a mini APPLEause to me for making it through my first week with my own patients (!!!). But with that - it’s time for me to take a pause on social. In all honesty, this week was a lot and left me feeling pretty depleted. Since starting this new job, I’ve typically spent the weekends playing catch up - between social media, blog projects, the news, the world, friends, family, etc. I hope to have a better balance of this once I get more settled and comfortable, but as any new grad knows, the beginning is just rough regardless of how prepared you are. And this week there was A LOT of catching up to do. Breonna Taylor. Sitting with the tragedy and complete injustice of how we failed her and saying her name. Breonna Taylor. The reality and fear of who will be replacing RBG - both for me (as someone who identifies as a woman) and for my future patients in a community health primary care practice. Feeling baseline overwhelmed lends me to feel extremely powerless in all of this. And how pointless pictures and rituals of meal prep and “daily, normal life” feel during such turmoil, upheaval, and injustice. So it’s time to take a pause to connect back to my power. Because I have A LOT of power for good, not only as someone with a platform, but as a white woman in medicine. Instead of dedicating time to content creation and posting this week, here are some things I’ll be doing: - Researching my local officials - Asking anyone and everyone I know that they ensure they’re registered to vote - spending my dollars at BIPOC business /establishments - breathing. lots of it and deeply. - more mindfulness instead of mindless scrolling to connect back to the present rather than feeling completely and utterly overwhelmed and afraid about the future Okay then. Mites, Microbes, and Cancer in Santa Catalina Island Foxes by Alexandra DeCandia (Thank you to our guest blogger Alexandra DeCandia a doctoral candidate at Princeton University) Over the last few decades, weve realized that organisms are far more complicated than they initially appear. What may look like an individual fox is actually an ecosystem containing trillions of microorganisms on every square inch. [Figure 1] Despite their tiny size, microbes influence important host functions, such as development, digestion, stress tolerance, behavior, and even immunity. Therefore learning more about these hidden actors can inform wildlife conservation of at-risk species in the modern molecular era. Looking into the ear canal of an island fox. Microbes may be particularly important to species that lack genetic diversity, such as Channel Island foxes, especially where disease threatens long-term persistence. On Santa Catalina Island, scientists discovered extremely high rates of ear canal tumors, where roughly half of adult foxes have growths in their ears. Although the exact cause is unknown, researchers linked ear mite infection to tumor growth and development. The most prominent hypothesis states that infection with ear mites leads to inflammation and rampant cell growth in the ear canal, which in turn leads to tumors. Thankfully, treating foxes with the acaricide Ivermectin has already decreased mite burdens and tumor rates in these foxes. However, theres more to this story. We still dont fully understand how mite infection leads to tumor growth. In particular, my collaborators and I wondered whether microbes play a role in this system. For example, do mites disrupt healthy microbes and cause secondary bacterial infections? And do those infections then contribute to the chronic inflammation that precedes tumor growth? Figure 2: Island fox is swabbed during health check To address these questions, my collaborators at the Catalina Island Conservancy collected microbe samples by swabbing ear canals (and a few other body sites) of healthy and mite-infected foxes. Held in our town where deer and humans co-exist in harmony, our hybrid film festival also had many people from around the world visiting online. Over the five-day period, the Nara International Film Festival had 4,100 physical visitors. We also had 35,000 viewers online. Posts from our guests brought us up to 160,000 viewers, giving us a total of approximately 200,000 people who experienced our festival. This is evidence of all of the close connections that our staff and volunteers made. The memory that resides here in this land of Nara, and the light that shines on the people living today brought something very rich to all of us. Such a WONDERFUL morning with @paddlewithapurpose! It was SO FUN to get on Lake Ivanhoe in a kayak, paddle around pick up trash that makes its way into the lake, and knowing we were helping the environment and doing some good in the world. I would highly recommend this! And the best part? You can do this for Birthdays or team building or corporate events as well. And, you get to be outside and safely social distance. Its a win for you, and our community. Its only $25 per person, 9 am to 11 am on a Sunday, and the money goes right back to the non-profit so they can stay afloat (pun intended). With 5, 2-person kayaks, we picked up 111 lbs of trash, and the organization, in the past 2 years, has picked up 7 tons of trash from Florida waterways! New post up on my blog! I made this 1960s inspired spring coat a few years ago, but the lining had always been a bit wonky (cheap lining+ironing=shrinkage). This summer I finally took the lining out, made the inside look pretty, and added a huge black button at the top. I like it so much more now!
