Remembering my Dad, James C. Verdun, today for his service in the Vietnam War. He served in the Air Force and was an iconic military photographer that risked his life hanging out of helicopters and airplanes flying at treetop levels to get classified (secret mission) photos on the front line. . He was killed in a horrific car accident in 1980. My son @ianverdun was born in 1985 and looks so much like him that I am blessed to remember him every time I see my sons face. . In commemoration of the legacy that Black women suffragists have left us we have selected 10 women from the archives who worked tirelessly to give ALL women the right to vote. The women above were doing the work, and fought to be in rooms wherein both white women and Black men disregarded their presence. They were purposefully and systematically excluded and when August 18th, 1920 came around these women along with dozens more only reified their determination to make sure their right to vote was secured. Thank you to them! The best way to thank them is to register to vote if you haven’t already. They dedicated their lives to this work and many of them died before they could see what their lives’ work amounted to. Voor iedereen die zegt “het bestaat niet hier in Nederland, het is hier heel anders dan in Amerika.” Ja, misschien, maar nog steeds is het er zeker. Ik ben vanaf m’n twaalfde beste vriendjes met Willem geworden, Wim. Toendertijd zag ik niet eens per see dat ie een andere kleur had en wat dat betekende. Toen we ouder werden heb ik het steeds vaker meegemaakt. Met de hele familie op vakantie. Alle blanken uit de familie mochten doorlopen bij de duane. Willem en z’n vader werden aangehouden. Ons eerste optreden op Lowlands, een pracht moment! Jaren hadden we hier naar uit gekeken. Na de show stonden we op het veld en kwamen er veel fans naar ons toe. Ineens werden mijn twee donkere vriendjes Willem en Fanny aangehouden door undercover politie, omdat ze “drugs aan het verkopen waren.” Ik mocht natuurlijk gewoon weg lopen, want: IK BEN BLANK! Of gewoon in het dorp op straat lopend vanaf het station op een zaterdagavond. Niemand lastig aan het vallen en dat er ineens een groep van 10 blanke boeren langs fietst die uit het niets “KANKERNEGER!!!!” roepen. Uitgaan met Willem die zich maar achter mij verschool terwijl ze aan mij vroegen “is dat nou een neger?” Vechten op de kermis, want ja...niet blank zijn op een kermis is reden genoeg voor ruzie, toch? ZEG ME NIET DAT HET NIET BESTAAT. Je weet niks. De miljoen keer dat we bij een restaurant geweigerd werden terwijl er niemand binnen zat, omdat het “volgeboekt” was. Mijn ‘donkere’ vrienden liepen rustig weg, maar ik zal het nooit vergeten, godverdomme. Hoe veel gezeik kan iemand mee maken die gewoon mijn vriendje Wim is?! ❤️ - @bigtwee on Instagram

Robert E. Roeder of Summit Station, Pennsylvania, was a Captain in the @usarmy and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II on this day in 1944. Roeder joined the Army in 1936 from his birthplace of Summit Station Pennsylvania and served with Company G, 350th Infantry, 88th Infantry Division. On September 27th, 1944, during the defense of Mount Battaglia, Roeder repeatedly encouraged his men and directed their defense against the enemy. The next day, he was injured by shell fragments and carried to the company command post. He refused medical treatment and dragged himself to the door of the post and fired his weapon at the attacking Germans while continuing to lead his men. He was killed moment later by an exploding shell. For his actions on this day, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Roeder is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. He was 27 years old at the time of his death. We are eternally thankful for Captain Roeder’s service to our country. This is Ruby Bridges. The first black child to integrate an elementary school in 1960. In this photo, she is being escorted to class by U.S. marshals because mobs showed up to taunt and threaten her. I’ve loved school with all my heart since the day I set foot in a classroom. I learned of her story when I was about the same age as she is in this photo. It never escaped me that I missed her fate by just a few decades. I can’t stop thinking about how she feels right now because she is still alive. Ruby Bridges is only 65 years old. This was not that long ago. Many policies and practices that lead to state sanctioned violence against Black people are thriving. We’ve come so far and yet we’re nowhere near where we need to be. I’m so glad many of you are speaking up about BLM and about wanting to be a better ally. Maybe you’ve been in the dark because many racist practices became quietly insidious instead of actually disappearing. But you’re taking action now. Which is great because I really need Ruby Bridges to live blissfully on a private island somewhere instead of carrying the torch of a movement she’s been fighting for since she was 6. 