**Do you want to have kids??** 👨👩👧👦 This weekend we did an Ask Me Anything in our stories just for fun, and we were really surprised when our response to this question led to a flood of DMs. So let’s talk about being childless by choice! 👶🏻 Despite being a labor & delivery nurse and an elementary school teacher, neither of us have ever felt a burning desire to have kids. We kinda assumed we’d have one someday (cause I guess you’re just supposed to, right?), until a few years into our marriage when we realized we were never going to get the travel bug out of our system and be ready to “settle down”, and that we LOVE our life just as it is (no lack of purpose, fulfillment, or family here!) 👶🏽 Unfortunately, our personal decision has brought us a LOT of judgment! Just a few of the things people have said to us (let’s be honest, more to Emily) when they find out we aren’t having kids: - You’re selfish. - Your life doesn’t have meaning without children. - You’re young; you’ll change your mind. - You’ll regret it forever. - I’ll pray for you to get pregnant anyway. 🤯 When we answered this question in our stories, we got tons of messages from folks who have faced similar judgment for being childless by choice! So we just want y’all to know: YOU’RE NOT ALONE, and IT’S 100% OK. 👶🏻 In fact, whatever reproductive choices you make are the right ones, as long as they feel right to YOU. And, spoiler alert: No matter what decisions you make, people will still judge you for it. No kids? You’re selfish. Just one kid? They’ll be maladjusted without a sibling. A handful of kids? Making the most of elderberries! Here I’ve used elderberries from France and elderberries collected from Shropshire to see if they are different. They have both been made with rain water which is soft water in an ongoing attempt to make a red that stays red as alkaline seems to push it purple. But also im on a quest to make all the possible shades I can from one main ingredient. I’m sharing here to thank YOU. ****** Extract from my story (read in images above) ‘And as we arrive at 200 days at home I feel an overwhelming amount of gratitude and love for my community. Because YOU stayed home, because YOU wore a mask, because YOU made a huge sacrifice, I (like so many other people living with chronic illness and compromised health) have a bloody good chance of leaving home soon with the rest of the community. Without all those sacrifices YOU made I would still be staring down the barrel at indefinite isolation. Your sacrifices have meant I’m also still able to maintain my fortnightly consultations with my CF hospital team. If we didnt do the second lockdown and our hospitals and health system became overrun due to Covid my usual access to healthcare would have been compromised. Lockdown for me and my family is so much more than rules, curfews and laws forced upon us by the government… it’s protection and opportunity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Feeling incredibly honored and grateful to have been apart of this Mother’s Day photo story; shot by my girl, @alisonvagnini for my FAVORITE body positive underwear line, @shoparq Here’s my little contribution to the journal entry on Arq’s website... Never has motherhood, or life for that matter, looked so raw and uncertain. It took me three years to recognize that my life was severely lacking self care and more deeply, self love. It took getting trapped in my own home, with my little family, to reach the dark depths of pain and hurt — my rock bottom. I desperately needed to change my rhythm. My lunges and mind needed more air, more life. I wasn’t grounded and very much needed to see and believe my worth and value (again). It started with the most raw and vulnerable practice of all, per recommendations from both my couples counselor and personal therapist, to stand in front of the mirror naked or in minimal clothes and speak to myself as though my family, dear friends, and lover would speak to me. That act of love is now a daily ritual and continues to teach and remind me so much. Most of all, it has given me the gift of caring for my body and knowing all it is capable of, especially the gift of bringing my two beautiful and unique daughters earthside. I’ve only been wearing @shoparq underwear since my postpartum with Olive and it has significantly increased my self esteem and helped me feel sexy again. 🐆 - @evergreens_story on Instagram

You may be aware that, alongside @heavenlyrecordings, I’m also involved in all things @caughtbytheriver ⠀ Over the years, as well as being a blog, CBTR has done many things including the making and sharing of a series of mixes which, due to the nature of the content, we collectively call Spoken Word & Nature Disco’. ⠀ ⠀ The premise is self explanatory I guess - the pick of the songs and music have an element of the natural world in their content or title and we blend these tracks with poetry or monologue of a similar persuasion. The use of the word disco could be considered misleading. ⠀ ⠀ Collaborators on the mixes have included Richard Norris and Dubwood Allstars. The mixes are not without charm and if you’d like to hear them you can find them on the Caught by the River Mixcloud page. ⠀ ⠀ Yesterday I found a forgotten private playlist on Spotify, a dumping ground where if I ever heard anything I felt could work in a mix I’d drag it in for future reference. 🌝 THE TRADITIONS OF MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL IN VIETNAM 🥮 Since Vietnam is a part of the East Asian culture sphere, the Mid-Autumn festival, which occurs on the full-moon day of the Lunar Eighth month, is an important holiday to Vietnamese people. The Mid-Autumn festivals traditions have changed over time, but the core value remains a joyous occasion to celebrate the changing seasons. 🎑 In the Trần dynasty (13th - 15th century), Mid-Autumn was the time for the nobles to drink liquor, recite poetry, saunter and enjoy the scenery.” 