Ive been so tied up in delving into other peoples homes with the podcast that I forgot we have a home of our own to share, which is why so many of you were following along in the first place 🌿 . Well actually it’s our third baby 👶🏻👶🏽👶🏼 because this labour of love is “Tap Wall 3” and the latest prototype on our quest to invent the perfect Refill Bar for cleaning and bodycare liquids. It’s waaaaaaayyy harder than we thought to get lots of different liquids flowing to taps efficiently, without leaking or blocking. BUT it’s our best model yet - and we are the first shop we know of to get this far with it. It’s involved a lot of trial and error, a few chemistry and physics lessons and much fiddling about with pumps and gauges. But she works and she looks great! Thanks to @makingitout_cio for the construction and @chilli_graphics.co.uk for bringing our branding to life. MILK Cereal Milk - popularised by @christinatosi and the epic @milkbarstore - is an amazing trip down memory lane and a flavour concept that can now be found in ice creams, coffees and beers. For our second bottled cocktail we created a ‘cereal milk liqueur’ - made from milk washed blended Scotch, cereal milk hydrosol, vanilla, sugar and acid. To make the cereal milk hydrosol, we toast cornflakes in the oven until golden brown, then blend with whole milk and leave to rest. After the milk has been flavoured, we strain off all the liquid and distill to capture a highly aromatic, crystal clear form of that cereal milk. We use this hydrosol to dilute the milk washed whisky down to 24% abv. Once sweetened, the liqueur lands at 21.8% abv. The cereal milk liqueur is blended with a white chocolate distillate, pineau des charentes blanc, ‘cereal’ syrup and orange flower - diluted and bottled. As we make our way through winter the work starts again for our viticulture team. Pictured here are our 1 year old Abel clone pinot noir vines. Vines of this age require extra care during pruning due to the fragility that comes with the youth of the vines. We are currently in the stage of wrapping down the canes for next years crop. To do this, we first select the healthiest cane. We then trim the healthy cane and wrap it down to the cordon wire to provide the young vine with stability. This clone of pinot noir is a rare variety in the Yarra Valley and is the single clone used to make our Smuggler reserve pinot, so getting these vines established properly at this stage of development is very important! Nå for tiden jobber vi med isolering, tilfylling, legging av varmekabel utenfor, asfaltering, og testing(!) av toalettene før de kan åpnes for publikum, forhåpentligvis allerede i høst. Toalettet i Grøtfjord ferdigstilles også i disse dager. Med tiden kommer det også toaletter i Tromvik, som etter planen også er på plass nå i høst, og nye toaletter på Charlottenlund og i Telegrafbukta. Alle toalettene skal selvfølgelig være vinteråpne og tilrettelagt for personer med funksjonsnedsettelser. The ‘Mud Room’ in our Californian Bungalow Project. These spaces are typically a homes secondary entrance and a space to remove shoes, hang coats and bags, store umbrellas etc. As this was to be utilised by a young family with 4 kids, we designed a custom bench seat with a practical ‘leather look’ vinyl fabric (easy for wiping down) as well as included additional over head storage and shelving for concealing miscellaneous items. Have you ever wondered if we would ever get fancier packaging? I have contemplated it probably a thousand times over the years, but ultimately, decided against it for a lot of reasons. Our packaging is minimal. Brown cardboard. Kraft shred. We hand stamp and fold every box ourselves. Its reminiscent of the brown paper packages Julie Andrews sang about 🎶. Care goes into each product we carry, and care also goes into the packing of each box. When you get one, the focus isnt the box, its whats inside. And for a business that seeks to promote the abundance of high quality local goods, thats important. Our boxes are made of recycled cardboard and shred. You can reuse them, burn them, recycle them or compost them. They are totally eco-friendly and thats important to me. Our boxes are really cost efficient - and that means you dont pay for them. If we upgraded our packaging, youd see that reflected in the cost of them, or even an additional charge just for a fancy box. I dont want that, do you? Lastly, and maybe most importantly, I feel like the boxes FEEL like youre getting a care package of hand crafted goods. They have that feeling of being filled with great stuff from home. Local. hey guys. Amidst everything that has been happening- I have some good news to share. Yesterday, about thirty minutes after the shelter in place order was announced, we passed inspection on the kilns in the new studio. This is many months in the making, and I’m so grateful that we finished right before the window on team work closed. We will be back to firing as soon as pg&e connects the gas, which should happen within the month, as long as nothing unexpected happens. I had a great interaction with my pg&e agent over the phone this morning; we bonded over how weird it is to work from home. I’m hoping to personally get into the studio solo to start glazing some overdue orders from some very patient customers. we’ll see. I’m extremely grateful to everyone who has been part of making this happen. I already miss seeing my small team every day. As @staindofficial once said, “its been a while...” We’ve been intentionally laying low from social media and to be honest, our mental health and well being has improved greatly. I don’t want to dismiss the good that IG can offer but at this point the I’m not sure there is a net positive. As a small business, the ability to speak directly to customers has been so helpful to get this project off the ground but we reject the notion that social media is a necessary evil to build a thriving ecommerce business in 2020. Growing mycelium onto concrete to form a stool. It’s amazing how the mycelium binds itself to surfaces so strongly that when lifted, it can support a lot of weight such as this block of concrete. This was one of the experiments that led to our current study on the relationship between these two construction materials of the past and future. Hello @stronghold_roasters An innovative small-batch roaster. Something that is hard to compare to existing brands, a nishe of its own. For me it combines a competition coffee roaster, a sampler/smaller batch for the roastery and an indoor coffeeshop roaster not requiring gas or chimney. Very small, easy to operate, auto-replicating profiles and having public hub of profiles made by active users and champions. Producing batches from 150g with very thin tuning of parameters up to roasting 500 kilos per month in 8/5 work week with barista pressing 1 button to auto replicate the profile and batches up to 850g.
