Yep 2020 has been quite a year and its not over yet. For those who don’t know I currently live in Melbourne where we have the longest and most intense lockdown in the world. Luckily I live in the country so I have had more freedom than most. Nevertheless it’s been a challenge. Amazingly I’ve had some pretty amazing things happen this year regardless of the chaos this virus has created. Guess what?!⠀ ⠀ We got our faces in our favourite magazine @peppermintmagazine!⠀ ⠀ And here’s why we are so bloody proud!⠀ ⠀ This month we are celebrating 3 years of Betsy & Francis!⠀ ⠀ Like the start of most small businesses, it hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing.⠀ ⠀ 1st year we were both working full time trying to learn all the skills needed to run a small biz.⠀ ⠀ During evenings and weekends we would learn marketing, sales and spend most of our time googling “how do you get clients”.⠀ ⠀ The second year we decided to leave our jobs and make a real go of it, we felt like we couldn’t get anywhere without all of our energy and time going into Betsy & Francis.⠀ ⠀ Shortly after this, we moved back to the UK for three months - we could no longer afford Sydney rent and decided to move back in with our parents to grow B&F from their kitchen tables.⠀ ⠀ After only earning $9800 in our second year of business, we decided to spend half our savings on the help of @ownerscollective , time was running out and we had our flight booked back to Aus, at this point we had no regular income.⠀ ⠀ In September last year we got our flight back to Sydney to collect our storage and drive it up to Byron Bay.⠀ ⠀ We were stressed, upset and terrified to move to a new place with no money, no clients and no friends. 😭⠀ ⠀ Shortly after we arrived into Byron, everything feel into place. You spoke; we listened. Last month we asked our friends and guests to complete a survey to help us learn what were doing right and what we could be doing better. First of all, thank you so much if you took the time to complete it. We received hundreds of responses and we read each and every one. Thanks also for all the kind words and support! As we analyzed what people wanted us to do better, there were two themes that occurred over and over again: 1. Use less plastic in our take out and delivery packaging and 2. Improve the online ordering experience. Well, we are happy to tell you that this week we are addressing both of those suggestions! Over the next few weeks, we are phasing in NEW packaging made from paper and compostable organic materials. Not only will these containers break down more readily when youre done with your meal, but we think they look pretty great too! And, as of today, we are rolling out a new online ordering platform through Toast! We spent a lot of time researching all the options out there and Toast seemed to be the most intuitive. While it may take an order or two for our regulars to become familiar with the new platform, we think youll find that its quicker and more intuitive than our old system. Hi it’s Gina from @stylecuratorau back again taking over Canberra Outlet’s Instagram account and today I want to share my top tips for styling raw or organic ceramics around your home (one of the big trends of the season I mentioned the other day).   Whether you want to use these on your bedside table, coffee table, in a bookcase or on any other surface area, try these tips:   1. Keep it simple: the raw trend has an overall minimalist aesthetic where objects are given space to speak. 2. Play with nature: combine other elements from nature into your styling, such as the crystal and foraged olive branches I’ve used. 3. Create styled arrangements in odd numbers: this provides balance to the eye so consider using 3, 5 or 7 objects (and be sure to mix up the height and scale of these). 4. Use a base to anchor the look: whenever styling smaller objects, a base helps to connect the pieces together. You could use a stack of books, tray or trivet. 5. I made a choice that scared me 6 months ago... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As our country first begun to move into lockdown in March this year, I watched most of my clients cancel as they (and I) felt the realities of the pandemic. We made the tough decision to close our Morris St. location for at least two weeks and today our Summit Ave. cafe follows suit. For now, we are going to keep the roast lab operating with reduced staff and hours, filling mail orders and making deliveries. We will also have a limited menu at our Addison St. cafe and have switched to take out only, serving all food in to-go containers and limiting the number of people in the cafe at any one time.
