Opened in 2014, @sayulitacantina is named after Sayulita, Mexico, a fishing and surfing village about 25 miles north of Puerto Vallarta. The 1790 colonial was used in the 1980s as a bank and, most recently, as a hair salon and medical offices. But the house had been vacant for years and had become somewhat of an eyesore at the gateway to the village, with its peeling paint and abandoned drive-through teller windows. I dont work with vegans. 🙅🏼♀️ Why? Because its not the optimal dietary strategy for good health and longevity. Veganism is centered around animal rights beliefs. Which I will not argue about with anyone. However I will argue till the cows come home that it is the least optimal diet for human health. Plant based is a newer term, and I like that its encouraging more people to eat more veggies. But I also hate it because people use it as an excuse to eat processed unnatural foods made from non-meat products. One can, and should, enjoy plant based meals that incorporate lots of fresh veggies, some fruit, beans, nuts, seeds and grains as tolerated. That does not mean you cant ALSO have some animal protein on your plate. Real whole food plants contain micronutrients that play a role in our energy, how well we sleep, how well we recover from exercise, our hormonal balance and so much more! Things like Beyond Meat & Impossible Burger are NOT PLANTS! They might help you get youre protein in, but theyre also full of processed oils, soy and gluten. There are plenty of better ways to get in protein. My point? We all eat some processed non-whole foods every now and then. If you dont eat meat or seafood, youre going to have to work harder to get your protein in. Dont make meat replacement products your go to. Make them the exception to the rule. And if you can include some fish, eggs or organic full fat dairy daily or at least a couple times/week, please do! I promise, youll be doing your body a favor! Meat is NOT the enemy! Picture 1: Not how I normally eat, but damn were those ribs good! Picture 2: A typical meal for me where at least half my plate is veggies, a quarter of it is meat, and of course some fats mixed in. Bay Area friends, a non-essential PSA, but one a lot of you will be glad I shared if this wasnt on your radar. @stationhousecafe is closing on May 31 after 46 years; in many ways it was heart and soul of Pt. Reyes Station, with a devoted community that extended far beyond a town of 848 people. It was @piperkerman and my favorite spot in the world and where we had one awesome wedding reception fourteen years ago. Friends close and far flooded this tiny town, and both the lovely and amazing @tessasouter and the late and legendary Ralph Carneys bands created the perfect vibe for the evening. Station House isnt another restaurant Covid casualty, but rather a victim of greed: the landlord wanted to raise the rent 300%. Its open for takeout Thursday-Monday until May 31, and you could do a lot worse than eating a burger or polenta & greens with a beer and rosé in plastic cups, while sitting on a bench in town. If do go, ask for The Lotus, my take on a Mint Julep, created for our wedding, and such a hit the owner decided to keep it on the menu for years. This article upsets me. 1) Stop copying me @chefthomaskeller ! 😜 2) TFL Is a place that inspires generations of chefs across the country. It is a place that supports local farmers, craftsman, artists, and pushes everyone to dream big and reach new heights and possibilities. These dreamers that TFL have inspired are generally not wealthy, and this makes a mockery of everyone’s profession that they take great pride in. Places like TFL take a life of its own, with so many more dimensions than simply being a playground for the rich. Kyōten and countless other restaurants, perhaps even your own job, don’t exist without TFL laying the groundwork for it. 3) I’m sure my local Popeye’s with their consistently full drive-thru makes more revenue than TFL does serving 3 tables a night. This is not a place that is taking advantage of anyone, and certainly not a place that will ‘take those people’s money and run’. They are a business trying to make it through and have every right to receive support from their clientele for doing incredible work over decades and decades. 4) I’m open to have any dialogue about this Eater. Hello everyone! Per the information we’ve received from Governor Holcomb and Mayor Hogsett, The Rathskeller will be re-opening May 18th (5/18) for restaurant dine-in service only! The Biergarten and live entertainment will resume on June 14th (6/14). This is the house I would’ve grown up in had my parents not decide to move to ATL nearly two decades ago. The “what if” scenarios were enough to inspire the move. The bizarreness in the world this year brought me back to square one. It led to an intense inner reflection pondering how in the hell did everything go so wrong. Then I asked myself what do I do now and what do I need to fulfill the hole in my heart. I had to decide whether I would go a new direction or work to rebuild all the things that unexpectedly fell apart. I concluded whatever it is I must face the fears, embrace the uncertainty, and have faith in a good outcome. I needed to empower myself to do something that my heart knows needs to be done. I’ve been feeling a big change is needed for humanity a pretty long time. I would get motivated to take part in initiating a shift only to become defeated thinking my hands were tied. I felt that I alone didn’t have the resources to both provide essentials for myself while also leading the way for turning the things that feel wrong in the world back to right. In my adult life, a common theme I’ve had, is a repulsion to doing things or working with people that didn’t make me feel good. I worked in sales and marketing for a large corporation where I helped them make billions selling something I didn’t really