We are providing food to the homeless, daily wagers and Riksha pullers at Kadushya Ghat near Monestry Market Kashmirigate. Most of them live on the Yamuna river bank under trees and some in homesless shelters. Due to the COVID 19 situation, there is currently no work in Old Delhi market for these people and they struggle to get one meal a day. This morning I watched a press conference from a canning redemption center called @surewecannyc in Brooklyn, which got an eviction notice just before the pandemic. This is one of the places where bottle + can collectors trade their loads for the refundable deposits, except this one is a nonprofit that also serves as a community center. . Sure We Can is at risk of losing its 14,000 sqft lot — which takes 11 million bottles and cans out of the wastestream and put $700,000 back into the community, according to a founder — if they can’t secure a $2.3 million nonprofit capital funds grant from the city council before the budget is settled at the end of this week. ($1 million of that would come from the Brooklyn Borough president’s budget, already pledged by Eric Adams.) This is a tough year for budget requests of any form, and the organization is asking supporters to press their city council members in support. . There are other places that take cans. But only SureWeCan has a mission to remove the stigma in working as a collector. “I have noticed over the years that we are treated as subhuman, and that’s exactly the opposite of who and what we are,” said Pierre Simmons, a Brooklyn canner who presented this morning: “We’re independent workers.” He spoke alongside a state senator, a congressman, a boro prez + a former governor of Chicago. (You can watch it on SureWeCan’s FB page) Simmons also has a reply for those that claim canners steal revenue from the city: “Portraying us as stealing from the city is ludicrous. It’s a joke, it’s a further demonization of people who are already down.” . Last year I wrote a story for NYT about how street vendors were also fighting the city for dignity in their profession, yet another flexible, low-barrier-to-entry business available to the most vulnerable people in society. One woman told me that as long as she could vend, she knew she could put money in her pocket. She didn’t have to wait for somebody to hire her, a black woman, an immigrant from Africa with an accent. LIBERAN A TUQUE EL MANATÍ LUEGO DE 77 DÍAS HOSPITALIZADO En la mañana de hoy, personal del Centro de Conservación de Manatíes del Caribe de la Universidad Interamericana y del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA) liberaron a Tuque el Manatí, luego de una rehabilitación exitosa. El manatí fue encontrado a mediados de julio en un canal de mangles en el estuario de la Bahía de Jobos con heridas en su lomo causadas por la hélice de una embarcación. Personal del Centro y del DRNA lo rescataron y llevaron a las instalaciones de rehabilitación del Centro en Bayamón, donde permaneció bajo cuidado veterinario por 77 días. Los veterinarios y cuidadores del Centro curaron sus heridas y le proveyeron de medicamentos y tratamiento los cuales lograron su sanación expedita. Tuque fue rescatado en Ponce en el 2005 y liberado al mar en el 2010. Desde entonces, vive libre y adaptado a su medio ambiente en el área de Salinas en la costa sur de Puerto Rico. “El manatí macho de 15 años de edad fue devuelto a su medio ambiente en el mismo estuario con un transmisor satelital,” detalló el doctor Antonio Mignucci, director del Centro. “El hecho de que Tuque fuera victima de heridas significativas producidas por una embarcación exacerba la importancia de que los usuarios de botes y jet-ski conduzcan responsablemente, a baja velocidad y utilizando gafas polarizadas en áreas de manatíes como los manglares y cerca de la costa,” dijo el también profesor de ciencias marinas de la antes mencionada universidad. “Al re-abrir las marinas y playas como parte de las ordenes ejecutivas sobre el COVID-19, es esencial que retornemos a disfrutar del mar, pero de forma responsable, con respeto a nuestras especies marinas, como el manatí,” concluyó Mignucci. I will never forget this day ever. I was heading into to Logan to work for US Airs VIP services, my inlaws were flying out that morning as well. I got the call to stay home. As we watched things unfold, we decided to leave the city, because they thought the LNG Tanker, a main gas source to Boston, was in the harbor and may be a target. I lived in the North End/Waterfront of Boston at the time, across from Logan. We would take our dog Dooley to Columbus Park every morning and at night, we would bring wine and drink with our neighbors and fellow dog owners. The most haunting part of the 2 weeks following this terrorist act on our country, was the absolute silence. No planes taking off, no traffic on the streets. I will never forget that silence, COMPLETE SILENCE.
