Sterilization Sunday #9 went down this past weekend! It was a super successful day with amazing volunteers from all over the world. We reached the number of 22 sterilizations, 19 dogs and 3 cats and it was all made possible by the amazing @thepaws.co who sponsored the whole day! Interview with our very own @dpeterkimh ⠀ 1. How has it been as the youngest barista on bar at Kumquat? ⠀ It took some time to get acclimated as I had no prior knowledge about coffee or its culture. I was pretty intimidated at first because Kumquat has very high standards for quality and hospitality. I didn’t want to let any of the more experienced baristas or bosses down, but thankfully they’ve been very patient and understanding with me along the way. Over the past year, I’ve worked my way up from a trainee to, finally, a barista. Kumquat has allowed me to prosper as an individual and I would not be where I am today without the KQ family. ⠀ 2. I hear you are also passionate about golf, what about it draws you towards the sport? ⠀ Golf tests one’s abilities by seeing how well an individual can manage their strengths and weaknesses. That’s what draws me to the sport. Throughout my 6 years of playing golf, I’ve developed a love-hate relationship with the sport because golf requires a lot of decision-making and concentration. It was especially stressful competing for my high school/college teams because I didn’t want to let my teammates or coaches down. However, the people I’ve gotten to know and the experiences I’ve had made it worthwhile. Nowadays, golf is more of a hobby for me and I am grateful that it is something I can do while social distancing. ⠀ 3. What do you expect your life to look like five years from now? ⠀ It’s hard to visualize what my life would be like in 5 years time. However, one goal I have in mind is to be more confident with myself. I’ve always been self-conscious of what others think about me and I tend to just follow the flow of the majority. Laying a beautiful table is an art form. It comes in layers and every element really matters. Add in one too many things and it’s cluttered. Leave something out and it’s like leaving the house without earrings and lipstick. Pulling together all of these elements is easily my favorite part of the planning and I love making the puzzle pieces fit. This table called for a runner in just the right BLUE. A blue that takes in different hues from every angle. It needed to be just right to accent the handmade farm table from @fisherfamilyrentals, and the Marcella plate and gold flatware from @tacer_losangeles. So, @altflowers did what she does best and made the runners herself with hand-cut silk and vegetable dye. We added in those gorgeous gold candlesticks and mini pomegranates and BAM! we went next level with rustic meets refined. Whilst Jai was clearly humoured by my witty ways, I think that for me, the best part was seeing him eat a meal alongside one of his own creations. For most Florists, I would imagine this is quite rare. . I really enjoyed getting to know Jai. For once we were not running on event adrenalin, which meant our sentences were ten times more succinct and measured. He’s a rare talent who is equal parts creative, smart and funny. Qualities that will serve you well in our industry. . Although much of what we discussed will remain off-the-record, I will say that Jai has a unique eye that is a force to be reckoned with. Closing tiiiime! (Singing this ALL day!) Ive dropped a couple hints over the last few weeks, and today we officially close on our new home, a 150-year-old farmhouse Ive loved for more than two decades!! Youve seen this house several times on my feed (swipe!): our finalization announcement was taken out front, my brother and sister-in-law were married here at the beginning of quarantine, I took a self-portrait in the front yard last summer, weve taken both Christmas card portraits AND head shots here, and hosted three workshop styled shoots on the property of this gorgeous white farmhouse with a green tin roof. My parents bought the house five years ago and its been a JOY to see them live in the home I had loved looking at every time we drove by when I was a kid. Seeing them so happy inside its walls was literally the best scenario in my mind...until we started house hunting and they brought up the possibility of selling it to us (they’ve since settled into another gorgeous Victorian home a few blocks away!). It still doesnt feel real- we moved in a month ago and walking around the creaky hardwood floors is a thrill. Sitting on the wraparound porch in the evenings, pulling weeds from the garden as Felix digs in the dirt (this kid LOVES dirt), and talking about which projects we want to do first (we have so many!)... its a dream come true. I cant believe this is home!! Youll be seeing a LOT more of this house in the future- I cant wait to share the updates and renovations we have planned!! Had a great time in Maryville, MO at the first Mozingo Lake BBQ. Aaron and his crew did a great job with this first year contest. The festival was a great time and we got to be with a lot of our #bbqfamily this weekend. We liked our cook and so did the judges. We finished with 2nd place chicken, 11th place @prairiefresh ribs, 8th place PF pork, and 7th in @snakeriverfarms brisket for Reserve Grand Champion. 𝐈𝐏𝐀𝐃- I have a refurbished 7th Gen Ipad pro and I cannot imagine going through school with out it! 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑- As great as technology is, my paper planner is my favorite way to keep track of my daily to-do lists 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐖 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑- Y’all didn’t think you could make it though PA school with out coffee, did you? This one is on amazon for $21, It is super easy to use and makes great coffee! Swipe for how I really feel about it 𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐆𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐒 – When you are stuck staring at a computer for 12+ hours a day there really is no way around this 𝐏𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐃 𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐒 – Ft my dog that I am obsessed with. Sometimes its nice to look up from an anatomy power point to see the people that you love the most! 𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐁𝐎𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐒!!- I have two small white boards and one big one that I showed in my last post! It’s a great place to brain dump and to quiz yourself on what you really know with out wasting paper! 