À l’heure où j’écris ces lignes, à l’heure où il faut arrêter de se relire avec acharnement, lâcher prise, se détendre, et sourire, je prends enfin conscience, qu’il y a dans notre démarche de publication, tous les éléments abordés en rapport à la liberté dans ce premier numéro. Il faut laisser partir le vertige de l’intimité étalée, la peur du regard des autres, des jugements, qu’ils viennent de soi-même ou des autres, arrêter de se questionner sur la légitimité, cesser de se mettre toujours en rapport à des injonctions, des normes, des valeurs de société, cesser de vouloir définir, tout, notre publication, nos choix, de vouloir tout le temps simplifier ou justifier. Je crois qu’il est temps de planter fort ses racines dans la terre et de s’envoler. Premier numéro touffu d’une longue série de Toasts à empiler, il est là, le premier, Libres, ça, Céline, moi, cela signifie qu’au travers de nos mots, traits, couleurs, formes, phrases, mélodies, nous choisissons d’être, de dire, de poser, d’y aller. Il y a un engagement, celui de notre singularité, il y a nos idées, expériences, nos peurs, notre poésie, nos éclats, nos doutes, les échanges avec les autres, il y a une forme de nudité dans ces pages, voulue, osée, qui parfois nous fait tourner de l’oeil, mais tant pis, c’est nous, comme ça, c’est la vie, telle que nous la vivons, voulons. Artist Feature: Cole Pauls is a Tahltan comic artist, illustrator, and printmaker hailing from Haines Juction with a BFA in Illustration from Emily Carr. Residing in Vancouver, Cole focuses on his two comic series, recently winning the Best Zine of the Year award in 2020. Cole has supported many of our College programs including the Indigenous Math Camp and Indigenous Upgrading Program as a workshop facilitator and guest speaker and has graciously shared his Orange Shirt Day illustration with us. The illustration was initially commissioned by BYTE and the Yukon Assembly of First Nations. “For my Orange Shirt Day illustration, I depicted a boy from the Wolf Clan and girl from the Crow Clan in full regalia, singing and drumming to pay respect to all the victims and survivors of Residential Schools. These are the moments we wish didn’t invade our lives. The hard moments, the emotional moments, the painful moments. I have a liver tumour that is under investigation. Covid caused some delays and adjusting to my treatment plan and care. Today I have a CT scan for some imagining required for making the next step in the action plan. I don’t like IVs. I have deliverer 6 kids into the world and I haven’t like the IVs any better as a result of this experience. I have small valvy veins that often take several attempts to be successful at IVs What I’ve learnt along my journey is the worst thing to tell someone is to ignore their natural feelings or that those feelings are wrong, bad or shouldn’t be felt. Like any good movie you recognize the gift of the movie and what makes it great is in the emotions you’ve experienced. A range of emotions, sadness, fear, hope, love, loss, excitement. Not one good, not one bad. All feelings I no longer hate of feel shame when I have fear. I am afraid. I embrace the fear, validate that it’s real, breathe through it, honour it and give it a place in my range of feelings, in my humanity. Then once I’ve allowed myself the honour of being multifaceted and emotional I remind myself I’m also brave and strong and deserving of peace. I breathe and I hold a place for ALL those feelings. I asked my wonderful nurse to hold my hand, and together feeling loved and accepted for a person with feelings I did attempt 3 to get in the IV, that was thankfully successful. I cried. I allowed myself the cry. It felt natural and empowering. It was how I felt in the moment and that’s ok to express. I’m not afraid now. I did it. I not have the information I need to make the next plan. The IVs aren’t over. I haven’t learnt not to fear. I’ve learnt how to accept all that I am. AND ACCEPT IM WORTHY OF EMOTION. I express what I’m feeling and ask for what I need to bring peace into hard situation for me. I needed to hold the hand of another (a stranger) and feel their acceptance. Give yourself permission to feel. Don’t shame one type of emotion and elevate another. Being a human we have them all. Feel! - @reclaiming_a_dream on Instagram

The world premiere of Ass at @pioneertheatre has been canceled because of coronavirus. We were just shy of two weeks into rehearsal, and creating some really magical stuff. To say I’m sad is an understatement—there’s a certain kind of hurt that comes from knowing that the work won’t make it out of the rehearsal room. Roupas, comida e mesmo certas viagens às vezes funcionam como uma droga que traz euforia, alegria, sensação de liberdade, poder ou entorpecimento para, algumas horas, semanas, meses depois, cobrar uma nova dose, com novo consumo de bens materiais ou imateriais para o seu acordo de bem-estar com o mundo seguir valendo. Se é para comprar, então, que essa compra faça muito sentido, que você saiba para quem (literalmente) está dando o seu dinheiro, e que esse produto venha com boas histórias, que traga um pouco de quem o produziu pra sua vida. Quando minha malha chegou, ele ganhou essa fotinho que, como não ia ser publicada, foi sem maquiagem mesmo e no modo selfie (sou contra publicar