🌾 During the Revival Lê period (16th - 18th century), for Mid-Autumn, the intellectuals would host a salon where they gathered to drink tea, watch the Moon and amuse one another through conversation. The commoners would light firecrackers. “Every household prepares a feast, everyone wears red to go sightsee.” 🌕 At the beginning of the 20th century, the feast would be arranged as follows: During the day, (we) make and raise offerings up to the ancestors. At night, (we) host the Moon-watching feast. The centerpiece of the feast is the mooncakes, also other confections and fruits, dyed with multiple colors like blue, red, white, yellow. 🐲 Besides, “the uptown girls try to show off their dexterities, carving papayas into this flower and that flower, molding dough into shrimps and fishes. Kids can get papier mâché toys such as elephants, horses, kirins, lions, dragons, deer, shrimps, fishes, butterflies, mantis, flowers, loofah vines, cù lanterns, temples and shrines, valedictorians, toads,... On that evening, the kids would hang out in groups to enjoy the feast, play games, parade with their lanterns and follow the lion dance troupe.” 🎏 Celebrating Mid Autumn was initially a festivity of the elegant upper class but the participation of the folk people had grown stronger and created a deeper impact. At the beginning of the 20th century, Mid-Autumn truly became a Children’s Festival. I started making art over a decade ago when I bought a Barbie Polariod from a Goodwill. Film was only $12 a pack!! I was trying to do Polaroid transfers by peeling the film apart and layering the transparent image onto another Polaroid. I didnt realize I was using the wrong film for this, but I loved the results. After Polaroid was discontinued and redistributed the formula changed slightly and I dont get the same results. Its too expensive to mess with. I saw his eyes scanning the room, looking for a way to help in a situation that couldn’t necessarily be fixed or changed. Everyone present knew she had to walk towards the birth, had to walk through it to get on the other side of this hard moment. I saw his mind making lofty calculations: could he fix it, could he take the burden, could he carry part of the load? The call that brought us to this birth sounded like dad needed us there more than mom. Kelly and I chuckled and happily headed over. But he was right, it was time, we had arrived unhurriedly and now looked on with anticipation. I met his gaze and smiled while giving a silent thumbs up- our job was to wait, to watch over, to wonder, to pray. He gave a quick nod just as a new surge took over her body. She filled her lungs, hung her head, exhaled and swayed next to the bed while a few tiny moans slipped into her labored breathing. He ran his fingers through his hair with a deep sigh, and reached for her hand. He rubbed, squeezed, offered sips of water, kissed away perspiration on her brow, and whispered things that made her smile in between contractions. She leaned, rocked, embraced, pushed, tightened and collapsed inside the work that was just hers to do, but very much both of theirs to experience. Slowly and spontaneously he matched her movement, matched her breath, matched her singular focus in an intimate labor dance. As the birth demands came faster, built higher and pulled deeper she began to lose some of her control and strength. We watched as he continued to move for her, breathe for her, focus for her. One of the very last surges came like a tidal wave over her body, pounding and pummeling while sliding and opening. She threw her weight into him, grasping for grounding with her hands only to find his arms secured around her already. He was not fixing or changing but rather witnessing and containing. Last weekend in Taipei saw openings for two of the most compelling Taiwanese artists in my mind. First on Saturday there was Yu Peng at Cans Tea House, the informal exhibition space operated by the publishing group behind the magazines Cans Asia Art News and Tea Magazine. Yu Peng was a prolific painter who worked mostly in ink but put his own highly contemporary spin on it, often creating extraordinarily dense picture plans in which contorted nudes clamored for space with the scholars rocks and vegetation around them. Before he died in 2014, Yu Peng was endlessly fascinated with growth and maturation, with desire, with chaos, and with the social limits of the taboo. Work from this exhibition was drawn from the personal collection of Cans publisher Liu Tainai, who categorizes Yu Peng within the Wulong School, a term he uses to describe the first generation of artists born in Taiwan after the political shifts of 1950, including Zheng Zaidong and Wang Wan-Chun among others. Then on Sunday there was Hsu Jui-Chien at Nunu Fine Art, a sculptor born in 1994 who creates highly formal work that typically begins with iron sheets and then goes on to encompass concrete, pigment, glass, and/or plaster. To hear him tell it, Hsu typically begins a work by thinking of a certain anchor (a crumpled steel sphere, for instance) and then plots out what is necessary to balance it out in a compositional way (the crumpled steel ball was ultimately swallowed by a tall grid of thin rebar welded into rectilinear intersections). He shines in the nearly microscopic moments that function as punctual to his work. In one piece, a long low floor sculpture that involved opening the facade of the gallery to the street, its not the daring architectural move that sticks but rather the traces of plaster powder that are lovingly preserved in situ as a relic of how a piece of plaster came to sit over a configuration of steel. Artists like these have me wondering how a citys art scene comes to brand itself for a global audience—its difficult but not impossible to tell a story to which both Hsu and Yu Peng can contribute. - @robinpeckham on Instagram