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐀𝐆 – If you have been following me you know that I got a diaper bag to use as my backpack for PA school and it has been AWESOME!! There are pockets for all of my equipment and insulated pockets for all of my drinks! 𝐅𝐈𝐓𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐄𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐏𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 – You don’t need equipment to have a good work out but if you know you like to work out with equipment make sure you bring some with you to school, you will NEED the mental break! 𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐏 𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐒 – does anyone actually make it through school with out @pance_prep_pearls !? 𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐍 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐈𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐘 𝟒 – I have heard mixed reviews about what stethoscope you should get but I absolutely LOVE mine! #MeetMeMonday . This photo doesnt match my grid, and its not my bright and romantic style...but you guys. This memory is forever with me. For days leading up to Dustins cousins wedding, Grayson asked me at least 1,000 times about dancing and eating cake. I was their photographer, but I am also family so for a portion of the reception, I put down my camera and danced with my boy. He was so tired. I mean beyond tired. But he got out there with me, and the look on his face was everything. When he asked me to pick him up, I could hear his cackle in my ear and his little arms around my neck, and I just love being his mama. Every single day he says something new that makes us belly laugh, and he genuinely loves Hazel more than he can possibly express. Sample to production - How our head roaster brings the Banko Gotiti to life: “We first got pre-shipment samples of the Banko Gotiti alongside several other Ethiopian samples back in February. It stood out on the table with its fruity aroma, round juicy body and black tea finish. We welcomed it alongside a couple others on to our list for the year - however there are a few things to be done before throwing it in the roaster, and turning up the heat. Now I ask myself - What do I want to highlight in this coffee, and how am I going to achieve that? Seeing as this coffee is naturally processed I want to highlight its big round sweet berry flavours, while keeping it balanced by maintaining its lovely mild acidity. Taking moisture, density and screen size measurements help us better understand the coffee in preparation for its first roast. These give us an understanding of what the bean will need, such as how much heat to use, how much green coffee to put into the roaster and what temperature to start the roast at. These decisions then affect the turning point, colour change, first crack, end time and end temperature. When we think its ready, after a fair number of cuppings and @V60s, we bag it up and send it out to you lot. Our baby girl is getting married this weekend! . The first time I met Alexandria I put her through hell. Honestly. I was working a wedding on a day it was 110 degrees with no AC (so painful) and this doe eyed little girl in heels was like, “I love weddings I would love to do what you do.” . I evil laughed to myself and said, “it’s not the glamor life you imagine but hey stick around today and you can help out to see if it’s for you.” . It was sticky, everything was melting, kids were running around in diapers, and guests were fleeing bc it was just unbearable. Alex, I had her picking up decks of cards at the kids corner that they destroyed. I had her moving out tables and stacking chairs. She kicked off the heels and that 5”2’ little thing got after it. . I thought she’s really green and she’s so young but DAMN that’s a hard worker! Quite honestly I was just barely holding on that day and she was a life raft. It was only my 3rd year at that point and she was the addition to the team I needed. . She trained twice as long as any other planner saying, “I want this to be perfect. Maybe I will shadow and train on one more before going solo with clients.” That sealed the deal! She cared so much for people she didn’t even know that she was willing to sacrifice her income to be her best. She was a people pleaser. She was a me pleaser. . I think I border line scared her for a few years with my intensity but she developed into such a focused, professional, organized, and unapologetic version of herself. I love it. I love her. . I’m so thrilled she a part of MB, I’m thrilled she about to be MB family for life as a client, and so pleased I’ll be there to assist her through it all this weekend. We love ya little one! I haven’t been on here in awhile. Pushing pause on this small business made sense when all my weddings postponed until 2021 (I still had the opportunity to be a part of some gorgeous elopements and am excited to share those with you). I’ve been grateful for the time to re-evaluate and will be changing it up. One thing that is long overdue... During this pause I’ve had a lot of time to educate myself, listen, and grow. There is much in this world that is dark and heavy for many people. I am a fixer and felt overwhelmed because I didn’t feel like anything I could do would be enough to affect any sort of change. But! Just because you can’t do everything doesn’t mean you can’t do something. If we are going to change our country then we have to start with our community. There are many beautiful organizations in this community that are already doing the work and affecting change within our town. One piece of this business that will change moving forward is that I will be giving a percentage of my profits each month to a different non-profit organization that is already doing the work. . . . . . . We have a 1 year old. Whoa. . It would be fitting that this boy’s first birthday would occur during a pandemic considering how difficult it was to bring him here. But he is resilient. As is his Mother. And the show had to go on. It was just a much smaller show than we would have liked. We would have loved to have all our friends and those closest to us there but we landed on our immediate family only, all trying our best to practice social distancing and even eating at 4 different tables. What a wild time to be alive. . I can’t seem to grasp how the time slips away. A few days turn to months and those moments