I’m interrupting my transparency film binge for a quick appreciation of Portra 160. I’ve had so much trouble scanning and balancing Portra so I gave up and found solace in Ektar and transparency film like Provia. When I bought my new scanner last month, I began looking at new methods and workflows. I found one, new to me, that catered to negative film. I tried that method and this is the result! The best image I have produced on Portra in a long time! Though now, I’m hooked on the saturation of those other films and might not sway back just yet. I am from the South of England and was raised in both England and Japan (my mum is Japanese). 2. I currently live in Perth, Australia. I spent 9 years living in New Zealand, 2 years in Sydney and now we are in Perth. 3. My current favourite colour is a peachy, coral pink. 4. My middle name is Michiko. 5. I won an art prize at primary school for drawing a section of the Bayeux Tapestry in crayons 🖍 6. I have a large notebook collection. 7. I dislike blue ink ballpoint pens. 8. I studied textile design in the UK and specialised in weaving. 9. After graduating I worked as a textile designer in Shoreditch in London and then as a textile design tutor at a university in New Zealand. 10. I like: coconut ice cream, cats, winters. 11. Unreal. This book project has been about 14 months in the making with literally thousands of emails and phone calls, countless hours upon hours of research, shows and galas, 2 months of a rollercoaster campaign at the beginning of a global pandemic, designing/redesigning, files being sent and resent and sent some more, organizing, trial and error, fulfillment, shipping, etc The vast majority of this being as a one man team, with some assistance from a couple very exceptional humans. A truly daunting undertaking filled with overwhelming beauty. I love seeing you guys so happy with my book, I am not one to cut corners and feel very pleased with how it turned out! I now have books, prints, canvases, metals, skateboard, and shirts in over 90% of the United States including Hawaii and Puerto Rico, and I’ve sent some off to Europe as well! So so so amazed at the support and love from you guys, it means more than you know. I will indeed be doing another book at some point, but I don’t think I’ll be doing another run of Year One so once they’re gone, they’re gone! A portion of all of the proceeds will be going to the Utah nonprofits @saveourcanyons and @greatbasinwildliferescue, I love what they stand for with keeping the wilderness wild, preservation of these beautiful lands, and providing assistance to our animal friends out there. Hey guys, it’s me 🤍 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I haven’t posted in two months because I didn’t really know what to say. I didn’t want to just post fluff or be tone deaf to what’s been going on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s been a hell of a year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So many external factors have been testing us. And as a small business owner that relies on the wedding & event industry for all of my income, it’s been very challenging since COVID hit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s been a test to the strength in all of us, and it has no doubt been a roller coaster of emotions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m normally the upbeat, bubbly and always silly & sarcastic girl. But, it’s been exhausting. Overwhelming at times where I just break down. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s been a scary season, but it’s also made me grow immensely in the past 4 months. More so than I probably do in a normal year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve learned how to pivot, how to navigate this new “normal”, and how to keep trying & pushing through the grittiness even when it’s really hard. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On top of it all, I’ve faced some hard things personally and it’s been part of a huge shift. I’m evolving and transforming to be more resilient and being more okay with who I am and what I believe in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A process that really sucks right now, but in the long run I’ll be happy about standing for what’s right. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I will no longer hold space and chase after those who don’t give you space in their lives. Or those just wanting surface-level relationships. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ll no longer be apologetic for being too caring or sensitive. Life is just too short to act like someone I’m not. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have a big heart, and those who are close to me know I’m a big giver. 🌟EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT🌟 After having talked about ‘Book 3’ for a while now, I am very excited to be able to share more details with you... THE ISLAND will be published by @orionbooks in June 2021! For the first time I have left London behind and headed to a wild and windswept remote Scottish island as the setting for this novel. It tells the story of two women, Lorna and Alice, and their teenage daughters Ella and Molly. Lorna grew up on the island but when she was a teenager turned her back on the place and its people for good. Alice is the sister-in-law she has never met, a yoga teacher and a pillar of the island community. Over the course of one summer old secrets will emerge and relationships will be tested and formed as Lorna returns to the people and place she once left behind. It’s a book about families, friendship, community and the meaning of home. If you’ve followed me for a while you might remember that over the past couple of years I visited a remote Scottish island myself - and in fact it’s where I got engaged! Well those trips inspired this book (swipe right for some pictures I took on my visits). If you enjoyed my previous two books then you’ll recognise some similar themes in this one but it’s also a bit of a change for me - a progression I hope. My mind and body felt crowed with noise, filled to the brim with self-imposed expectations and internal chatter that interrupted flow and ease. I needed to get out of my head and grounded in the energy required for presence, curiosity and stillness. I’ve been away (offline and out of town) for over a week and have a renewed sense of energy and the hint of a shift to come. Expansion feels near, and I know that requires letting go of something (or multiple things). Eliminate the non-essential to illuminate the vital has become my mantra. 💛 I’m excited to get back home and behind the camera! The boldest thing I’ve ever done was pursuing a life path that was completely reliant on something I was wellllllllll...not great at. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photography as a skill did not come naturally to me. I tried it on a whim in high school because I thought it would be fun, and it got me out of an afternoon of back to back science classes. I quickly fell in love and recruited all my friends to be models - but I sure as shit wasn’t destined to be the next Annie Leibovitz ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But at 18 I had all the confidence of someone who had never really faced the harsh realities and responsibilities of adulthood so all it took was one (overly kind) person to suggest this was something I should pursue, to make me reconsider the life in teaching I had previously been destined for. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did I know that I wasn’t the best photographer? Yes. Did I care? Apparently not. Why? Because I loved it. It was exciting, and I was passionate and decided that was worth the risk of failing miserably. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I took a chance on myself despite everyone around me telling me to reconsider & choose something more stable. While there were definitely times then (and now) where I was in way over my head and considered walking away, I chose to trust the gut instinct of 18 year old Ash and keep pushing forward. And LOOK - here I am 12 years later living the dream she was ballsy enough to chase. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So next time youre scared to try something because you think youll be bad at it, or because everyone else is telling you its a not the best idea - ignore it, ignore them and go with your gut. Be stubborn and ruthless in your pursuit of the things youre passionate about. Well, well, well. What a rocky week/year/minute it’s been/is? On Wednesday, I discovered I’d been scammed online ‘selling’ my first DSLR camera 😥 and then yesterday’s good news pulled me right back up. 🥳 An exhibition I’d anticipated for April 24 this year at @ohlorettawinebar is being virtually reimagined with a lil thanks to the support of my @broadsheet_melb fam. When was the last time you printed off your favorite 30 images from the last year and looked through them sans monitor? I encourage you to try it! To make sure this happens for my couples, I send out 25 preview prints within a week of your wedding so that the first time you see your photos, its like this... sitting cross legged on your bed, photos spilled out on your wrinkly comforter, new husband right beside you.