Son nom vient des treilles de fer et de bois qui fermaient ses arches, formant la défense de la ville sur la rivière. Das zeigte sich unter anderem in den zahlreichen Besitztümern und Sommerresidenzen, die sich wohlhabende Regenten- und Kaufmannsfamilien fernab vom städtischen Leben leisteten. Auch bei Adriaen van Ostade ist dieser Wandel zu erkennen. Waren für den jungen Ostade die deftigen Bauerndarstellungen seines Malerfreundes Brouwer prägend, setzte Ende der 1640er Jahre ein grundlegender Wandel seines Stils ein. Seine Kirmes- und Wirtshausszenen stehen zwar in der Tradition des Bauerngenres, indem pointierte Kommentare und belustigende Belehrungen latent anklingen – es wird gefeiert, getanzt und getrunken –, aber nicht Ausschweifung und Leichtsinn sind Anlass der Darstellung, sondern die Zufriedenheit im Kleinen und die Freude an der Geselligkeit. Von den 50 Radierungen, welche Ostade zeitlebens schuf, wird in der Ausstellung ein erlesenes Konvolut gezeigt, ergänzt durch zwei Gemälde aus seinem Frühwerk. Damit wird die Bedeutung und der besondere Charakter von Ostades Radierkunst sowie sein Stilwandel zu einer einfühlsamen Handschrift nachvollziehbar. Art Appreciation starts early in the Montessori environment. Instead of doing a lesson on how to paint, I like to pick an artist every month and do a project inspired by the artist. This month we displayed pictures of Mary Cassatt’s art. She loved painting mothers and their children, so that is what we used as inspiration for our project. There is nothing that feels more natural to me than nursing my baby to sleep (and nursing my baby for soothing). I have been told, “You don’t want your baby to depend on being fed to sleep” - I want my baby to feel safe physically and emotionally, and that’s on my breast, on my heart. “It’s not sustainable” - I don’t have a desire to sustain this forever, but whilst she wants me this close, I want to be this close to her too. “It’s creating a bad habit” - Being there for my daughter when she needs me, in the most innate way she knows, is not creating a bad habit, it’s creating safety and trust. I used to get caught up in what the books and doctors told me I should do when it came to raising my daughter, but I have returned home to my heart and intuition. With each step and choice to make, I ask my heart what feels natural and right for my daughter and then for myself… and we go that way ✨ And today at 5 months old, Grace no longer needs to be fed to sleep as she is beginning to feel safer in this big wide world (although sometimes we still do). It was important to me that she showed me when she was ready. Our babies are not machines, it is not a one size fits all model - they are unique and sensitive human beings and our job is to discover and nurture who they are as they grow and evolve. 🌻💛 - @_melissa_mai on Instagram

Não existirá o cenário perfeito. Apenas vá e entregue o que tem. Confia nos processos e tudo vai se encaixando. A perfeição não existe! Esse lugar impecável é parte do nosso imaginário, não é real. Quando percebi isso recebi Catarina e depois Francisco. E sou a mãe possível. Faço o que posso, com o que tenho. Nossa vida está longe da perfeição mas não a trocaria por nada nesse mundo. Waiting —(thoughts on a painting) You probably saw this painting - posted it before, but it’s Winslow Homer, painted in Cullercoats in 1881/2. It’s of some women, and a small child, waiting for the fishing boats to come back. The husbands and sons are out at sea. I feel like I’m waiting too. I resonate with this. I’m not waiting for fishing boats, but each day, I sort of look to the horizon, and I’m looking for something else. I’m looking for the ships of decency, the ships of truth. I don’t want to tell my daughters about the ships as if they were some kind of legend-I want to show them the sails of redemption on the horizon, emerging from the mist. I’ve been waiting a long time. At first, I really paid attention. Now it’s been so long, I really sometimes wonder if they’ll ever come back. And I recognize, I must be prepared to go on if they never do. I’m yearning for the clouds of lies that have settled like a fog over a river of sewage, to be blown away, and for the light of an ancient lighthouse to shine, finally, to lead them home. - @thesilverseas on Instagram

finally got round to finishing this embroidered lino print on avocado dyed fabric I started months ago 🌿🌿 It is inspired by ‘the children’s fire’ an ancient concept that enabled our ancestors to live in balance and harmony with the natural world. Always stopping before making any decision, law or action and thinking how it will effect our children’s future and the next seven generations to come. Also loosely inspired by the cree Indian prophecy - “Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish been caught, and the last stream poisoned, will we realize we cannot eat money.” These ideas and concepts are more important now than ever before as it’s so clear how we’ve become so disconnected from nature and our home but hopefully we can turn this around with direct action and reconnecting with our natural environment and ourselves. 💚🌿 - @joyrooneystudio on Instagram
I juggle between a lot of mediums now. Going back and forth from Watercolors to Acrylics to Alcohol inks to even Gouache! I do not care what this portrays about me as an Artist or for my small Art business. It may come across as my lack of perfecting a medium or even as somebody who is totally undecided in what she likes/good at. The only thing that I ever will be worried about is chasing COLOR. In. Any. Form. . And I hope as an Artist, you are too. I hope you are not giving in to that pressure of finding your own style or perfecting that one medium that you think youre good at. I hope youre not restricting your Artistic freedom by adhering to these limitations that we created for ourselves to makes ourselves stand out. Because it doesnt matter. You cannot find your style.