turn into a year. It’s been such a trying and joyous adventure with him. But being a dad has quickly become my favorite thing about myself. I love waking him up and starting each new day with our little buddy, as he waves at me, with a multitude of binkies in his hand as I walk into his room. . We’re grateful to a Father in Heaven for letting us be his earthly parents. And it was a joy to celebrate His son on this same day, to celebrate His life and resurrection. Midnight Boil happens to be our very first American Porter we’ve ever made. It’s 5.5% ABV, but has tons of malt richness, nuanced roast, and a subtle smokiness and sweetness from the maple syrup we used post-fermentation. This is the third employee-designed beer weve made this year, and all three have been 5-6% ABV dark beers. Clearly our production staff sees a hole in our lineup, and theyre filling it with creative, fun, and well-executed beers. Cheers to Mike for brewing a winner thats right on time for Fall. I needed to take a bit of hiatus from social media to focus on life, but I have finally come to the realization that my life nor our world are going to calm down anytime in the near future. So instead of waiting for things to feel more normal, maybe continuing to go about my day is the best way to keep calm and give my life some sense of normalcy? The final #SurvivorSaturday of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth is very special because its one of our own! Lauren Peyton was treated at #MSKKids, our pediatric program, when she was fourteen and is now a Clinical Nurse IV at #MSKMonmouth. She was first diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and later had myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. Lauren needed a stem cell transplant and was matched with a donor from Germany. They were able to meet in person and are now close friends who text every day and even have matching tattoos to symbolize their connection! Lauren was inspired by her own nurses to become a nurse. She said, Every day I’m really grateful for everything MSK has done for me. Having that support behind you as a patient inspired me to provide that to people.” Lauren also added, What COVID has taught us, and what being a survivor has taught me, is that you can plan as much as you want but you cannot control what happens. My Dad and I would compete at the Fresno Safari Archery shoot every year, among other competitionstions. We had a practice range set-up in our backyard. 💬 I have a knack for gab. You should know that I am a super sentimental person, especially when it comes to kitchens. In fact, the first blog I ever wrote for The Overflow was about kitchens throughout my life. In this particular kitchen, I tested recipes for a friend’s cookbook, made 8 different meatball recipes in one day, baked countless cookies and sliced more than my fair share of watermelon. It’s been a magical place to play with food, sustain myself and feed others. I’m moving on to my next home though, and my next kitchen (don’t worry, I’m still in @columbiasc). Hey there! It’s been a minute, so allow me to introduce myself: My name is Jenna and I am the photographer and owner of @jennavioletphotography. I first picked up a camera when I took a photo 101 class in high school. I learned to use my grandfather’s 35mm film camera, unspool my film, and develop my photos by hand in a dark room. I’ve had a camera in my hand -even if it’s a phone camera, ever since so I can capture life’s memories. It wasn’t until college when my friends started to ask me to take their grad photos with their cap and gowns that I started to seriously consider making my passion into a business. What makes me love photography isn’t just the act of taking photos, but the relationships and connections I develop with others. I take immense pride in being able to share in my clients’ most joyful moments and providing them with a way savor those memories for a lifetime. My hope is that as we begin to embrace this new normal and things start to open up, we can get back to celebrating life’s milestones with each other in person, and saving these memories for a lifetime. HAPPY FRIDAY: Choosing brand colours can be a tricky one, I will say though it is important they reflect your brand key words. Brand key words are 3-5 words that sum up your brand aesthetic and you can use these as a foundation for anything designed for your brand. For example for my brand they are: fresh distinctive delightful dash of luxe So whenever I create something for my brand, website, newsletter template etc I can ensure they match the above criteria to keep it on brand. I have done some study around colour psychology via @thebrand_stylist and this is the ultimate branding tool for connecting further with your audience. I know that the New Year is a great opportunity for reflection. A time to think about the year gone by; of the accomplishments achieved and the opportunities missed. To recount both the good and the bad of the past year. To set big goals, dream big dreams and plot out big new plans. But sometimes there’s no New Year’s resolution, no big work goal to hit, no personal shift to make. Sometimes it’s just about today. Being really happy where you’re at and being very ok with that. Sometimes the New Year is just a reminder that there will always be an opportunity for a fresh start. hey friends! happy friday! figured i’d do a little #fridayintroductions post today since i have been terrible about posting on instagram lately! 1. i drink my coffee, tea, and iced tea black, but i also love a good flavored latte when it’s not too sweet. hazelnut is my favorite. 2. i have an office in my house but for some reason i find myself to be most productive here, at our kitchen table. 3. usually there’s a record player on that brass piece behind me in this pic. i have thrifted all my records but some of my favorites are bill joel, james taylor, john denver, and willie nelson. 4. i have secret pin boards to plan each year’s fall and holiday decor, but lately i’ve been less inclined to buy seasonal decorations and use more natural elements to embrace the seasons. this doesn’t, however, stop me from wandering the aisles of hobby lobby, though. 😍 5. i put my succulent plants outside this summer and they have never been happier. they’ve all tripled in size and i am going to have to repot them all again soon. nc is basically tropical this time of year i guess. that’s all i got. do you have any favorite old records/albums? tell me below! 👇🏻 📸: @erikapackett - @bloomingbranchcreative on Instagram