believe in. I then became a marketing consultant for smaller businesses in which I thought was a step in the right direction, only to find myself still working for people who preached a facade of goodness fueled by greed hidden with deception. Luckily for me the universe has a way of unpleasantly removing these things from my life, ironically happening at what seemed to be the worst possible times. The universe is silly like that, when these changes appear to be something bad, they are actually meant to wake me up and shed light on a necessary shift that needs to be had. As I get older, I have begun to understand what my abuelo used to say about the passage of time: the days are long, but the years are short. Its still hard to believe that it was six years ago today that we opened the front door of Pouring Ribbons for the very first time. Its been a helluva half-dozen years, thats for sure. Weve had some truly extraordinary staffers over the years, who we have seen grow as professionals and people. Weve celebrated their graduations, attended their weddings, welcomed their babies, helped them define and achieve their career goals, and bid them the best of luck as they moved onto locales as far flung as the top of the Rockies to the Caribbean ocean to Hong Kong. Were wrapping up our 18th menu, and I couldnt be more excited about our 19th, set to launch in early October. Weve learned a lot over the last six years, with some lessons being far more painful than others. I still shudder when I remember the soda carbonator exploding, the hot water heater dying, and the ice machine stalling out... all in the same damn week. But I also remember Mickey & Sammy guest-bartending our first holiday party and dancing on the bar- Im told we had a wonderful time that night. So should you find yourself in the East Village this evening, do stop in and raise a glass with us. This house was built for Solomon Sigisimond Shad, a LaVilla liquor company owner, in 1909. Son of a Cuban-born mother, Shad was also known as The Whiskey Man and found in violation of state alcohol laws in 1914. In 1946, the house was acquired by Pedro Mendez (pictured). Born in Santiago, Cuba and running a tailoring company, Cuban club and restaurant in Harlem, Mendez opened a tailoring business (pictured) nearby in 1927. After hearing MaVynee Betsch, the Beach Lady of American beach and granddaughter of Abraham Lincoln Lewis sing, daughter Padrica Mendez (pictured) decided she wanted to sing opera. Studying in Italy, she would go on to have a career as an opera singer, actress and fashion designer. Surviving the neighborhoods failed 1990s urban renewal, the Mendez house is the last stately residence standing on West Monroe Street and one of the few remaining buildings tied to the neighborhoods early 20th century Latin heritage and historical story. Working with Flogging Molly has been one of the biggest honors I have had over these 25 years of SideOneDummy. Funny to think back and realize it almost didn’t happen. In the early 90s, Matt Hensley and I became friends one night at Wrigleyville Tap in Chicago. This was years before Matt joined Flogging Molly. At the time, I was the singer of WAX, and WAX spent a lot of time in Chicago, where Matt was living. Matt and I became fast friends. Over the next few years, whenever I was in Chicago we would spend hours talking and listening to music. Matt’s knowledge ran deep on everything from Reggae, Oi, Punk to Ska, and more. His passion for music inspired me. And it was the beginning of the foundation that built our strong common bond. Fast forward to a few years later: SideOneDummy Records is up and running, and looking for bands to work with. At the time, we were a very new label with no track record. Matt sent me a cassette (yes, a cassette tape!) and invited me out to see the band play. Here’s the part of the story where it almost didn’t happen! Like I mentioned, Matt invited me out to see the band play. In true L.A. fashion, I went to three different shows and for some reason I missed them every time. Finally, on a last minute gig I finally got to see Flogging Molly for the first time. My jaw hit the floor. I was completely blown away by their sound and how they fused together traditional Irish music with punk rock energy. The musicianship was second to none and the charisma and vocals stylings of Dave King behind the microphone made me a fan immediately. Dave makes you feel like your the only person in the room when he’s singing or talking in-between songs. The next day, Flogging Molly played another last minute show in Las Vegas. Bill Armstrong and I hopped in the car and made our way to the show. Vegas, baby! That night after the show at the Las Vegas House of Blues, and over a few pints of Guinness, we talked music, the future, and how much Bill & I loved Flogging Molly. This photo was taken at the a rally to open salons when many stylists were still on the fence about reopening and we hadn’t received any communications from CBBC. A lot of people thought I was crazy for speaking out, saying that salons were safe enough to be open. I never wanted to open earlier than experts advised but rather not be in the same classification as churches, entertainment venues, and gyms. Cheers to all of the rude people who said they hope we all get cv for attending that rally...spoiler alert, we didn’t. ⠀ • ⠀ Since then we were authorized to open salons only to be shut down again. Salon owners have started looking at numbers of how many clients were serviced, how many stylists worked and how many cases of cv originated from their facility. As it turns out salons are safer than many thought. Even the CDC used salons as an example of the effectiveness of masks. ⠀ • ⠀ So here I am today thinking of a clever sign to make for tomorrow’s rally to re-open salons. This time we have the data to prove that the spread is unlikely in salons.