📌 Last thing—I keep seeing some version of this recommendation going around: “do not bother your black friends, they are tired and shouldn’t need to educate you.” Partly true but we are not that fragile. Also, tiptoeing around and studying us like you’re in a museum is really weird. We can’t learn from one another if we don’t engage. The late Milton Lockett, Jr., the Army’s first African-American Ranger Instructor and beloved Columbus activist, was honored with the unveiling of a new display in the National Infantry Museum this past week. Family members, friends and community leaders from both Columbus and Fort Benning attended the ceremony at the museum. Master Sergeant Lockett joined the Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War and two tours in Vietnam. In 1959 he became the Army’s first African-American Ranger instructor. After retiring from the Army, Lockett took his fight to the streets of Columbus, where drug dealers were turning once safe neighborhoods into crime zones. “Up with hope, down with dope,” was the catch phrase fellow activists chanted on their marches. He organized neighborhood watches and was recognized by Columbus City Council in 2007 for his work as President of Columbus Against Drugs. Today, marks 65 years since the murder of EMMIT TILL. He was a 14 year old boy who was kidnapped, beaten, mutilated and murdered by two white men. He was falsely accused of “whistling” at a white woman. The two men charged with his murder were acquitted by a jury who deliberated less than an hour. Before her death, the woman who accused him admitted she lied and recanted her story. Some believe Emmits murder was the true catalyst for the civil rights movement in america. To understand where our country currently is, we have to understand where it’s BEEN. Today in washington, thousands have gathered to march, to protest, to demand racial justice and police reform. For as much progress our country has made, the current pain and desperation and exasperation of so many citizens should motivate us all keep pushing. We believe in heroes. We believe in mentors. Mike Tysons mentor was an old Italian iconoclast and genius, Cus DAmato. Mentors give advice for life. But, every great life starts by mastering the day. Under Cus tutelage, a typical training camp day for Tyson was as follows. CALISTHENIC ROUTINE 200 sit-ups, 50 dips, 50 push-ups & 50 shrugs with weight – 10 times throughout a day, six days a week. DAILY SCHEDULE AT TRAININIG CAMP(FOUR TO FIVE WEEKS BEFORE A FIGHT) 4:00 a.m.: get up and go for a three to five mile jog. 6:00 a.m.: come back home, shower, and go back to bed. 10:00 a.m.: wake up and eat breakfast (Oatmeal with fruit, OJ, and vitamins, washed down with a protein shake.) 12pm: ten rounds of sparring and three sets of Calisthenics. 2pm: lunch (carbs, protein, veggies, and water.) 3pm: another four to six rounds of sparring, bag work, slip bag, jump rope, Willie bag, focus mits, and speed bag (Cus was never fond of the speed bag) and 60 minutes on the stationary bike. Three more sets of Calisthenics. 5pm: Four more sets of the same calisthenic routine and then slow shadow boxing or focusing on ONE technique, in order to master the mechanics. 7pm: another balanced meal, usually prepared by Steve Lott. 8pm: a light 30 minutes on the exercise bike for recovery purposes only. NO RESISTANCE. 9pm: watch TV or study fight films and then go to bed. Cumulative reps for the day = 2000 decline sit-ups, 500 bench dips, 500 push-ups, 500 shrugs with a 30 kg barbell, and ten minutes of neck exercises in the ring. A native of the island of Jamaica, Firefighter Johnson grew up in Brooklyn as an All-City football player at Boys and Girls High School. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 1984 and played one season for the team before spending the next in the Canadian Football League. Firefighter Johnson was appointed to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) on January 16, 1994, and served his entire 10-year career in the quarters of Ladder Company 35. Someone just liked this post on my profile from October 2016, which was actually a very difficult time for me due to personal and business issues. I was knocked down to the floor mentally and physically but bouncing back out of it was all about doing basics right and building a ‘balanced wheel of life’ which could spin with vibrancy.
