The award recognizes someone who is committed to neighbourhood values of connection, engagement, and neighbourhood involvement. ❤️Kitsilano Cares Community Volunteer Group When COVID19 shut down everything so suddenly last March Ksenia saw a need in the community and quickly took action! Within days she reached out to the community and built a team of 80 community volunteers, pairing them to support seniors and others not able to venture outdoors to do routine errands for themselves due to COVID19. Months later, she and her team continue to support seniors and others living on the Westside helping with grocery shopping, pharmacy pick up, and friendly visits to isolated seniors. This endeavor ended up in a partnership with Kits House where her volunteer team continues to support and assist the community. ❤️ Kitsilano Cares: COVID19 Community Support Facebook Page With the creation of this Facebook page Ksenia established a way for the Kitsilano community to come together, engage, and support each other. ❤️ Neighbourhood Small Grant Project Leader Ksenia applied for and was granted a @neighbourhoodsmallgrants for her project “Get to Know your Neighbours: The Ultimate Community Building Challenge”. So is Ver Versus Ver. We wanted to use a single word with a meaning that has several possibilities. The same way that implies deeper readings. Today we are not interested in the difference between looking and seeing, but between seeing (and perhaps believing what we see) and taking the moment of reflection to reach a deeper meaning. Because seeing art implies reflection. And generally, it generates more questions than answers. But the questions are what inspire our curiosity, those that lead us to experiment, those that generate conversation and also understanding. If you go to the Brooklyn Bridge Park, check it out :) Value : In terms of Iconography will be featured from September 17- November 29, 2020 Over the past year I did a collaboration with @mz.icar , the anonymous art collective which is comprised of Black women . Established in 2018, their name is racIzM, backward. Their membership is comprised of an illustrator, photographer, designer, prop stylist, street artist, and collage artist. Mz. Icar started the collective to create works that celebrate Women, global Blackness, and Play. They create narratives in the form of mixed-media street, art and fine art, that explore histories and imagine the best case scenario future, from the perspective of women, and people of color. The Mz. Icar collective came to my studio a few times and went through my archive to find source material to work with and to re-imagine. The images were re-printed, cut-up, collaged, re-composed, and re-photographed depicting the subjects almost as goddesses with infinite potential, value, wealth, and worth. Mz. Icar’s work thematically deals with re-imagining pasts and futures, this project included. Very excited to announce the inaugural Commonwealth and Council Summer School! Through the COVID lockdown we began holding weekly gallery zooms (actually nightly at first but that flopped quickly...) and multiple threads of conversation about wanting to connect with the larger artist community and rethink art education coalesced into the initiative to try a “summer school.” It is free and open to all. The Department of Transportation has engaged on a rushed, unaccountable process that imposes changes to Diversity Plaza to supposedly aid small business owners. We joined the organizations signing this letter and stand with them on this statement to the Department of Transportation, asking for transparency and an actual community process, not a performative one, that is accountable to impacted and vulnerable communities, who deserve truly public spaces beyond the interests of property owners and commerce. A Ravello un breve ma violento acquazzone ha costretto l’organizzazione del Ravello Festival a spostare il concerto dell’Orchestra del Teatro di San Carlo all’Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer. Il debutto di Marco Armiliato in Campania e al Ravello Festival quindi c’è stato ma non sul palco del Belvedere di Villa Rufolo. All’auditorium, e questo non è un segreto, la bellezza del panorama che fa da sfondo al palco sospeso sul mare del Golfo di Salerno, lascia il posto ad una maggiore gratificazione in termine di suono e di acustica. Marco Armiliato e i 44 elementi del San Carlo accompagnati nella Città della Musica dal sovrintendente Stéphane Lissner, nel pomeriggio avevano provato sul Belvedere ma i nuvoloni neri che incombevano alle loro spalle non lasciavano presagire niente di buono e infatti… poco prima dell’inizio del concerto il forte temporale ha imposto lo spostamento. All’Auditorium il concerto, iniziato alle 21, ha regalato una prima parte con due pagine celebri di Shubert: l’Ouverture in re maggiore im italienischen Stile, D.590 e l’Ouverture in do maggiore im italienischen Stile, op.170, D.591 e una seconda con la Serenata n.1 in re maggiore per orchestra, op.11di Brahms. “Concerto, estivo fresco, con una musica sublime in grado di toccare il cuore. The Australian government has failed to meet important commitments to protect the rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and Indigenous peoples, Human Rights Watch said today in a submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council. At Tuesday’s meeting, NDP education critic Claudia Chender addressed growing angst among parents and school staff about the reopening plan, calling the 36-page document an outline that prioritizes safety in schools but lacks essential operational detail. Chender put forward a motion to the all-party committee that the group write a letter to Education Minister Zach Churchill asking for the department to provide numbers on school classrooms able to meet social distancing requirements and its communication plan with teachers, staff and parents. The Dartmouth South MLA also asked that the minister release the results of school ventilation testing that began earlier this month. The province pledged to assess ventilation systems in all schools before reopening on Sept. 8 and last Thursday Churchill said no issues had been found in any schools tested at that point. Chender’s motion received unanimous support from her three fellow opposition members, NDP Kendra Coombes and Tories Brad Johns and Larry Harrison but the motion was defeated by a unanimous Liberal vote, including chairman Brendan Maguire, vice-chairwoman Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, Bill Horne, Rafah DiCostanzo and Ben Jessome. . . . Last week an absolutely forward-thinking public initiative titled ‘The Tokyo Toilet’ was unveiled, presenting 5 of the total 17 new public toilet designs by leading architects, designers and creatives around Shibuya-ku that include designs by Wonderwall, Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, Toyo Ito, Fumihiko Maki, and even Marc Newson and NIGO, to name a few of the total 17. 👁 🚽 Pictured, architect #ShigeruBan’s design at 代々木深町小公園. I love this transparent shell, which turns opaque when someone enters and turns the lock. Architect Shigeru Ban explained his concept as; “Public toilets, especially in parks, usually have two concerns — whether the inside is clean, and whether or not someone is hiding inside, and here you can eliminate both worries. Sophie Prescott, the Fitzgerald High School salutatorian, wanted to use her graduation speech to bring about change. The young scholars speech was cut short mere moments after she said Black Lives Matter. Prescott said she wanted to bring awareness to racial discrimination, oppression and derogatory comments from teachers — an issue she talked about with her other peers of color. The school, Prescott says, had a copy of her speech for two weeks and she was asked to change it three days before graduation. “I chose to say my original speech, regardless of the consequences, because I felt it needed to be heard and that my classmates would relate to what I was saying,” she said. - @walbnews10 on Instagram
