This photo I took of a washed-up Coke bottle went viral. Like the kind of viral where every ocean conservation non-profit around the globe featured it on their Instagram accounts. Sights like this are sadly not uncommon, even in some of the most remote places on our planet. So the story goes I stumbled upon this bottle at the high tide line in Mexico after surfing untouched waves without another human in sight, and it’s an image that will be forever imprinted in my memory. Random fact: I met @captain.backfire back in Manila, in a hospital cafeteria while we were on training. He eventually got a post in A&E while I took a job in the Surgical-Oncology unit. 3 years later, he encouraged me to apply for a job in England just as he did. We both relocated in the summer of 2016 and so it’s been about 4 years since. He still works in A&E and now I’m in Intensive Care. We both worked through the COVID-19 pandemic. Collectively, we’ve seen just about every horror scene you can possibly imagine in a hospital. Time flies but we’re still great friends, matching outfits and all— 7 years and counting.💙 P.S. A lot of people are currently changing jobs, making moves, or simply pivoting their businesses. Change is so hard, especially when it comes to your job. I decided when I was 15 I was going to be a university professor. Got through undergrad and 4/5 years of my PhD program before I realized I would never be happy as a university professor. Id started this random blog thingy and decided that after graduation, I would try to do it full time. I, of course, had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I have never regretted making the change. I get frustrated with this job, but I would have been miserable if Id stayed my previous course of being a professor. If youre in a place of change, I highly recommend talking out and typing out your thoughts. Where do you want to go? Here are some of my favorite apps for editing: ~ Lightroom (some paid features): I use the mobile version for quick edits like straightening/cropping an image, fixing color or adding presets. Some of my favorite presets come from @oneclickpresets and @jennakutcher ~ Facetune (most features are paid): No, I dont use this to make my face look like Kylie Jenner lol, but Facetune is super useful for fixing clothes when they are wrinkly, changing backgrounds and removing unwanted items from backgrounds. It’s over 100 degrees in LA today, which is literally deadly for people without access to shelter. The city is doing next to nothing to protect its unhoused residents, so it’s falling on all of us to help however we can. One really easy way to help is to freeze some water bottles and drop them off at encampments near you. It costs less than 10 bucks, takes about 15 minutes out of your day, and could save someone’s life. Bukan soal berapa kali kita jatuh... ... tapi berapa kali kita mampu bangun dan bertarung kembali. Tahun ini Kakak telah mengikuti beberapa program seleksi masuk PTN, dan hasilnya Kakak diterima di dua fakultas favorit di Universitas Indonesia. Tentunya dia harus memilih salah satu yang benar-benar sesuai dengan cita-citanya. Tapi sebenarnya, tahun lalu Kakak juga pernah mencoba mengikuti beberapa program seleksi masuk PTN, tapi ternyata belum berhasil. Hal ini tentu saja membuatnya sangat kecewa. Kekecewaan yang wajar mengingat persiapan yang dilakukannya. Apalagi jika melihat teman-temannya yang berhasil diterima di perguruan tinggi yang diminati. Tapi dia tahu perjuangan tidak boleh berhenti. Dia punya waktu satu tahun untuk bersiap kembali. Kali ini persiapannya bisa lebih matang karena dia hanya fokus mempersiapkan seleksi masuk PTN. Ketika waktunya tiba, dia sudah siap untuk bertarung kembali. Dia telah memperjuangkan seluruh kemampuannya untuk menebus kegagalannya pada tahun sebelumnya. In art school, the dream was to make enough money to afford a space that was only for creating. The first time I saw this room it was a total disaster. The only thing recognizable to this image was the beautiful light streaming in through the windows. Before me it had been the same law office for over 30 years. There was one bazillion holes in the walls, the floor was completely raw in spots where a chair had rolled back and forth over and over and over. My boys were babies when I found it six years ago. I walked in that first time and saw the window and the water source in the weirdest little bathroom ever, and I got serious butterflies. I was completely smitten.