selfies, podem reparar, até na minha conta pessoal). Teço desde os 12 anos, fui ensinado pela minha avó, conta Leonardo, que largou um emprego na área corporativa depois de um burnout e decidiu abrir a @estudio_artii em 2013. Out here testing the waters... first flight since hubby and I flew home from Mexico City end of February. Here I am back in CDMX again, my daughter and I on our way to visit friends in Oaxaca. Airports, Orlando-Atlanta-Mexico City... seem slightly less busy than normal. Most people wearing face coverings, physical distancing encouraged, as well as regular hand washing. When someone explicits expressing that he or she dosent have much self love left with themselves. I everytime just feel like asking questions to those in deep context to this phrase said by them. If people dosent love themselves,then why do they get hurt, feel sad and lonely? They feel sad because someone hurted them and because their self is panged by other individual. One needs to stuff the basic point in their minds that everyone loves themselves and when this love isnt gained by them they feel dejected. Praise God! The blood clots and pulmonary embolisms are all gone!!!🌈❤️💯🥳✨ The doctors had cautioned me that the embolisms particularly take 5-6 months to breakdown. (And things could still go wrong during that time. i.e. sudden stroke or death)😬 In 3 months mine are gone. That’s the miracle we have been praying for.🙏Thank you for keeping me in your prayers. God hears us and knows our concerns, worries & fears. In the Bible it says over 365 times to ‘fear not/do not be afraid’. There are so many things that cause fear in this life that God gave us enough reminders for each day of the year.👊📆 I am so thankful for His peace and protection that guard my heart against fear!❤️There were many nights I was afraid and would wake up with anxiety trying to take over. Mas afinal, o que é acne? Ela é uma lesão causada pelo aumento da produção de sebo vinda das glândulas sebáceas. O excesso de oleosidade faz com que os poros sejam obstruídos, contribuindo na proliferação de bactérias naquela região, resultando nos comedões, mais conhecido como cravos. I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but this moment is a lot. 2020 is a-fucking-lot but also, right this second is a lot too. It might have been a lot regardless of a global pandemic and with it, is..well.. unprecedented. I need to keep reminding myself of what is important right now and it consistently reminds me to simplify things. 1. Never underestimate the magical powers of a shower. Refreshed and renewed, wash those yucky feelings away! 2. Stress naps (if you can get them!) give me life. Nothing like having a little power nap to move through a difficult moment. 3. Stretch your body. I find it helps my mind stop contorting as much as it does sometimes. 4. Breathe. I know when I’m overwhelmed, I stop breathing properly. Take three deep breaths, open up your chest, your heart and your mind. 5. Exercise. When in doubt, always choose exercise. #feelgoodhormonesflowing Like I said, not sure who might need this reminder today, but I certainly did. Keep it simple. In preparation for leaving LA at the end of this month, I’ve been taking Odessa to hike up to the Griffith Observatory all summer long. This has been wonderful not only because my nearly-five-year old can keep up with my pace and scale all the way up, but also because at the top she hurls herself onto the grass in sheer delight. “This,” she told me the first time she saw the domed observatory, “is the land of my dreams.” I had the same reaction when I moved to LA ten years ago, whether it was my second or third or fifth day here, hiking up in second-hand prada loafers like a fool. All I remember was feeling the same airy-yet-factual impulse. It has never ceased being a place where I commune with the better aspects of Los Angeles, the dreamlike parts: cinematic man-made elements that mingle with the green-and-purple-and-gold hillsides; the correlation between effort and reward and perspective change. LA represents a lot of things to a lot of people, and it has meant a lot of things for me. The quick altitude changes afforded by this city have helped me grow in more ways than one. Ive spent many years on sets, where I never stopped learning the craft, professionalism and ethic demanded by my work. Ive spent the hourly equivalent of many years in coffee bars- to me the beating heart of daytime culture in Los Angeles as in no other city. Ive watched the building of a group of extraordinary coffee shops that represented a dynamic vision and champion great people and quality product. I have found friends and collaborators who are luminous with their ideas and their way and the environments they create. I found my person and created a person and learned to cook. This has been the best ten years of my life. The sensory impressions of each memory, of all the friends and places I wont be able to drive and see after August, are a jumble of colors and feelings and voices and smells and tastes. Our path forward exists abundant with dreams, and of course, entirely covid-stalled. We are moving to western massachusetts for the next few months to be with family and lots of new hiking paths, and after that, we’ll, it’s less clear. - @natalietoren on Instagram
