Sometimes you meet someone and you instantly feel that you are going to be friends with that person for the rest of your life. I felt that when I met Laurie. She was an aspiring artist in her last year of college and expressed interest in exhibiting and working on projects and soon after she became apart of our team and family. Laurie Tobia was a bright, compassionate gem of a person who had a great passion for friends, surfing, travel and expression through art. Every person that I have known to come into Laurie’s life has only grown to love her. I’ve always appreciated Laurie’s surfer style laid back, no worries attitude. No matter what was going on around you; if she were present you instantly felt a sense of contentment and peace, and you were usually laughing a lot. She was never afraid to be silly and had a great sense of humor. She greatly cared about the people around her and it always showed in her actions. If someone were having an amazing day or had a great accomplishment she shared that joy as if it were happening to her. If someone were trying to hide sadness or discomfort Laurie would also read those feelings. She was very in tune with people’s emotions and would be quick to try to cheer them up. I’ve always admired Laurie free and adventurous spirit. She was always down for spontaneous projects, adventures, road trips across the country... She’s expressed how she would love to continue to travel the world creating art wherever she landed. Laurie was very special to many people. She was like a kid sister and a dear friend to me. My heart is crushed for her, for her friends and for her family. I’m wishing all who knew Laurie love, patience and my sincere condolences through this challenging moment. The memories of our projects, adventures, road trips, our friendship will always be with me and it is within her expression thru her art that she also leaves us behind a legacy that will live on. ❤️ - @roddywildeman on Instagram

🌿 M2 FOCUS STRATEGY 🌿 & forest app giveaway! Second year of medical school so far has been so much more productive and efficient than M1 for me! While I know everything shifting online has provided more time, I’ve also learned a few new things to help me be more effective with my studying so I have more time outside of school! 🍁 One of the main changes I’ve made is having a detailed list written before my day starts about exactly what I need to get done during my study session rather than a broad “study biochem” on my calendar. 🍁 I’ve also been able to FOCUS a lot better on the material in front of me rather than worrying about creating a poster or writing an IG post or thinking about other tasks by segmenting life into “study time” vs “productive non-study work” and “veg out time” and it’s finally helped me stay on task. 🍁 Additionally, to maintain focus I take many mini-breaks throughout the day and walk around/make food/clean my apartment! 🍁 & my favorite change has been using @forest_app!! It helps me with my other goals as well by forcing me to get off my phone and take breaks! 🍁 One of my favorite parts about forest is being able connect with friends. You can “plant” trees in your virtual forest with friends where you’re all studying in the same ‘room’ 🌳 The reward system is also awesome, by studying for a certain amount of time you earn virtual coins and can get new tree species or save up coins to plant a REAL tree! Remember, we are all really just monkeys 🐒 who need rewards to be motivated and for those like me trying SUPER hard not to online shop or order take out every night, virtual planting is a great reward. Семь лет назад в 2013 году я впервые отправился на остров Маврикий для того, чтобы фотографировать виндсёрфинг на больших волнах. Мы застали и самый большой прогноз десятилетия, и чуть не разбились на лодке, и спасли утопающего... ⠀ Тогда же я близко познакомился с @seva_shulgin нет, конечно, я и до этого знал, что Сева- это главный виндсёрфер нашей страны, но после той поездки и чреды других я узнал его как человека. Не самого простого, со своим характером, но что у него точно нельзя было отнять- так это видения того, как и куда должен он сам развиваться и куда за ним пойдёт спорт, образно говоря. В те годы Сева начал много времени уделять классическому серфингу и, как следствие, благодаря упорному труду и большому желанию, проделал свой путь до знаменитой волны Jaws на Гавайях, став тем самым первым русским, прокатившимся на ней. Кстати, он снял об этом фильм «На Волне»🤙 У нас с Севой отношения всегда складывались по-разному, но в этом году ему исполнилось 50 и мы решили организовать прямой эфир с ним во время карантина и я понял одну вещь: о тебе могут говорить и хорошо и плохо. Но главное- это то, куда ты идёшь и что ты делаешь. И вот Сева, возвращаюсь к своим словам, настоящий визионер и уже даже легенда отечественного спорта. ⠀ На этой неделе он рассказал, что издаёт книгу о своей жизни, о 25 годах, проведённых с океаном. И я крайне советую пройти к нему или ко мне в сторис и заказать один экземпляр себе. Потому что его опыт уникален и он выходит за рамки спорта. Его книга (я читал отрывок) про жизнь, про то, как ты можешь кайфовать, поймав волну, а через секунду тебя размажет о рифы действительности. Days after the province announced a new provincial approach to old-growth forests, conservation groups are blowing the whistle on plans to log more than three square kilometres of intact rainforest north of Revelstoke, destroying endangered southern mountain caribou critical habitat. While B.C. quietly advances plans to log the old-growth, the province is trumpeting spending of more than $33,000 to restore caribou habitat nearby. The B.C. government is taking two steps forward and three steps back by attempting to create habitat while also obliterating old-growth habitat that caribou have been known to use. It’s a net loss. The government is sabotaging itself and caribou, not to mention wasting taxpayer money, by logging right next door.” On the ground investigation from Wildsight, Echo Conservation Society and the Wilderness Committee in the Argonaut Valley has revealed the planned logging will destroy a large area of primarily old-growth rainforest, with massive cedars and hemlocks over 50 metres tall and many hundreds of years old. This comes right after a provincial review of old-growth forests found that a paradigm shift is necessary to manage B.C.’s old-growth forests. The authors recommended 14 steps to preserve the remarkable old-growth found in the province including immediately deferring logging in old forests where ecosystems are at high risk of irreversible biodiversity loss. Argonaut Creek is one of these areas where biodiversity and old-growth forest is at risk. The rainforest in the Argonaut Valley is an incredible place, with giant ancient cedars. B.C.’s interior rainforest is a hidden ecological jewel along the eastern edge of the province, but we’re letting it slip away to logging. This rainforest is critical habitat for endangered southern mountain caribou, which have recently disappeared from the southern part of their range in the Kootenays after two herds were lost in the Purcell and Selkirk mountains. It’s been a bit difficult not being able to see my athletes in-person this year at races or training camps or see my own coach. The cool thing about triathlon coaching though is how much you can accomplish online! We get it done through FaceTime, phone calls, texts, and emails. We’ve found ways to improve technique from afar with video analysis and live Zoom training sessions! A beautiful end to an incredible date with my guy. Spent Sunday morning with a 4 am wake up and headed down to the American River (which is literally in our back yard right now) to watch the sun rise. Just the two of us. I found the perfect spot to hang the hammock. So relaxing listening to the birds welcome the sun. Being an observer to the natural harmony of life, reminds me less is more. My heart is full. Can’t wait to do this again @ao.images. Leave no trace. Tread lightly and quietly.
