought solace and hope to many. Marine Drive & the automobile, 1953. Archival pic from “Our Bombay,” a Dec. 1953 publication by Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) in which Prime Minister Nehru wrote: ‘A city, like a house, is not a mere collection of steel and brick, cement and mortar. It is the outward expression of the life of a community’. Marine Drive with 35 consecutive Art Deco sea facing buildings was the road to be on. The automobile brought speed, power, streamlined design, mobility and symbolised both success and affluence in a modern aspirational city. In these pics @karlbhote tells us we see a mix of primarily English and American cars. Convertibles were already falling out of favour, confirmed by only one seen at the bottom right, likely a Sunbeam Talbot drophead coupe. Since this is the pre Fiat Ambassador days, we see mostly foreign cars - majority of which were assembled in India. Ford had large scale assembly operations in Bombay. General Motors had similar operations in Sewri where Buick (retailed by Metro Motors), and Chevrolet cars (retailed by The Bombay Garage), rolled out. Dodge and Plymouth cars were assembled at Premier Automobiles Kurla facility, and retailed by The Bombay Cycle and Motor Agency which still stands at Sandhurst bridge. Across the road were the stunning modern Deco showrooms of Dadajee Dhackjee & Co, agents for Packard and Mercedes-Benz cars, at Shree Pant Bhuvan. The English were represented by Morris cars, sold by the French Motor Car Co. at New Queens Road and Hillman Minx cars were assembled by Automobile Products of India (API) at their Bhandup facility. Austin cars were sold by The Automobile Co. Ltd, also at New Queens Road. Pileta en la Plaza de Independencia A mediados del siglo XIX, se decidió remodelar completamente la plaza. Esta tarea se le encomendó al ingeniero Pascual Binimelis, que proyectó un gran monumento que iría al centro de la plaza, rodeado de jardines, y que sostendría la estatua de la diosa Ceres, símbolo de la fertilidad agrícola. De la gran columna nacen cuatro imponentes faroles de hierro, y en la base cuatro sirenas soplan sus caracolas que surten de agua a la fuente. Esta obra fue fundida en Liverpool, Inglaterra, bajo la dirección de Augusto Bleuze. Una de las curiosidades que hace particular a esta pileta en Chile tiene que ver con el escudo nacional que lleva impreso, ya que no lleva el tradicional huemul del símbolo patrio chileno, sino que en su lugar existe un león heráldico (aunque parece más un caballo). Es creencia popular que esto se debe a que el encargado de realizar la pileta, al mirar el diseño que le enviaron, no conocía al huemul, por lo que concluyó erróneamente que se trataba de un caballo. Realmente a mediados del siglo XIX había bastante libertad en la realización del escudo patrio pudiéndose ver con distintos animales en variados objetos como banderas, estampillas o monumentos, este mismo escudo, con el caballo esculpido, se puede ver en el Teatro Municipal de Santiago e incluso en el carruaje presidencial visto para el 18 de septiembre. El estanque de agua que rodea a la pileta fue esculpido en piedra rosada por Alejandro Strange, en San Rosendo. El nuevo monumento y la renovada Plaza de la Independencia fue reinaugurada en abril de 1856. This photo looking north on the bridge shows the then-new @bcplacestadium about six months after it opened. The bridge closed in November 1984, to be replaced by a new bridge at approximately the same location.
